Probably the first time I've seen a team mismanage a game so bad that one of their qb's from years prior feels compelled enough to step in and explain why everything feels rushed
Yep. I’ve been screaming at my tv for years about this. Waiting till the play clock hits zero means the pass rush doesn’t have to guess at the snap count. They know exactly when to go.
Something that baffled me watching the game. The Lions were hard charging on every snap, especially obvious pass plays. I don't remember seeing GB run a single screen pass to burn them for it. Not even a draw. There was one play action play that seemed to kinda fake a draw and Jacobs looked like he would have run for 10 yards on it if he had been handed the ball. I don't know enough to be able to tell if this is a legit comment, maybe there was a good reason why a screen would have been blown up but I didn't see it.
We use to be one of the best screen teams for decades. For whatever reason under Lafleur we haven't been good and this year particularly its been awful. We don't call them often and when we do it's ugly
@@AnthonyA-t8fWe used to be one of the best screen teams because we had runners. Jacobs is a great power back and exactly what we needed in that department but he can’t do screens nearly as effectively as Aaron Jones could.
@pandapocalypse5012 we barely did them with Jones too and the were pretty ugly most of the time. Think Lafleur is great but the screen game has been bad under him
That explains a lot. Refreshing perspective. Another thing that I have not seen anywhere is the play call and clock management on the last offensive drive. The defense had not been able to get off the field. Even Packers score a TD, there was no reason to believe that defense can prevent Lions scoring a TD or offense could get another chance. Packers didn’t even end up scoring a TD. Just a field goal tying the game. That was too much time on the clock for Lions to score and not enough to get the ball back at the same time
That's why the bad 4th down gamble end of 3rd quarter for Detroit. Campbell wanted detroit to get 3 possessions in the 4th, including the last one, and to give up a GB TD in as little time as possible to achieve this. It worked. Defence didn't get gassed also, had they punt
The Packers simply got out coached. Which seems to happen a bit too often with LaFleur. We even have a little fun pool each game - guess the quarter and minute LaFleur has to burn a time out because no one has a clue what's going on. Which he does at least once per game. The bonus round question is which quarter he'll waste a time out on a challenge which everyone knows from replay BEFORE he makes the challenge that he'll lose.
Lions coaching were the bully on the playground and punched Packers coaching in the mouth from the get go and they never recovered. It's criminal play calling not using Reed out of the slot. He's a playmaker that figuratively rode the bench all night. Inability to cover dig routes and screens killed us. Pass rush took a vacation to Cabo. Goff made a camp fire before being pressured. This loss is on Packer coaching and Gute draft picks.
And he’s damn lucky that our 2 starter DTs were out with injury. That was Pat O’Connor right there, don’t get me wrong he’s a good enough player but he’s no Alim McNeil or DJ Reader

I think other teams are going to be chomping at the bit for anyone we use and then let go or put on practice. Brad Holmes is the goat
I love this stuff Kurt. It's funny. Since the game all the sports outlets are clamoring how Matt LaFleur is one of the greatest coaches in the game today. This proves otherwise.
I appreciate the fact that we seem to take forever to get the play call in. Also, it would be so nice to have a pass rush. It would help tremendously to get a sack or two or even a hurry. Its nonexistent lately.
Good points. I guess I never really looked at the cadence and snap in such detail. Interesting analysis. They do take the play clock down on nearly every play. Maybe it is simply because of the inexperience of their offensive play makers. Or perhaps because of the complexities of Lafleur's offensive plays. Good analysis on your part Kurt.
My understanding of their play calling is Matt calls a play, and an optional second play for love to switch to. Love then has to relay that to the team, trigger motions to read the D, and then can it or start the snap count. Not surprising it takes 38 seconds most of the time.
Nice analysis. It was painful to watch the O-line vs Lions rush last Thursday. I didn't know at the time what the actual focus of the problem was. Now I do. The perception I get is the Lions DI that was right in Myers face first put his hands down and knew precisely where to place them. Then he leaned back a bit to make sure his head was not over the ball. He wasn't in the neutral zone but as close as possible. Lions must practice this a lot. Other teams are now going to reproduce that until the Packers find a way to counter.
