They both are beautiful in their own way. I'd personally go with the AMG GT-S, much more visually stunning on public roads.

I was excited they made a review for the AMG GT vs the 911 but then I go to the damn video and I can't understand anything over the engine noise.

Trust me, you didn't miss anything. Just watch the video and it's obvious which car is the more fun to drive and which one is all business. That's all you need to make up your mind.

Why do they always test these cars on a race track? They should test it in the real world, there's more to cars than just lap times. Considering that most people don't live on a race track i would say lap times are irrelevant.
Just a quick survey, how many of you live at or near a race track?

G9 Music I live near one. But whether I could afford to visit it weekly, that's whole another question. Thing is, if these cars were tested on road, you wouldn't see them moving around that much. And come on, everyone wants to see these cars at their best. It's dangerous to drive like this on a public road, so you would see them just driving boringly.
juryjury Yeah but they tested these cars on a race track ONLY, they pretend like lap times are the only thing that matters.

The new GT should be compared to the Jag F type r. much closer in style price point and beauty. porsches are the fastest cars but not as lust worthy as the F type and gt
Ben Caprara The Jag F Type is dynamically very very different from the AMG GT.
I know but if people are in the market for a gt they are much more likely to consider the f type than the Porsche. Fast beautiful cars that are loud and in your face. The regular gent wants to be noticed in a flashy car not some Porsche that is by far the better dynamic driver's car but not nearly as likely to take it to a track.

Kaipeternicolas The GT3 splits the difference between sports car like the AMG GT and real specialist cars like the 458 Speciale. No F-Type can ever be compared to a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
One is a luxury car company that occasionally makes sports cars the other is a sports car company that occasionally makes luxury cars

AMG is gorgeous...and the interior is a work of art...sur, the 911 is a Porsche, which is to say a brilliantly engineered car...but that AMG really gets the blood pumping...wish they would put the E63s mill in there...that would me madness

The Porsche will always be the safe choice for those who want the pinnacle of driving precision, but the GT is the one that is more fun and, he said it right in the video, the one that will keep you smiling every time you see it in your garage. I guess auto reviewers like these guys have a different definition of what fun is than the rest of us normal blokes who drive normal cars.

Why was the AMG GT not compared to the standard 991 turbo, I think that would have been the better match up..
Great video and two things about it;
1. How a car drives is way more important than a lap time
2. Trust this guys opinion more than Steves, pretty unbiased which is what you actually want
I'm glad autocar have done this properly and pitched the AMG against the rear wheel drive GTS instead of other channels with the 4wd GTS
I love both,the problem is i only can only bought one of them.damn i cant focused on my job or my college and spending time looking at youtube comparison and coming back and forth to the showroom to sit on it,look at it and take picture of it. this is going to be the first brand new sports car that i ever bought so kinda big deal to me lol. since i was a kid i always wanted 911 911 911 911 but then came this beastly merc with beautiful ass...oh god!!! are you testing me for my determination to buy my childhood dream?!
In the same way some people have a face for radio, Matt Prior has a voice for writing. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate him and Autocar for giving us this free content, but 900+ horsepower between the two of them, can we at least get a smile? I realize it's just another day on the job for him, but he's driving two of the most exciting cars on the road for an audience who (for the most part) will never get to even sit in one of these, some enthusiasm would be nice.
Is it just more or did he say he wanted to see which one was faster but then they didn't show any timed laps?! Or are we 'just' supposed to assume the Merc won after they provided the stats. Also using a car nearer the same cost as the Merc probably would have given it a more balanced head to head.
I can actually feel the difference in character between the vehicles through the video. well done.
Really love new MB approach with C class and AMG GT. Beautiful, both exterior and interior.
the 991 GTS pdk does 0-100kph in 4.0 seconds. not 0-60mph in 4.4seconds... so the 991 is basically the same as the GT to 60mph. at least on paper.
It honestly just comes down to personal preference

The Porsche is the real drivers car. It is also the benchmark that other manufacturers are trying to catch up to. I drove everything and nothing comes close to a Porsche sports car for every day use and track fun, not to mention lower cost of maintenance and lower sticker price.

