Bought a guitar off ebay from a seller with 50 good reviews and well he hand delivered the guitar the same day, drove 2 hours through snow to get it to me, so i have only ever had one experience on ebay and well it was great.
That's cool he did that for you! And I am glad he did because the more hands you can take off of a valuable guitar during transit the better right? I know when I finally get my money saved for my custom I will not let it be shipped I'm driving to pick it up for sure, awesome your guitar and experience was good keep ripping brotha!🎸
I probably bought 25 Gibsons off Ebay between 2008 and 2016 and never had a bad experience. Of course I only bought from sellers in this country who had been selling onsite for years and had 100% seller ratings. That way I never had to go thru any bs.
You strike me as a truly genuine honest person I'm so glad to watch your videos and it's a breath of fresh air to see someone so happy and so enlightened to just share your videos with this population of true guitarist thank you
Seeing it makes me even more confident that the three piece maple necks with a volute that Norlin did in the late 70s really were effective in reducing headstock breaks and really the right thing to do.
It's because some of us do not make a living selling items , some people just genuinely have 1 guitar they are willing to let go and they need the cash, no money for extra packaging
I absolutely love when you do the unboxing videos I get all excited it feels like my birthday I'm so happy to watch these videos Merry Christmas and happy New Year LOL
I recently imported two guitars made in France from France and Switzerland. Both were shipped using UPS; UPS slaps an additional charge for taking care of custom duties. Guitars I purchased from Japan were shipped via EMS and delivered by USPS. USPS is a cheaper way as they just bring the the invoice to pay.
@@stevetubvang3034 thats exactly what guitar center did and they gave me a guitar with no back play or truss rod cover and my shit was around the 600 dollar price range
Yes and no to the eBay vs reverb situation. I was buying and selling guitars on eBay about a year after they appeared on the internet. Yes, a lot of sellers there don't know much about guitars and shipping. However I have also noticed that most sellers on reverb inflate the price of used instruments. I like that gold top with the p90s.
I've bought and sold a number of guitars on eBay over the past 15 years, and the only problem I've ever had was a DeArmond that arrived with a cracked headstock about 11 years ago. I bought it for about $65 & just parted it out and made a small profit. If you check out the sellers before you buy from them, ask questions, look at the pictures and know what you're buying you'll be fine buying on eBay. If you don't you're likely to get screwed over no matter where you buy.
I bought an AX40 Sterling by Music Man off of eBay when I was in high school. The guitar came wrapped in a bunch of brown paper and puffy plastic without a box or case. The headstock was obviously cracked when I unwrapped it.
Would love to see an episode of 60s Gibson Models that don't cost a fortune! Some obscure ES models etc that haven't appreciated to the same extent as Les Pauls et al. Not necessarily reviews, just a shopping style episode showing off the models, availability and pricing.
I second that. I prefer Fender electrics, but I’m really fascinated by ES-125s, ES-175s, and the different variations of them from the 50s and 60s. My favorite guitar shop currently has a 1957 ES-140T that I’m really interested in. It looks like an ES-175 with the Florentine cutaway, it has one P-90, the T in model name means it’s a thinline, and it is a short scale.
I love those modern Flying V's and really wish they were popular (I'd love it if Gibson or Epiphone made them as just part of their normal line of instruments).
I'd love to see you review a Yamaha Revstar RSP20CR...the rusty rat is a cool looking one, but painting/colors aside, I'd love to see what you think about how it compares to a LP or any other guitars.
I have a 95 Les Paul studio lite, mine is the transparent blue finish. Mine has a birdseye top under that finish. I haven’t seen any others of that specific model with the Birdseye. So every once in a while I think they throw something extra good into things sometimes. I envision it as like an Easter egg for the buyer.
I bought a beautiful new "Frampton Epiphone Limited Edition Les Paul Custom" from Musician's Friend. It was packaged well, no damage and the set up was flawless. Nicest neck that I have ever played on an electric. If packaging is bad from places such E bay, it is most often the fault of people not doing a diligent job in take care of the guitar before shipping. If they are going to sell something, it is their responsibility to make sure it is packaged safely.
