Thank you Nerd of The Rings for allowing Tom Shippey to speak on his own. Allowing experts to explain their expertise becomes such a treat to us viewers. ❤
Wow...how far your channel has come in only 3 years....you have interviewed some very iconic people and actors in the tolkien world...truely a 'nerds dream' Congratulations my man...and well done
I would love to have a wonderful conversation with him over tea and seedcake about Beowulf as well as Icelandic or Norse sagas. I love the way he explains the language and meanings of Beowulf. He is absolutely wonderful .
Fantastic! I could listen to him talk all day! That must have been an easy interview for you. Don't even really have to ask questions, just sit back, relax and he'll guide the conversation. Awesome 👍. I'm looking forward to getting the book. I read Beowulf in highschool a million years ago. 🖖😁🤘🇨🇦
Wonderful interview! I've so missed Tom! I hope he comes back to Leiden, so I can have the opportunity to buy the beer and share the cigarillos again. 😉
Hey, Jonathan! I was excited to catch a stream in time to send a Super Chat! I watch you guys all the time. The quality of discussion, level-headedness, and atmosphere is a breath of fresh air online!
All that bit about Wealtheow, has been treated in an academic paper before. What he didn't mention, and maybe it's just me reading more into what she says, but she knows what a threat Hrothulf is going to be to the succession of Hrethric, and tries to recruit Beowulf's support, without directly asking for direct aid. Beowulf, at least to me, seems to side step the delicate situation a bit, and tells her that her sons would be welcome among the Geatas if they should find themselves in the neighborhood. Also, while the poet doesn't go into minutia about it, he's certainly dropped enough hints that we know Heorot will be destroyed by fire due the Hrothulf seizing the throne after Hrothgar dies. This is also related (albeit with a bit of a different family tree) in Hrolf saga Kracka (who is Hrothulf in Beowulf). Anyway, yes, there's certainly a lot of political underplay, and I think that Wealtheow hasn't had much attention from scholars (except for one that I'm aware of). The song sung by Aragorn after Theoden dies is very influenced by the Wanderer, another Anglo Saxon poem.
Isn't Gandalf also the name for an elf that Tolkien had to work with? You should interview Crispin Freeman. He's a voice actor and mythology maniac, and his wealth of Tolkien knowledge is mind-blowing! I loved this interview! Thank You!
Because amazon does not care about quality but political and ideological messages which do not belong to Tolkien universe. If you want to fail you do not listen to geniuses like Tom.. one billion dumpster fire.
Tolkien is contained within the name Thorkelin who was the first translator of Beowulf, I told Tom shippey this once he wasn't interested. Any thoughts on this Nominative determinism. ? Cheers from Mercia
27:08 I think Dr. Shippey forgets that Sauron enslaved the peoples of Núrn, and it is one of the celebrated acts of Elessar that he liberates them and grants them the land around Lake Núrnen after the War of the Rings. It could also be argued that the nine rings of power for mortal men enslaved their wearers as well. In the broader legendarium, Morgoth definitely enslaved people.
I think he’s simply referring to the practices of the protagonists and their respective cultures. In an authentic “pagan” setting, it wouldn’t just be the villains who practice slavery. Also, Morgoth and his servants definitely partook in blood sacrifice as well. Sauron even had the Numenoreans sacrificing elf-sympathisers in the Temple of Melkor.
@@anni.68 I like to think he was just done with his task, we know from the two showrunners they talked long with him about Numenor, and other things, and i think they were done.
@@lulululu8045 no they didn't, actually. And I have it on good authority, (someone who has spoken with Shippey personally about this) that it was indeed due to breaking his NDA in the interview he did with the German newspaper. Thanks for playing.
I think people woud rather hear why from Dr Shippe'ys mouth direct not from 'Your friend' on 'good authority'. Its a question everyone wants to hear him answer as we know the identity politics in the background of the Rings of Power series. Not asking him about this is a huge missed opportunity.
He did a great talk on this called 'Tolkien Book to Jackson Script: The Medium and the Message' which can be found on Swarthmore College's site. Though this was before the Hobbit movies.
Such a darling man! I know him and his talks through The Tolkien Professor, and this a fine addition to that set. Also, is it any wonder that he ran afoul of the creators of Rings of Power and was let go from the production?
It’s a bit funny, because here in Sweden (and maybe the rest of Scandinavia, I don’t know) the Viking Age is actually NOT considered part of the Middle Ages. So here the Middle Ages started when we became Christian, which ended the Viking Age. Do when I hear “Viking Age” I don’t think “Middle Ages” at all.
I think there’s no common consensus among English speaking countries. Casual historians seem to distinguish “the Dark Ages” and the Early Middle Ages, probably because of the Norman Invasion in 1066. But then popular culture seems to use “medieval” and “dark ages” interchangeably.
His comment about academics having no sense of humor: do you suppose it is because they feel, surrounded by students and colleagues, that they must always be right ... and always be proving it?
I think academia attracts a lot of undiagnosed neurodivergent peoples. The fear of being misunderstood or ridiculed can present as a generally defensive demeanour
There is a much better "guide to the battlefield of life" than the Bhagavad Gita. You might have heard of it. It's called the Holy Bible. While the Bible does speak of the law of Reaping and Sowing, that law is superseded by the principle of Grace, the gift of forgiveness and unearned favor. In contrast, the Bhagavad Gita is big on Karma which perverts the principle of reaping and sowing with the addition of the false teaching of reincarnation and the caste system that has for centuries relegated members of the Dalit outcastes to the bigotry of perpetual degradation.
Check out Dr. Shippey's brand new Beowulf book! amzn.to/3FndkZx
Please make a theory about what would have happened if the Balrog of Moria Mines had survived??