In this game I thought it was the play calling. They spent weeks being ultra successful running the ball first with Jacobs. And Jacobs ran all over the Lions in the first game too until the game script got out of hand. But in this game LaFleur tries to get cute coming out the gate throwing the ball all over the place. 0 points. Then the second they just continuously hand the ball off the Jacobs, it's a long methodical TD drive. KEEP DOING THAT. Then in the 2nd half, they start throwing the ball to much again. Why? Love isn't very good against man coverage, which is what the Lions usually run, plus Doubs was out who is usually their man coverage beater. They should have featured Josh Jacobs more, including in the passing game. When they do, this offense works extremely well.
Thanks Kurt. My son mentioned your weekly breakdowns for each game so I subscribed. MLF had to know that using the same silent count or having Myers look between his legs to snap the ball was a losing proposition. MLF, Love, Myers and the offense better have alternate plan when they go to Seattle. That place is loud and has been the Packers house of horrors. Just because the defense stacks the box, MLF must run the ball. John Madden used to mention this on his broadcasts. He referenced the fact that it's not necessarily the yards per carry average, but the attempts, to show the defense they will run the ball no matter what. Those attempts often go from short or no gains to big gains in the second half. Josh Jacobs needs continued reps to be effective, which in turn makes MLF's/Love's play action game work.
The Packers not being able to run a dummy cadence on 3rd and 5 being the big issue really shows how high level football between championship contenders really comes down to just a handful of plays in the end.
I wanted to see more combined blitz packages on 2nd and 3rd down throughout the game, to keep them guessing, there weren't enough plays w 5 or 6 in the box.
Lions fan here. Solid breakdown. No BS. Nice work. I saw so many people complaining and they just need to relax. The Packers are good team and a young team. They aren't going anywhere and the Lions vs. Packers games now mean something for the first time in decades. I was there for the Favre to Sharpe hail mary in 92. Still hate Favre to this day. :P
Makes a lot of sense, they need to get that fixed!...A rod was always so predictable cause he would let the play clock go down all the way then snap it...Everytime!
One reason the Lions go for 4th down is because they know they can beat the Packers. Lions beat them at Lambeau Field under poor condition rather easily.
This same stuff happened vs miami. There were several times Love almost got tackled before he could hand the ball off. It's a problem and the rest of the league knows it besides the Packers. Also, the fact their safeties play so deep and linebacker so shallow that it leaves the middle open is a problem. Oh and the fact their corner and safety depth is awful
Oh that's super fascinating. Perhaps it would have been best for Jordan or coach to notice this guy straight up on the center ready to attack at a moment's notice on one. They could've adjusted and used dummy while setting up earlier. Third down, maybe try snapping at 10-15 seconds instead of letting it run. But that's also on the communication if those play calls are getting in so late. Also, good on the fans to impact the packers game here to HAVE to resort to silent counts. The fan element is huge!

As a bigger theme, this is why playing in places like ford field and Lumen field is so difficult as an opposing team. It’s LOUD. Ford field when the Lions are relevant on third down in these spots crowd noise routinely hits above 110 decibels and has been measured above 120 before. Forget about radioing in a play call, QB can’t hear the coach talking to him, an account of the fact that there’s the equivalent of a jet engine worth of crowd noise going on
I have complained for YEARS that we always wait until the last second to snap the ball. No hurry up offense, nothing. Makes it easy for defensive linemen to predict when the ball will be snapped.
As a Lions fan, the REFs were equally bad for both teams. Your breakdown is spot on. The Lions coaches picked up on this tendency and exploited it. The Packers front 7 on defense dominated the Lions OL. We couldn't run the ball. The Lions out coached yall and we took more risk. Both teams played hard and physical. This was a great game.
@brokentubing Yeah we did lol. The Lions fans were louder than the Packers fans. I been a fan since Stafford and Megatron, and I've never seen that much Honolulu blue at a rival's stadium before. It was a thing of beauty
I’m such a big fan of yours man. You’re killing it. I’m a lifelong Packers fan and even liked you in a few preseason games. Lmao 🤣 To see what you have been doing on YT from Madden to film breakdown I’m an even bigger fan. Great job breaking it down the reality of football. 🏈 ❤
Especially against the Lions defense which has been critically wounded for weeks now. Feels like the entire roster is MIA. It's a miracle we're getting crucial third down stops as often as we are considering the circumstances. But if I were to wager a guess, I'd assume the defensive coordinator is just drilling these guys to be as proficient as possible with the simplest bare-bones defensive schemes. With this many replacements, I'd imagine it's almost impossible to run any complicated defense with a lot of calls and rotating man/zone responsibilities.