I really love that Modern Flying V. I've always been a fan of the Flying V ever since I saw Randy Rhodes play one. Although I don't care of the V2, the Modern V looks like a piece of Mid-Centruy Modern art.
No protection in the case, wrapped in cardboard, and leave the handle sticking out? The fact that the guitar arrived alive is good advertising for that case!
You're talking about Reverb. I have a Reverb story. A couple of years ago, I spotted a "pretty rare Fender Squire Telecaster bass" from the early 1970's. It looked beautiful from the pictures, so I broke my Cardinal rule about buying instruments online. I went ahead and ordered it. Got excited I guess. Well, when it got here, I unboxed it, actually no box. Just shipped in the case. No lock, nothing. So I pulled it out, and really was pretty nice. Finish was in great shape. Action was pretty high, on the edge of being unplayable. Ok, that's not a problem since I've been doing my own setups for many years. So I plugged it in, and nothing. Checked everything, still nothing. Electronics were shot. I had a friend help and he ran the serial number. Turns out it's not early 70's, it was a 2012. Everything was wrong with the deal. I tell everyone to stay away from Reverb. Nothing but lies and a ripoff.
I received a Charvel 375 Deluxe in an oversized box uncased. It had one wrap of bubble wrap around it and the trem arm still on the trem sticking through the side of the box. Somehow the guitar was unharmed. Ordered a Marshall combo from a store in Cleveland, OH. I live in KS. It showed up with a 1X2 sticking into the front of the amp and broke off even with the outside edge of the box. That one was odd. One other time I ordered a hardshell case for a Michael Kelly and the case was totally destroyed. Only way I see that kind of damage is if it was driven over somehow as it was flattened. No tire tracks on the box though.
Got my explorer on eBay and it had only one spot of damage, but with how well it was packed, it probably happened before or during packaging, not shipping. Asking the seller for specs and info will get you an idea of how used to instruments they are.
I received a Gibson Explorer once, through FedEx, that was shipped in only its case. Not one piece of cardboard or bubble wrapped. Just the case with the guitar in it. The case was damaged but the guitar was OK. Not surprisingly, the previous owner had not taken much care for the instrument and it was filthy. The case was full of dust, cat hair, crumbs, etc.
Did it arrive ok ? In theory it should but it's always hit n miss shipping anything. Have you ever been to one of the courier's depots see how they lob stuff around then pack bicycles , wheelbarrows , infact any old crap on top of stuff marked "Fragile" onboard the truck ?!
Man. I don't think you get the recognition you deserve for how well you edit videos and setup this system. Thank you for such well made videos, and the work you do. Always look forward to them, and you.
Bought a camera lens from what ended up being a pawnshop. At the time it was vaque who the seller was. It was supposed to be an exact match to my camera according to Ebay and the seller. You guessed it. Apparently it was for an older model DSLR camera and actually I believe it was actually more for an SLR rather than a DSLR as the locking mechanism didnt match.
@Douglas Bedore was supposed to be used but somewhat new. It's made by Sigma. I know they make lenses that match up but as I said it's obviously for an SLR not a DSLR. Since nothing lines up.
"Shipping accidents"; Way back in 79 I left my amp and 65 Fender Musicmaster II at my friends house after we jammed on a weekend. I came back the next week to jam and he looked really nervous. Turns out, his Mom got mad and tossed his Gibson SG and my Fender out the front door. My WAS NOT in a case but his was. Other than a paint chip, my bolt neck Fender was absolutely fine. His SG which was in the case, had a crack in the body at the neck joint.
I'm so happy for you that your first unboxing survived! I've purchased a lot of diecast models off of eBay and some sellers are clueless when it comes to properly packing items for shipping. Fortunately I've been able to repair the models and usually the seller refunds some or in one case all of the money and I get to keep the diecast!
