Is F.E.A.R. Still Worth Playing? (Full Review)

  • In this episode of Games From Earth (we have a title now), we take a deep dive into one of the most well-known shooters of the mid-2000s era of gaming, F.E.A.R. Should you play it, this many years later? Watch and find out!
On a more technical side, this video took literally 10+ render attempts to do. There were two corrupted frames in the final cut, so what I ended up doing was rendering the video four successful times in total. One for each segment between the corrupted frames, and once more with all those rendered segments spliced together in a new project. Sony Vegas is the best. Just one of the many reasons this video took three or more months to make.

Alma's conscience\soul can affect the real world, she wants to get into Armachan to get access to her physical body, apparently she can fix her rotting body that has been stuck in a machine for 20+ years. Technically she doesn't need her body, it is more of an attachment thing from what I gather.
Paxton Fettel is helping her because she merged their consciousness, so he has her memories, so to him it feels like what they done to her was done to him.
Fettel and Pointman were both tortured in a lab during their childhood, Pointman just got lobotomized out of those memories and send to fill a government role, even though realistically the government would likely kill him rather than deal with the variables of a possible superpowered dude walking out there.
Fettel was considered a success specimen so he was taken into more lab exams and made into a weapon of war.
He is also basically killing everyone responsible for his life being miserable. He doesn't kill pointman because pointman is his brother.
Both Pointman and Fettel are incest babies because Harlam Wade didn't want to risk mixing Alma's DNA with anybody else's so he "had his way" with his 12 year old kid.
I much prefer the phone messages than cutscenes because I hate when control is taken away from the player, it is the worst part of Doom 3 for me.
At least I can listen to the messages with my own pace and try to put things together myself, rather than being force fed information through cutscenes.
FEAR also does cutscenes but I don't like them much, it would be more interesting if you existed in the cutscene like it was a 3d memory you can walk into after absorbing it.

As a long time FEAR fan this is now my favorite FEAR review. I found you first through your Enclave review because it was an obscure game I played as a kid.

answering the question at 24 minutes in. Alma in the first game is mainly in spirit form roaming around following the player. She doesn't have her physical form until the end of the game and even then her physical corpse form and her spirit form are still disconnected up until the end of Extraction Point when they finally merge. Or at least thats my interpretation of it. First game she's mainly just a powerful ghost helping Paxton and observing the player.

    Great video, great great video!
ITs always funny to me how people say the F.E.A.R. games were never scary to them. Because they were intense as heck for me. I think it took me like 3 months to play the first Fear because everytime I got to a scary part, I needed a break. I still remember a particularly bad jumpscare that got me good, when I was climbing a ladder, and one where she was in a doorway. Oof.
so yea, nowadays im still a big fan of horror games, but I much prefer to watch other people play them. lol

In 2006 playing alone, in the dark, and with headphones on you would have a few jump scares on your first playthrough.

Also happen to be playing this right now. I agree with what you diagnose about action vs. horror. But you have a jumpscare in the video that totally got me. If that was intentional, I don't have to say where.... :-)

    • @loganfromearth
      @loganfromearth  ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely didn't intend any jumpscares, sorry about that. Hope you enjoy the game! I sure did. Well, at least 85% of it.

@@loganfromearth No need to apologize! I can take a jumpscare. Yes, I enjoyed it again! The gameplay has virtually not aged. But most of all thanks for the video!!!

Is one of the greatest psychological horror shooters ever made with one of the best enemy AIs to date still worth playing?
Yes. Yes it is. FEAR, especially the first one (2 is fun, 3 is... okay coop) is a fantastic experience.

Personally one of my favorite games. The vibes are immaculate. The perfect blend of John Woo films, Akira, Ghost in the shell, and the X-files. Sucks the sequels didn't keep it going

05:25 No you get this wrong here, sry. The ai is not only good for it's time and most games today have these things as a standard.
Yes the game's ai was amazing for it it's time HOWEVER...
Comparing this ai to modern day games it is still better at surprising the player and make you feel like you are fighting actual players.
Modern shooters ai are nowhere near as good as FEARs ai and today's shooter devs should play FEAR.
I love shooters but I have not found a single shooter able to top FEARs ai.
(FEAR 2-3 is very mediocre for those who don't know)

I think the soldiers get the orders trough telepathic communication.
But they still have a self consciousness.
So it's not like they are the same brain eating zombie character like their "commander"

The original game is set in the city of Fairport in 2025 and follows the fictional F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) unit, an elite group in the United States Army tasked with investigating supernatural phenomena, as they probe a private military company's secret research program, which has resulted in the unintended release of a dangerous and powerful psychic. The player takes on the role of the unit's newest recruit, Point Man, as he faces down not only the psychic, but so too a lethal and unpredictable paranormal menace in the form of a young girl, Alma Wade. Project Origin is set immediately after the conclusion of the first game, and follows Sgt. Micheal Becket of Delta Force, who awakens in a strange hospital only to find that Alma, now free from her confinements, has taken a keen interest in him. F.E.A.R. 3 takes place nine months after the conclusion of Project Origin. Alma's pregnancy is nearing its end, and when a resurrected Paxton Fettel (the psychic from the first game) rescues Point Man from captivity, the two head back to Fairport, with Point Man determined to prevent Alma from giving birth. Fettel, however, has an entirely different motive.

The scariest thing to me in FEAR were the goddamn mechs. I'm genuinely impressed by how they've unintentionally made a man in a gigantic fridge more terrifying than a little girl that can melt people with her mind......probably because the fridge wearing lunatics can actually kill me if I'm not careful.