Good insight, but if I were an opponent, I would put an edge or linebacker in a 2 point stance rather than a down lineman and alternate fresh bodies there. Meyers has a tough job. I LOVE the innovation and movement in the Packers offense but: 1. It must be tough for a 1st year receiver to learn it. 2. They sure could use Musgrave or another receiving tight end to relieve Kraft.
Wholly Shit, why am I just seeing these Kurt videos for the first time this season?!? This was the best damn breakdown in 3 minutes. Boom, I’m subscribing!
Kirk what's going on my man.. I bought your Foundation guide a few months back and I give it a 5 out 5 rating.. but I got a quick question for you.. what are all of the "Pick a Side Concepts" in football.. if i can get that knowledge from you.. I believe that will take my game to the next level
Dang bro, love your insight on this. Meanwhile I thought we were doing better on playcalls because we aren't having to burn timeouts constantly like Rodgers used to. But this makes total sense, never understand why teams would want to be getting up to the line with 10 seconds or less on the play clock.
It's a shame that no one that gets paid for the Packers actually picked this up. You need to run this piece once a day hoping some one sees it and gets it to the team.
Seeing this quick breakdown makes me loose a little faith in the coaching staff. It looks and feels like they were under prepared and not doing great self scout. Another example of GB being their own worst enemy. Getting beat by a P-squad defense that is obviously coached better than GB “elite” O is sad. I’m hoping they truly learn from this.
I def noticed that Lafleur offense has always been having long af play calls. Not to mention any adjustments, any can calls. Def a lot on a young offense When you always snap the ball last as hell, it helps the rush, It got AR12 sacked a few times in the playoffs. Esp in 2020
If they were so much better, (talent wise), why did it take a last second field goal to win? Your back-ups weren't good enough for a blowout win? I'll agree with you that your coaching staff out coached the Packers staff. Every Packers fan knows that going back to MLF's first year in 2019 and all the playoff losses with Rodgers as their QB. The Packers 2010-2011 Team had 19 guys on the IR and won the Super Bowl. Lions? We'll see. Philly will give the Lions all they can handle. They have just as good as an O-line, if not better, and their defense is better than the banged up Lions who won't out coach the Eagles staff. If the Packers can't win then I hope the Lions do. Philly has more talent and experience than the Packers do.
You misunderstand. I mean no disrespect to Green Bay. I'm just stating facts. The fact is that the Lions beat them while playing people on defense that they signed off the street. That mash unit defense held up for a half but wilted, understandably in the second half. That's the only reason the game was close. Had the Lions had reasonable health on defense, they would have won by double digits as they did in Green Bay. The Lions have beaten Green Bay 6 out of the last 7 games. Those are the facts.
@ why are you on a podcast site managed by a former Packers player reviewing what the player noticed the Packers coaching staff and players were not reacting to appropriately. Don’t you have a Lions site you should be on or did you show up to gloat? Your team is very good, but they haven’t won anything yet. And as last year revealed or this year, for that matter, past performance doesn’t indicate future success in the regular season or the playoffs. Each week is different. I’d recommend you throttle back your enthusiasm a bit until the Lions actually win something of consequence other than 6 of 7 wins versus the Packers since 2021. Here’a a few facts for you: 13 World Championships, 4 Super Bowl wins included - the Green Bay Packers. Zero (0) World Championships and or Super Bowl victories: Lions and Vikings. 106 wins - the number of Packer victories over the Lions, who have 78 during the history of this rivalry. And that also includes 2 Packers playoff victories over the Lions. Best of luck to your team in the playoffs. I’m for anyone but the Chiefs.
@ as are your comments. Come back when your team actually wins something, and we Packers fans will congratulate you and your team on that win, because that’s what real fans do not go to their rivals site to gloat or trash talk. 🤫
You are correct and I said this since the beginning of the season has a packer fan for 60 years this is the Packers gel year , I said the lions will win it all this year next year, we will clip everybody as long as there’s no more injuries The Packers won their Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers with everybody hurt. I expect the lions no less. This is their one year. Enjoy it.
The Packers biggest problem is Matt LaFleur. Run a play, it doesn't work, keep running it, it never works, don't adjust until the end of the game. Then in the post-game presser, say something like "We saw something on film that we thought would work, turns out we were wrong. We'll need to do a better job adjusting in the next game". Same bullshit after every loss.
I also want to know why not a single screen was called all night. They were teeing off and sending the house after Love every play. Wouldn’t some screen calls keep them a bit more honest?