I bought a 1982 Yamaha SG 1000 from an eBay seller in Japan ( I am in U.K.) which was quite expensive. It took about 6 weeks to arrive and I was worried it would be damaged in transit. I needn’t have worried. The guitar itself was tightly wrapped in bubble wrap, then placed into a padded gig bag with no room to move, then placed into a cardboard guitar shaped box which was then placed into a very thick cardboard outer box padded with brown packing paper. It was perfect 👍
0:50 I had an eBay seller wrap the guitar in bubble wrap ONLY and send it through USPS. Fortunately it was a Gen 3 Chainsaw case so no damage but otherwise I would have been pissed.
Austin, have you ever reviewed any of the Gibson "Japan only" 2015 Flying V's? They're basically reissues of the late 70's model Flying V's which are almost impossible to afford now. I have one in heritage cherry. It's amazing. Just wondered what your thoughts were on them.
Bought a guitar on "REVERB" . Was well boxed and had bubble wrap. When I opened the guitar case the headstock was broken off. It was mailed through the USPS. So I would put the blame on the shipping handlers.
That happens when they drop the box from a height. Happened to me once. No amount of brilliant packing can prevent that! My customer claimed his insurance $$ and hired a luthier, who did a seamless repair. So he got his guitar for the price of the work!
I started messaging anyone I buy with a link to reverb's packing instructions and even additional explanation in a message telling them that the box is likely to be dropped 10 feet multiple times and they practically TRY to destroy it. Even so I had one person send me a banjo in a box with a single crumpled up newspaper. It's so frustrating.
Ditto. Got a guitar not long ago off of reverb with some custom heavy strap locks. .. ....they were loose in the case on a vintage ibanez musician. The guitar looked like someone shot it 25 times with a bb gun. I've had better luck with ebay than reverb lately in terms of good deals, especially since you can still bid on real auctions on ebay, and I don't have some "rep" contacting me all the time from ebay telling me that I should call to further develop my "business plan". My business plan is to stop selling guitars on reverb like I originally did with ebay.
Honestly I don't get it. I sent him photos of how it arrived and he still blamed it on UPS AND MYSELF which I thought was very strange. Didn't even reply, just left a bad review and warned others of the seller. Its all you can do sadly
I have a '78 Deluxe in Cherryburst that does not have a burst on the back. The back and neck finish look very similar to that gold top. Its one of the best playing (and heavy) Les Pauls ive ever played, though. I'd love to know the weight on that first LP in the video.
no but ive always noticed that it's almost always either old soviet guitars, fender offsets or mosrite copies coming out of russia. their music scene must be really nifty
Bought a beautiful Burny from a Russian guy, he did the absolute shittiest packing job i ever encountered and the headstock was broken when it arrived. YMMv
I bought a Les Paul Custom from Russia a few years ago through Reverb. Seller was top class. Shipped very well, packed well. Just had to pay customs and import duties.
My local shop had one of those Chris Cornell from the last run and I noodled around on it. It was right after his death and the prices on anything to do with him automatically doubled, just like when EVH passed away. But I did run it through it's paces and it was the first time I have ever played Lollar p/u's. They're definitely their own unique tone, that much is certain. Thru a Fender Twin reissue it really had a sweet tone with a little reverb and a touch of delay. But the price was unbelievable. They were asking $9,200 for it. I think they've come back down a little, but not much.
In 2007,I bought my favorite guitar off Ebay. A 1995 US Hamer Vanguard. Beautiful, fine player. I’ve bought several guitars off Ebay without a problem ever..
There’s a brand new modern Flying V at my local retailer. They’ve had it since it’s release. And it’s just never sold. They took it down for a while and had it stored elsewhere, so it wasn’t sitting out for 2-3 years? Don’t know if you’re looking for another one. I’m in Canada. If so, send me a message 👍. Take care!
There are a lot of solid sellers on eBay. If you’re worried, check to see who it is before purchasing, check the buyer’s rating and maybe ask for insurance.
I've literally bought and sold hundreds of guitars on ebay. Only ever had one issue with shipment to me, ups delivered an EC1000 to a neighbor down the street (I ended up getting it fine) and once ups broke a jackson pro's neck when delivering to a customer, which they refunded promptly. If you're an honest seller or know what to look for when buying (there are red flags) you got nothing to worry about.
wanted to ty, I usually stick to local CL or Reverb. But I started looking on Ebay once in a while after some of ur vids, found a LovePedal Super Sic Tone Ive been looking for at half the price anywhere else (mint/box etc).
