    Just wanted to mention that dodgeball is a snowballing teamsport, if somebody gets tagged out,.it gets harder and harder to play.
    There is an italian ball sport where they can fight each other, and the game gets harder for you if teammates get knocked out.
    Also, boxing is a snowball sport. The more hits you take, the harder it becomes to focus.

    • @SwagnarLoL
      @SwagnarLoL ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most contact sports are snowball teamsports IMO. American football for example many teams will run the ball many times in a row because it tires the other team out. You may not see it at first, but by the end of the game you can run for much longer plays each time because the defense is too tired.

      @@mohamedelnaggar2688 You can kind of see it being snowbally though. Because the game has a set timer on, if you are 0-1 down you have to attack and go forward trying to score, which leaves your defense more exposed, and it can lead to snowballing more goals for the opponent's team. And the further down you are, the worst it gets. If you are 0-3, now you are desperate to score asap, which can lead you getting 0-7'd or something

    I come from a baseball background, so I tend to see lots of things across baseball vs. League. I don't think it's a perfect comparison, but I do think there are some similarities:
    1) It's a team sport that requires a significant amount of individual skill. The laning phase is a 1v1 in the same sense that the hitter is 1v1 against the pitcher. That being said, you have to understand your role. You shouldn't be trying to hit a home run in every at-bat regardless of context - just like in League, you have games where you contribute to a win without getting lots of kills.
    2) In basketball or football, you can always "out-hustle," the other team. In baseball, you can't escape slumps or losing-streaks through sheer effort. This makes the game mentally challenging, because you have to sit with failure more. In League, you can't rank up by playing dozens of games with no break or adjust to your approach.
    3) Both baseball and League are incredibly strategic. In lots of FPS video games, people with naturally great aim can overcome bad positioning. I would say League is less mechanically complex than other top-tier esports, but is strategically very difficult. Similarly, baseball is technically challenging - but having a mentally sound approach is what makes players good vs. great. There's a very famous Yogi Berra quote: "90% of baseball is mental. The other half is physical."
    edit: 4) Baseball doesn't necessarily have a snowballing effect, although it is unlike other sports in that you could technically score infinitely. There is no clock, and you play an inning until your team gets out 3 times. If a team starts getting hits and scoring runs, it's common knowledge that pitchers get rattled and start giving up even more runs. You can't take a timeout. In this sense, both League and baseball require the ability to mentally reset and find a way to come back from a large deficit.

    20:00 this may be true for low elo, but I actually disagree for higher elos.
    My primary identity is as an academic, I've done well in my field and that's what I've dedicated my life to. I'm 25 and doing my PhD currently so still "in training" but it's still my primary conception of self. I prioritize it over all else and even DM'd Curtis on Twitter one time talking to him about how I wanted to improve at league but couldn't compromise my academic schedule to do so (he suggested I just take a break from my league improvement btw).
    However, I've also played a lot of league and get to masters every season, and still have a lot of self-worth tied to this. It's just something I've put a lot of time and effort into, so it's inevitable that my self-worth will get attached to it. I would still feel like a "failure" if I couldn't reach masters in a season (which will likely end up happening at some point when I'm finishing my thesis).
    This is (in my humble opinion) just the curse of mortality. You don't have time to become great at everything, in fact it's almost impossible to be great at more than one thing at all! I'm friends with challenger players and irl successful people alike and all of them are insecure about other aspects of life. And it always comes down to the fact that they just don't have the time to put into the other pieces of their identity. I don't have any advice for this but it's just something to think about when you consider what it means to want to be "great" at something and understanding that it will come at the cost of other aspects of your self-worth.

    I love the immediate discussion about trying to compare to in person sports. The best comparison I can give is duos billiards - not only is it extremely snowball-y, you also have to rely on a teammate who you have zero control over that may not see the game the way you do. It doesn’t incorporate fog of war, but it has the nonstop play and high reliance on understanding angles and opportunity

    That guy from Twitter...he's mad that other people are achieving the same goal as him. Every single person that makes it to high ELO devalues his accomplishment. You have to understand, even if you're the very first challenger. Eventually you're 1 out of 300, then 1 out of 500, then 1 out of 1000. Every person who makes it to Challenger devaleus the accomplishment. This might not bother most people, especially if you don't think about it that way, but if the guy is hyper competitive, it probably really strikes a chord with him.