I see so many Porsches that it has lost the strong appeal of luxury, uniqueness and fun it use to have. Porsche is like a Maserati from a consumer stand point. Everyone has one. I see an average of 12 Porsches a day. And 1 AMG GT a month.
So the AMG lost against the 4WD Carrera GTS (AutoExpress), the 911 Turbo (EVO) and now against the 2WD Carrera GTS. Yes, the AMG is a good car, but the Porsche is better... END OF STORY.
***** Oh not only in Britain. I'm sure MotorTrend will conduct this test as well and the Porsche would win again. Besides Porsche doesn't care to win in Germany. Most of their sales are to the US. Those german magazines know how much people love Porsche, so now they want the US market grow to like the AMG to up sales for Mercedes as well. The British and US magazines are unbiased because they are foreign. Its like the Japanese testing the 911 vs GT-R. OBVIOUSLY they would say the GT-R is better. ***** It doesn't really matter, because there will always be a 911 that is better. That is just the truth. If the Turbo S doesn't win, the GT3 RS will. If the GTS doesn't win, the GT3 will.
ewt415 Exactly. GTS means very little these days considering that cars like the GT3 have more character and is as easy to live with each day. The ONLY thing the 911 GTS has going for it is the fact that you can get it in a manual.

OMG this reviewer sounds like David Brent from the office! Where do they find these people!? No wonder Clarkson is so loved.
Please balance the audio levels between external shots and commentary. And also give Matt a mic for the in-car camera so that his voice doesn't have to battle with the in-car engine noise.
The 991 Turbo is much closer in therm of power, torque and price. And it also has turbo. But not the same name ???
Why not 911 turbo which starts at 120k, same as the GT??
The 911 wins just because of the sound it makes. The AMG makes noise, it's not as lyrical as the 911.
Everybody keeps talking about the Porsche being all-wheel drive, I'm pretty sure that one was Rear-wheel drive.

The pricing is so strange, there's a 20,000 GBP difference in price over there, yet over here the prices for a GT S and 991 GTS are only separated by 15.000 USD, and once you option up both cars they're within about 5,000 of each other.

I love Porsches but with the depreciation on the amg makes it a no-brainer for me. Getting a low milage 2019 for less than $70,000

Suggestion: when the car is making lots of beautiful noise or screeching around the track, perhaps you should try not talking as we cannot hear what you have to say.... I am interested but half the time, I just heard a jumble of sounds. Great cars!
The race track is for comparison purposes. In any case, what pisses me off is that autocar goes to the trouble of running the cars at the track and they do not post times. Just their impressions. They say the 911 is the better drivers car. But what are the track times, that gives me the facts.

Richard Basford I'd personally get the Targa-4 GTS. Probably the most versatile and fun of them all. Turbo is stupidly fast though.

What a power and torque difference between the two. And since I am a "driver", I prefer a manual transmission, not available in the MB. I love my 991.1 GTS (wink).
Maybe I am 'old school' but I wouldn't buy a MB and expect all out performance, I have always thought of them as comfortable, very high class and yes in AMG trim very fast- In a straight line the MB is faster
Only reason I am in the AMG is.... all my neighbors have 911s.

Tbh after 200k km or more we will see which one is the better car. You have to rev up the porsche to get the power. In the Mercedes its much better solved. The old 63 AMGs were naturally aspirated aswell and still its impossible to damage these engines.

Haha. This is funny. So I recently watched Evo's track comparison of the AMG GT S and the 911 Turbo. I liked the review and thought it was very informative but I felt as though putting an all wheel drive 911 up against a rear wheel drive GT S was not a fair fight. Fast forward a few days and your video compares the GT S to a closer rival with rear wheel drive as well! (I admit the power difference is vast and maybe that was the reason for the evo's choice in the turbo) Even though it probably should not matter that much to me, especially considering one of the greatest attributes of a 911 is the driving experience, I was looking forward to see lap time comparisons in this video. There were none so I was a little sad, but I'll suck it up and admit that I was happy that yet another motor-journalist thinks that a 911 is still the better 'drivers car.' :-)

I am a mercedes fanboy and i love merc as much as nothing but what they could add on the gts(😍) is a AWD and some more horsepower for example make it 583 hp instead of 503 that would help it exelerate(sorry for the english in this word) faster even on higher speeds and the AWD would help it kick of the lane keep that place. Yes it would make the car heavier but it would have more fiction(is that right?) and power.So with it's great aerodynamics a AWD and 583bhp it will be a lot faster even if it is heavier

What kind of comparison was this?? Where is drag test? Braking test? Grip test? Track lap time? Basically you made a video told us your opinion and that was it. We can clearly tell you are a Porsche fan spotted from miles away. But we want numbers i don't care what you think which one is better we car heads want hard data facts