Still waiting for when you'll do some reviews on the music man guitars. Particularly the new sabre, which has the kind of flame and figuring that you seem to be attracted to.
I don't think the first LP Custom you've shown is a 70's model. In these years, there were no dot on the "i" on the headstock. Even if the case seems really vintage.
Kinda freaked at the idea of putting bubble wrap inside against the finish...especially after watching an episode where trogly talks about leaving some in and ending up with a permanent imprint on the guitar!
I've had multiple solid body guitars shipped just in the case. I even asked for it a few times because some people are confused on finding the right box. If it's a guitar case it's no longer just a box and those UPS or USPS workers are less likely to throw it around anyway. A hard shell case will protect it. Les Paul though, a bit more dangerous.
I love the fact that they had volutes on them, didn't hear much about headstock breaks back then. I wish Gibson would put volutes on all their guitars, it would save a lot of money and heartaches for we Gibson lovers.
at least it's in a case. had bought off ebay a few months ago myself. Luckily had no surprises, was decently packed by seller - in a rectangular outter box (didn't include case in sale, as was listed..)
Man, I’m supposed to start a new, higher paying job next month... I would’ve bought the slash guitar without question if I was all settled in at the new spot. Ah well, someday.
I've purchased several guitars on eBay - and they arrived in perfect condition. Of course, they came from different people and weren't all packed just the same as one another - but still - no problems...
I bought a new guitar online from a 'reputable' retailer... it wasn't in it's original box, it was wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap then sent in a large cardboard box... oh, and it had a cracked neck just behind the nut in both sides. Something told me it was a return, so returned it back. Some people do not give a flying...
At least yours had cardboard. I bought a Tacoma Thunderchief bass on EBay. The seller threw a tag on the handle of the case, and that's how it showed up at my door. Plenty of real estate there for Tolex shredding...for sure. WOW!
Again , that 125th LP Supreme is absolutely beautiful. And would/should sell quicker than anyone's slowest blink. Arrg bad timing for me, or I would have.
And congrats to the new owner of that one. That's a lifetime keeper. On video it's beautiful, I shake and shiver at how awesome it must look in person. You are one lucky person/owner.
I received a guitar through the mail once wrapped only in transparant bubblewrap. No bag, box or case....just bubblewrap and a bit of tape. It actually was completely fine, which surprised me enormously. Also surpised the postoffice would actually accept a package like that.
In Australia Reverb is not as popular like in the U.S. amd most of the sellers are U.S. sellers. If i buy online i usually buy straight from the store's website.
I will watch just about any unboxing video. My Martin D16E (acoustic guitar) has those "flames" (as you call them) on the top. In the acoustic world we call this visual imperfection on the top wood a "bear claw" (as it looks very much like a large (very large) bear claw). As this guitar ages more individual fingers of the bear claw become visible. Martin says the wood imperfections (it is "16" quality wood) do not affect the tone quality (so,so,sweet.) I can always at a glance of a group of similar "dreadnaught" style guitars (they can all start looking the same, can't they?) pick mine out in seconds.
At least they wrapped it to protect the tolex! Nothing worse than just a case just showing up with no protection

Thankfully it’s okay
Honestly just had a bad reverb experience with packaging as well.. yikes people
Yeah, my first (and only so far) buy on reverb was packed terribly too.
I've sure had shipping problems with Reverb.
Cool paint/finish on that V, yes I am with you.on unique and may not be made again, or to stay limited
I have a '78 Deluxe in Cherryburst that does not have a burst on the back. The back and neck finish look very similar to that gold top. Its one of the best playing (and heavy) Les Pauls ive ever played, though. I'd love to know the weight on that first LP in the video.