I don't understand how they don't get their most dynamic asset (Jayden Reed) more than a single look. Yes i also have him on my fantasy team

Great analysis. I saw it as Youngest team versus vet team. Parity of talent now means most games are decided by 3-6 plays.
Awesome analysis
Great video man
As a Lions fan, the REFs were equally bad for both teams.
Your breakdown is spot on. The Lions coaches picked up on this tendency and exploited it.
The Packers front 7 on defense dominated the Lions OL. We couldn't run the ball.
The Lions out coached yall and we took more risk.
Both teams played hard and physical. This was a great game.
If you actually believe the refs were equally bad for both teams you’re actually dumb as rocks
What about stokes getting cooked? We need Alexander back
Excellent analysis! This is something i didn't notice watching the game.
Also can you explain why you choose the receivers you look at, like when you say were gonna go A,B,Rb. Would very much appreciate 🙏🏽
This also illustrates how big of a part home field advantage plays, what with the crowd noise.
The Lions did better at Lambeau
@brokentubing Yeah we did lol. The Lions fans were louder than the Packers fans. I been a fan since Stafford and Megatron, and I've never seen that much Honolulu blue at a rival's stadium before. It was a thing of beauty
Good stuff Kurt. You'd think the coaches would notice this in film study and do something about it.
I’m such a big fan of yours man. You’re killing it. I’m a lifelong Packers fan and even liked you in a few preseason games. Lmao 🤣
To see what you have been doing on YT from Madden to film breakdown I’m an even bigger fan.
I LOVE the innovation and movement in the Packers offense but:
1. It must be tough for a 1st year receiver to learn it.
2. They sure could use Musgrave or another receiving tight end to relieve Kraft.
That’s great, way to break this down, now send it to Green Bay and tell them to straighten their shit out! 😂
3:06 They also missed a hold on the same play (dude had his arm across the DE neck), so if the play was called correctly, they would've off set
Wow Kurt. Good job on that, very interesting.
Great insights. It's easy to dunk on Meyers but there is a lot of nuance to what might set him up for success.
“idk what the f*** he is looking at” 😂😂
Wholly Shit, why am I just seeing these Kurt videos for the first time this season?!? This was the best damn breakdown in 3 minutes. Boom, I’m subscribing!
Kirk what's going on my man.. I bought your Foundation guide a few months back and I give it a 5 out 5 rating.. but I got a quick question for you.. what are all of the "Pick a Side Concepts" in football.. if i can get that knowledge from you.. I believe that will take my game to the next level
Pick a side is where you go to 1 side if it’s 1 high or the other if it’s 2 high coverage
That’s just one example 🤝
Dang bro, love your insight on this.
Meanwhile I thought we were doing better on playcalls because we aren't having to burn timeouts constantly like Rodgers used to.
But this makes total sense, never understand why teams would want to be getting up to the line with 10 seconds or less on the play clock.
Goff and Detroit are so quick on their play calls, they can do 4 things pre-snap and then decide what to do.
Got Robbed
🤣 You no longer have anything to take.
Lafleur explained it as playing against a punt rush every single down lol
Def a lot on a young offense
When you always snap the ball last as hell, it helps the rush,
It got AR12 sacked a few times in the playoffs.
Esp in 2020
Green Bay is a good young team. The Lions even playing backups, simply have more talent, and are better coached.
@ericzenk6970 Your recommendation is irrelevant.
@ as are your comments. Come back when your team actually wins something, and we Packers fans will congratulate you and your team on that win, because that’s what real fans do not go to their rivals site to gloat or trash talk. 🤫
Watching film, how do coaches not notice these things and correct them
You are correct and I said this since the beginning of the season has a packer fan for 60 years this is the Packers gel year , I said the lions will win it all this year next year, we will clip everybody as long as there’s no more injuries The Packers won their Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers with everybody hurt.
Myers got a 0.0. This explains that, thanks.
Keep in mind... That guy you circled is off the Lions practice squad. First game he ever started in and hes been in the league for like 7 years.
All teams will be taking advantage if this continues.
Oh so you're saying the packers suck.
The Packers have done this for years. Even with Roger's, the opposing team always knew the snap was going on 1
And how are you able to look at all the people running routes and not miss an open person before the open window closes
this has been an issue before Jordan Love. its been there since the rodgers and McCarthy era
I also want to know why not a single screen was called all night. They were teeing off and sending the house after Love every play. Wouldn’t some screen calls keep them a bit more honest?
You the man!
Coach pretty boy hangs his offensive line out to dry.
