    I ate some cupcakes my wife made. It was after coming back from a business trip. turns out the cupcakes had been sitting on the counter for more than a week becuase she ment to bring them with her on a trip to see family. I thought the colorful spots were some kind of decoration. They were a little gooey on the bottom but again I thought this was another of her experimental recipes. They tasted ok and I didnt get sick. so I got that goin for me which is nice.

      I had hoped the article contained a more direct link to the topic at hand, as it would have if it had explained *why* people are throwing out food. But it does not even say if the food is being thrown out because of food safety concerns. It only mentions how much is being wasted/thrown out.

    • @LatteDragon
      @LatteDragon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instead of blaming individuals, blame corporations. Grocery stores throw out enough food to feed every mouth in America and then some. They actively destroy food before putting it in the dumpster so that homeless people can't dumpster dive their food. People throwing away moldy food isn't the cause of surplus waste, its corporations. Redirect your energy to the pigs in power, not the everyday citizen who's waste is negligible in comparison.

    • @SpectatorAlius
      @SpectatorAlius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LatteDragon The economics of your claim sound suspicious: they can't remain profitable if they throw out food they could have sold. Their margins are too narrow and competition too fierce to let them control the price by restricting supply, too.

    • @Crucisphinx
      @Crucisphinx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpectatorAlius Technically it’s food they “couldn’t” sell because it was past their best or sell by date, but as those are both suggestions and err heavily on the side of caution, you could go dumpster diving and find perfectly good food that was “best by” yesterday. Losses from products “expiring” is written into grocery business plans, but most foods that aren’t improperly stored will still be safe and edible after the “expiry”, “sell by”, or “best by” date. I put all my bread in the fridge so I don’t pay attention to the sell by date at all, since the fridge will easily give the loaf an extra 3 weeks before it goes bad. I personally think products should just have the date they’re packed and their expected lifespan, but it’s easier to throw away a bunch of somethings that might not still be good next week than to check those items for freshness.

    I was told bread mold was lethal, and I believed it after a certain incident. I was eating a sandwich and tasted mold. I looked around for mold, but didn't see any. But I figured I should trust me senses and deem this sandwich inedible, so I threw it away. It wasn't long until I had a MAJOR stomach ache. It went away after about half an hour, but I thought if such a small amount of bread mold that I couldn't see it but still tasted it could do that to me then bread mold is no joke.
    Cheese mold I have always just cut off the block and continued using without any problems. I always assumed that was because cheese mold is okay (also because, you know, blue cheese). But now you're telling me that all mold is bad, and cutting mold off a cheese block is safe for a different reason?

      @ZC But as the narrator in this video warned, "the rest" could be already infested with mold hyphae. They are hard to see without a magnifying glass.
      But the hyphae do not easily spread across the gap between slices in pre-sliced bread, so if it is pre-sliced, you can get away with throwing away only a few slices. I would still toast the rest.

    You can slow down mold growth on bread by putting it in the refrigerator. Also, higher-density breads like potato bread (still a damn good bread) tends to grow less mold, too... at least in my experience. Potato bread is also great for making really fat sandwiches which tends to break and tear up other breads while you're eating it.

      TheRealD4VID - It doesn't matter what you hear more often. If you said "I have one apples" I would correct you and say the right word is "apple" because that is the singular. It doesn't matter if you hear "apples" more than you hear "apple". That doesn't make it right to use the plural instead of the singular. English can be quite a contextual language and has flaws, but ignoring rules shows your own flaws, not the English language flaws.

    There are some apparent inconcistencies in the presenetation. Example: the narrator mentions mycotoxins as a reason to throw it out, but then the only mycotoxins mentioned he describes as infesting only corn, barley and peanuts. But among the foods he says one should throw out because they are 'soft' are breads (presumably including wheat bread containing neither corn or barley), carrots and strawberries.
    BTW: I have seen moldy strawberries, but never moldy carrots. That must be rare. So are their any mycotoxins that grow on these foods? Why are so few sources of mycotoxins mentioned?

    • @Specoups

      It happened to me that I forgot carrots in the back of my fridge, and then strumbled upon them one month later as saw mold on them. The mold was white and dark green.

      Expert Excavating It probably depends on the type of mold, and what is growing with it. I have tasted "dirt" and "mustiness" and sometimes "aromatic/herbal but not in a good way" when accidentally consuming mold. Moldy fruit is usually less acidic than the original, and often ethanolic because yeast was there too. "Fishy" is a common result of decay (of nucleotides if I remember right). That could be due to the mold digesting the food, or due to bacteria, etc. Breads (grain) are not as ATP & nucleic acid sense as fish, but it could happen. (Lactic acid [in pickling and some sourdough] is produced by lactobacillus and vinegar by acetobacter. These are spoilage, but bacteria, not molds.)