Thanks for the kind words!
what an Amazing man... Tolkien would have been very proud to have such an academic man studying his works.
Finally! I was hoping this would come about eventually. Love this man's humor and knowledgability. One of my favorite professors for sure.
He's a really witty guy! It was so much fun to chat with him!
@@NerdoftheRings that's awesome to hear!
a living legend, what a man hats off
Tom Shippey!!!
So cool to see him on your channel.
He reminds me of my Latin professor. Love it.

Just recently purchased his two iconic books on Tolkien. I have only recently finished Unfinished Tales and am Diving deeper into the Tolkien Iceberg

Thanks Matt and Tom, a fantastic listen.
Thanks for creating this, Matt. It was a great conversation!
Wow, wow! What a guest!
What incredible remarks from Shippey!
That conversation was superb.
This book is another work of love to Tolkien. I have the Tolkien translation of Beowulf. I am looking forward to this book
Thanks!
The queen's speech reminds me of the irony in Mark Anthony's speech about Brutus in Julius Caesar...
Wonderful interview! I've so missed Tom! I hope he comes back to Leiden, so I can have the opportunity to buy the beer and share the cigarillos again. 😉
shippey is always fascinating. wish there were more of his lectures and interviews available
Loved this, thank you Matt and Tom! Legends
An absolute legend.
What an excellent interview! An hour very well spent.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I had a really hearty laugh watching this! Thank you for the interview! 😄🤗💖
Now I'm really interested in reading that book about Beowulf..
Great interview; thanks, Matt!
Such a delight! So much knowledge balanced with a good sense of humor! Loved the dynamic between you and just letting him speak. 😊
Haha! My favorite I once said was Two Towers, just like Tom Shippey!
Thanks Matt. This was my Chrismas present. I ordered the book right away and I laughed tears when he said" we should have stayed in the gutter"
Amazing interview, I'm fascinated!!!
This was a superb interview - thank you both!
Thanks!
Nice! I'm just reading through "Beowulf and the North Before the Vikings" right now.
No way! I wrote my senior thesis in high school on the 2 books on the right in the thumbnail.
Im late and can't stay long, but I'm definitely coming back to watch the whole thing!
tom shippey is fabulous! what a gem.
Lovely interview, love listening to this, he definitely knows his stuff and seems like a cool and fun person as well!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
What an informative, down-to-earth, nice guy...just added three of his books to my list. 👍
Oooo, new Beowulf book? Had no idea, thanks for that.
You should do a Tolkien Theory on what if Glorfindel took the ring, or if he went with the fellowship.
Good seeing you comment on TJCS today. This is Jonathan btw.

What an extraodinary and enjoyable interview.
You should have Dr. Peter Kreeft on! You could talk about the philosophy of Tolkien! :D
I full on thought this was creed from the office from a fast glance 😂😂😂
Amazing interview!
Great interview. Are we not allowed to ask what happened on The Rings of Power?
For me it is 45 years of Tolkien. I have Covid too.
Really enjoyed this and the book!
Thanks!
This brings back fond memories of him speaking at Swarthmore College.
Can't wait!

I don’t think Mere Christianity is ignored today. Russell Brand just tweeted about it, and it’s been mentioned in multiple leading podcasts.
Can you ask him why he left Rings of Power?
he wasnt allowed to
Question: does he agree with Christopher Tolkien's view of the movies.
Does he have any criticism/thoughts on the hobbit movies

It’s very believable. They had no interest in doing right by Tolkien.