    On sports without resets: league is unique to most sports in that the "goal" is not to score points, its to kill the nexus. You could theoretically "score" over and over through a match, with kills, drakes, turrets etc counting as points, and lose despite a massive "score" disparity because of a single retaliatory "score" (I.e. baron) which leads to a nexus kill and win for the opposition.
    One sport that has a remarkable similarity to league is the Calcio Storico in Italy, a sort of team football/fighting hybrid, but it still has resets, i dont think there are any traditional team sports without resets, maybe relay races, i guess?

    I believe the reason that a lot of people start out notetaking by writing down every mistake is so that they can see trends. Oftentimes the trends can be much easier spotted from an outside perspective (like a coach's), but it can be much harder when you're observing yourself, especially when you're just starting out. I think humans are just generally bad at noticing trends of their own actions. That's why it's a skill that needs to be developed by reviewing. Overall I agree with what you said about notetaking, but I believe that it's just a level of reviewing difference. Coaches are understandably very high level in that skill.

    League is more similar to warfare than sports, and the constant changing of the Meta (balancing of champions and introduction of new champions) is more like the inventions and innovations of new weaponry and tactics moreso than rule changes in games like NBA basketball. Also the lack of information and importance of information gathering (including making assumptions about the enemy's strategies based on limited information) is very similar to warfare.

    I'd be interested to know when this toxicity started, because I've been gaming since I was a little girl, and I was born in 1986.
    I truly do not remember gamers being THIS toxic when I was a teenager/young adult.
    Granted, there were some jerks in various MMOs, here and there. But they were few and far between.
    Growing up for me as a gamer was the complete opposite to what it is now.
    When I was in my late 20s playing League, I developed a disdain for boys between the ages of 13~25, because of League toxicity.
    Not to say that women can't be bitchy. But this toxicity (in the gaming community) overwhelmingly comes from that age group in young males.
    I had to do a little personal growth within myself to not let that kind of mentality affect me. And now, I can just brush it off.
    But it was so hard at first, because I was not used to people just being a dick for literally no reason, in this world that I love.

    In Basketball, we've been seeing the meta change for the past 10-20 years very clearly, actually. A multitude of players have contributed to it, but primarily Steph Curry. His team shot more three point shots than every other team by a good margin and created a dynasty.
    Now every other team has been focusing less on getting big bodies who can bully their way in and play good defense, and one of the most important commodities in the league is players who can play on the outside and knock down 3 pointers.
    Tldr: 3 pts > 2 pts, and the NBA has undergone a revolution to completely change the meta based off this realization.

That i am just a bad onetrick that plays around snowballing early game on camille and carry through micro. I dont know macro and i loose more gsmes on my emerald account i have to play with my girlfriend who is low diamond. I have a vague perception of macro and some general thumb rules to follow. Loved the discussion. I do though think that there is a factual error impied in the comparison between elos then and now. If a client/student was d2 in the past, say, s5 or 6, if you adhere to what the tweet with percentages is saying, they were crème de la crème then in terms of percentage of player base, which should mean that, if they were to maintain the percentile status, they would now be a higher elo, right? I think that there are some ideas implied in the statistics there that you didn't quite discuss and then you jumped to people coming back to the game and struggling to climb. This would mean, purely in percentile terms, that anyone who was, say, GM before, would be challenger today if the percentile were to be the same and the ranks remain inflated as they are, according to the statistics. Maybe you addressed this and I missed it, but I had the feeling that two disconnected ideas were implied to be connected when they are not: "elo inflation", i.e. the expansion of the percentile of a particular bracket to include more people over the years, and returning players who had a particular rank (diamond, say, for instance) and are struggling to climb (which in % terms, means they got worse), which may or may not have anything to do with elo inflation. From the perspective of a returning player, their previous elo accomplishments, however amazing in % terms, means that they are not even close to the same bracket even if they achieve the same rank nowadays.