Anyone ever get a guitar imported from Russia, just asking because I want to know if there were any unusual problems.
no but ive always noticed that it's almost always either old soviet guitars, fender offsets or mosrite copies coming out of russia. their music scene must be really nifty
@@Brannington I've seen a lot of Rickenbacker copies showing up for sale from Russia
Bought a beautiful Burny from a Russian guy, he did the absolute shittiest packing job i ever encountered and the headstock was broken when it arrived. YMMv
Isnt the biggest country on the world? So Who knows..
I bought a Les Paul Custom from Russia a few years ago through Reverb. Seller was top class. Shipped very well, packed well. Just had to pay customs and import duties.
Those late 70's Les Pauls were known to be anchors ( very heavy guitars ) .
The Flying V is so cool. That weird shape and trippy color is awesome
You said the gold hardware tarnished? How does that work?
In 2007,I bought my favorite guitar off Ebay. A 1995 US Hamer Vanguard. Beautiful, fine player. I’ve bought several guitars off Ebay without a problem ever..
There’s a brand new modern Flying V at my local retailer. They’ve had it since it’s release. And it’s just never sold. They took it down for a while and had it stored elsewhere, so it wasn’t sitting out for 2-3 years? Don’t know if you’re looking for another one. I’m in Canada. If so, send me a message 👍. Take care!
I just got sent a guitar in only a cheap unfitted case, only got a small ding on the headstock.
how do you see Les Pauls with bigsby's trogly?

Is that a schaller bridge on the first one? I am looking for one like that
Yes. Feel free to email an offer. austin@troglysguitarshow.com
I had a facebook seller ship an acoustic, via UPS, in a thin gig bag with NOTHING around it. And the stupid thing was just fine!!!
Still waiting for when you'll do some reviews on the music man guitars. Particularly the new sabre, which has the kind of flame and figuring that you seem to be attracted to.
I own the honey suckle burst and let me tell you it's one of the most active guitars I've ever seen in terms of figuring
I don't think the first LP Custom you've shown is a 70's model. In these years, there were no dot on the "i" on the headstock. Even if the case seems really vintage.
Never thought about wrapping a guitar in a box like that!
Kinda freaked at the idea of putting bubble wrap inside against the finish...especially after watching an episode where trogly talks about leaving some in and ending up with a permanent imprint on the guitar!
I once received a trumpet "packed" just like that one-- wrapped in cardboard with the handle protruding! Believe it or not, it and the case were OK!
The flying V......the body is the star trek logo shape👍
at least it's in a case. had bought off ebay a few months ago myself. Luckily had no surprises, was decently packed by seller - in a rectangular outter box (didn't include case in sale, as was listed..)
2200 usd for the Slash one? It's the new model? It's 3.5k usd in Europe.
The finish on that Flying V is really cool!
This old guitar from 82 years has its charm, as it is dirty it can always be cleaned. New ones too are very nice but they lack this time patin
Patina isn't dirt .
@@shaunw9270 😁 For now, I still hear the 😎
I bought my dream guitar this summer off of Reverb and the shop packed it like the first one.
WOW!
That first ebay guitar looked to me like it had come out of an Egyptian tomb the way it was wrapped.
What is the closing song?
P&TY
Hi Trogly, would you recommend buying acoustic guitars on Reverb or is shipping too risky?
Where do you get all the money for these guitars????
Have order 3 guitars on ebay. All arrived safely mainly because they all came with good ABS cases. Good cases are the key.
Wow I was not expecting to fall in love with the finish on that modern flying v but omg!
Been away for a while joce to be back .I love this channel..feels like commin home brotha
I agree about that modern V...pick one up before they're gone and prices go through the roof on em!!
Yeah, that's a special one for sure.
Just received my new strat for negative $80.Yes they paid me.Soon to arrive is a Les Paul for ---$120
Wow! Tobacco burst is my favorite burst, that and the honey burst!...Gold Tops are my all time favorite though
your low e string is not in the saddle at 3:19 in the video. just saying.
I got an old Marshall 4x12 off eBay, it came with cardboard over the grill cloth and that was it....
Wonder what Robert Baker thinks of your new 70s Tobacco Burst LP lol?
Whoooooo hooooooo etc . He's reaching for his sedatives as we speak lol 😂