      I think one thing you're undervaluing is the fact that plenty of players do not improve at the game at the same rate as the general population. That's why people often can't maintain the same %. But I don't think any of that should matter anyways- rank ultimately doesn't matter and having it as your primary focus/source of self-worth can very easily lead to toxic habits and mentalities. I think that's the point they were trying to make. Imo, focusing purely on getting better every game (without judgement of your rank or mistakes) is hands down the best way to enjoy the game, since it has the least risk of leading to toxicity in your mental.

      While the individual dragons aren't that important, soul is still very valuable. If the 4th dragon is being taken at 24 minutes then the losing team is forced to give soul or fight before they hit their spikes. Conversely if first dragon isn't taken until 15 minutes then the losing team can afford to let the enemy have dragons while they farm their spikes. Then when they take the later soul fight they are actually on their item spikes (or for kayle/kassadin/etc: their level spikes).

      @@FunnyVideos-bs5zr So in the previous episodes clip corner the take about the importance of mid shove. The idea is you push in the wave and "the enemy has to respond to the minions". The reason for this isn't talked about very much because its somewhat obvious: if they don't respond you kill their base.
      The skillcapped video is showing a bunch of examples where the enemy didn't respond to the wave. In one bel'veth is literally pushing top with herald for over 30 seconds and 0 people recall to address it. Yes, in that case you can get more value by not moving into dragon.
      However, the majority of the time someone will come to stop the push. In this case you aren't going to get that flashy +600 gold from killing a tier 2. Instead (assuming you're not a hardcore split pushing champ like trynd) you're barely going to get any chip damage as they collect the full wave.
      Its generally better to push the wave, the enemy goes to respond, and while they do this you move to take the man advantaged fight. This is also why TP is so useful on split pushers. They don't have to play the mindgame of will-they-react, they just keep pushing until they see the enemy react and then tp in for the man-advantaged fight.
      I don't think the skillcapped video is wrong its just incomplete. They leave out how they will adapt when they aren't presented with an open enemy base. And its that adaptability and the consistency to not make mistakes in varied scenarios that actually lets the author get his rank. Its not that he actively never takes dragon [a gimmick]. Its that he assesses all the possible plays on the map and takes the best one [skill].

    • @Obzerver
      @Obzerver ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FunnyVideos-bs5zr Another important note, the conversation in this episode is taking about what to do from a losing (or at least neutral) position. In contrast the skillcapped video is showing examples of smurfing, a 7/2 zed, and a 13/3 akali. If you're that ahead then yes, you don't need to 'wait' for soul.
      If the game remains even though "souls isn't a win condition" is just a factually wrong statement. Every soul has an 88-91% win rate for the team that gets it. Its objectively powerful. Its possible to play for other win cons. But saying its not a win con is factually wrong.
      Don't get that confused for individual dragons though. They are weak. Vast majority of the power is in the soul. Its okay (and frequently encouraged) to trade individual dragons for gold on your carries.

    Pretty Unique Take on LP. Lets just call it Money. If being Bronze III with 50 LP is equal to 550 Dollars (All the LP leading up to Bronze III) you can lose $30 (30-35 LP) or gain ($15) 15-20 LP per win on your climb up. That's a 6% loss and a 2% Gain roughly. As you climb to Gold Platinum and such i can see how losses and wins in the grand scheme seems small but for the bronzes and irons it's a hell of a lot more weighty.
    Either way I would make my mindset to go in and not lose 30 dollars. Imagine if at work you made nothing for pay until you clocked in, and after that 30 mins to an hour spent; if you failed you'd owe them up to 30 bucks out of your own pocket.
    I bet you'd try as hard as you can to keep your money. Better yet, earn 15. Do everything you can not to lose $30 or 6% of your life savings lol.

      Karate/Muay thai practicioner here too!
      U may know that in Japan oldschool dojos, there were no belt colours. Everyone just went as a "novice" with a white belt as the colour white meaning lack/abscence of knowledge/techniques/etc (unranked) until after years and years of training, it got darker or literally "black belt" (challenger)
      You could see which practitioner was older or more experienced because of the darkened white belt (more years of training thus "dirtier" belt) as the new karatekas had cleaner/whiter belts.
      As karate and martial arts in general got more popularised and even started being teach in schools and educational systems for physical education (previously being taught for self defense/militar issues) the coloured belts system (firstly imposed in JUDO) started gaining popularity and was established in most dojos. (Now establishing leagues/ranks inbetween unranked>chall)
      after martial arts were westernized, this colour system/levels were a good idea to also get a buck in the pocket by incorporating graduations once a year (promos? lol), some dojos even twice a year so nowadays the coloured belt system is practically everywhere.
      (my take on this, is that formerly, people just cared about LEARNING/getting better/training (thus belt going darker); and that was when people progressed more naturaly. as colours belts were introduced, people started being more concerned of getting the next belt/rank (silver/gold/platinum/diamond/etc) than to just consistently practice and get better thus EGO>Skill/knowledge)
      A fellow Karate practicioner, who's also a Kendoka (80 y/o) told me he used a white belt on his first 30 years of training, after which his Sensei directly promoted him to black belt. He stated that he'r rather be a "surprisingly good" white belt, than a mediocre "black belt". At least they wouldnt expect his knowledge when he had the white belt, meaning he has an edge by the adversary thinking he is a novice.
      Anyways, got to much into the topic lol.
      I think white belt is like Unranked, as Master is black belt (Gm=5th dan/Chall=10th dan)
      U "dont need" the Chall badge to actually BE chall (its about the knowledge/mechanics/ability to play, NOT the badge itself) same way U dont need a Black Belt to actually be a Black Belt (u just need to have the knowledge be able to apply techniques, have certaing skill degree, etc.... its not aboult "THE BELT" itself!!!)
      As the refrain says: "It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war." so; Id rather be a Challenger posing as unranked, than an unranked posing as Chall :)

    There is something you don't mention about elo inflation : the whole league community is improving at the game.
    Master in season 13 might be significantly lower in terms of % of the playerbase compared to season 6, but I do not agree with the underarching belief that a S6 master player is better than a S13 master player.
    League is becoming more competitive. Being top 0.5% in s13 in comparison to top 1% in s6 is harder because you have way more players who want to get to the top.
    -> For that reason elo inflation might exist if you think about % of the playerbase but I don't believe it's happening in terms of skill level. In my opinion, it's not a relevant concept unless you want to protect your ego when you cannot reach the rank you reached in the past.

  • @yuumijungle548
    @yuumijungle548 ปีที่แล้ว

    well okay to be fair, there are ways to cheat the system in league, that other sports simply dont have, for example duo abuse, which leads to mmr abuse tricks, there is one trending atm where diamond 4 players can inflate their mmr into challenger games and so on, soloqueue at its core is maybe 50% competetive at best, the rest is unsportsmanlike garbage, like abusing bugs, duo and so on. imagine in chess there was a ranked ladder where you could play against 2 people at once 1v2, ofc the game is gonna be alot harder if your opponent has 2 queens, 2 kings and all the other pieces as well, duh. if you actually queue up solo in soloqueue and your opponents queue up duo, your at a huge disadvantage, that is a straight fact.

    • @bjornblomgren2977
      @bjornblomgren2977 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do your best to cheat, but if you want to practice developing an improvement mindset, league ranked solo-q is an amazing tool with such a large skillcap that allows you to practice.
      Just because you can get it for free temporarily doesn't mean the system is broken.

    • @Obzerver
      @Obzerver ปีที่แล้ว

      Duo boosting is 100% a possibility in chess, at least online.
      My roommate used to play so I started to get into it and we would sometimes sit behind each other and watch.
      If you see a really good move or tactic then you can say it.
      Of course you don't get double the pieces but it can help with the speed of your decision making or avoiding obvious blunders. Its worth mentioning the double pieces analogy is wrong anyway, you don't get an extra champion for a 6v5 if you duo.
      This is caveated with sometimes the clock would run out as the person playing is trying to understand wtf the backseater is saying. Its a double edged sword, it can hurt as much as it helps in some cases.
      To put a point on it, both he and I reached our peak ranks playing alone when the other person wasn't there.
      Maybe these things work short term but if that D4 player isn't skilled enough to play vs challengers then they're going to lose the game. And if you're losing then you're not climbing.
      You can't even duo if you have masters+ mmr so I question the validity of your claim about the abuse.
