It has become less of a free platform for creativity and more of a system, it's more of an "every man for himself" type site where criticizing other TH-camrs is become a very trending type of video or channel. Because so many of these channels are growing, a lot of the viewers are influenced into automatically disregarding another channel simply because they are not what they want them to be. Although I don't make videos or do anything with entertainment, I can see that most famous youtubers, when they started weren't aiming for money and views, They were aiming to make people happy and to laugh and do what they love. Mark, you hit the nail on the head! I've noticed that instead of doing what they love, lots of creators want the fast track to subscribers and money, so they do "commercial-type" content. I think the best thing to do is make content that YOU love, and like-minded people will join you on this crazy journey that is TH-cam. Sure, views are awesome, and subscriber numbers are wonderful, but being surrounded by like-minded creative people is even more so rewarding. TH-cam is NOT my job, nor will it ever be. I have a full-time career that I adore, and don't want to ever leave. TH-cam is my hobby and a way for me to express my creative self. Lots of people are being very cut-throat and it's sad. There's room for everyone to grow :(

I know your vids aren't all G rated, but my kids are mature and smart, and I don't worry about that. What I worry about are these videos you're talking about. These people that are so negative and hate filled, and spend all of their time bringing others down, and being hateful to everyone, some of them most especially to their VIEWERS, the very people that get them their views and thus their paychecks - they are the ones I'm most concerned about. Great video, Mark. This is my tenth year on TH-cam, and I've noticed that it has its own little generational thing going on. Every three years or so, there's a change. It's become very corporate. Very cynical in many ways. It used to be about community, and following and supporting each others videos. Here's a little thing you may not know about, that I learnt about from my friend in California. It started happening in 2012. There are companys that set up huge warehouses, and then segregate these warehouses into little rooms. Each room is made to look like someones bedroom. Then young actors looking for a TH-cam career are sculpted into a 'current' look, and are handed 'hot' topics to talk about, which they deliever from their 'bedroom'. Everything is scripted, planned, and created to pull in viewers, and of course, money. Loads of money is funneled into marketing and promotion, which of course comes back to these companies in revenue. The good looking kid gets TH-cam career, and the business makes tons of money. This is happening even more with Twitch, and now gaming. My friend is a pretty good source, and has no reason to lie. That said, I have no idea if this is true or not, but it makes complete sense to me. It feels like the natural progression of what was once a brilliant, brilliant idea.
I want to say Gangnum Style changed everything. It was one of the first really big hits on TH-cam that everyone was aware of in the mainstream and as such made a lot of money and as time has gone on, users aren't getting the features they want that other services provide but you can't be on those because TH-cam is the video streaming service. If you're not putting videos on TH-cam, you're practically dead. Blip being killed off didn't help either as it offered a safety net for a lot of content creators and critics who used copyrighted material but in a fair use manner.
Sorry, Ally I should have mentioned that. Yes, these companies do all sorts in these places. Cooking, beauty stuff and loads more. Again, I haven't seen this or witnessed it. My friend was living in L.A at the time, but has since moved to San Diego, but is involved in TV, and general media.
TH-cam is absolutely terrible for animators. I have yet to be paid and have given up trying. But I haven't given up Animating, and I will continue to make short animated films, the only change is now they take longer to make cause i have to do them outside my dayjob.
If you don't have a problem with animating moments from youtube videos, Arin Hanson apparently pays pretty good for Game Grumps animated shorts. Sure animation always takes a while, but if you ever want to tackle a small project here or there, try to get in touch with him.

I am a big fan of GradeA UnderA. I've never been much of a fan of Markiplier, but I had seen this video when it came out. Now... let me say that I'm sorry for Grade's recent video. He didn't make any real point and he went too far trying to bash on Mark. Grade says that Mark shouldn't be taken seriously, while he admitted at 11:31 himself that he just rambled! He had something on his mind and it was interesting listening to it. It's just sad how triggered Grade got, and I really couldn't take HIM seriously in the end. He was saying over and over again that this was the "worst fucking video" he'd ever seen, like a dozen times, like wtf... Most GradeA fans on his recent video are commenting likewise... So, Mark... a lot of us GradeA fans stand by you on this one. You did nothing wrong.

So basically it's the videos in his videos that he found on youtube is the main highlight of it not so much for his actual videos unless you count other people's videos as his video because it was in his video lol.
It's all repetition, that is how it work, repetition is rewarded, laziness is rewarded, one off videos are not rewarded. Everyone is doing the same type of channels, reviews, commentary, gaming, tearing down other youtubers, stuff that can be made quickly, cause the algorithm needs videos and lots of them in the fewest time possible. Originally folks just posted to youtube for fun, and it was fun. Also corporations are really taking control of youtube, and that limits new things being created, or at least dong well. For all I know there are just as many wacky one off videos being made today as ever, it is just that we aren't being allowed to see them.

I always watch my old videos. Helps me remember why I started and keeps me from losing myself. Mark is right, money is important. The $5-$10 I get a month can pay for my lunch during my breaks at work. I can go to 7-11 and buy a few Slurpees and a soda. Just remember what you used to use TH-cam for, and ask yourself if you're still doing it for the same reasons.
+EMPiiRE™ I used to make videos just for fun, in 6 years I felt no need to become a partner until last month I saw my views, 2.5M in total, and I thought to myself "I could've bought a game with that money to make this other video" so last month I started monetizing for the very first time and ever since then I started realizing the kind of video I didn't enjoy making is the kind that has the most views and makes more money, also, it's the one that takes less effort and requires less time to make, so I thought of changing my content mainly to that kind but ever since I monetized I have been procrastinating from making videos while years ago making videos was my form of procrastination. I'm forgetting why I started uploading to youtube and this video made me really think of the kind of video I'd be doing even if there's more effort and no pay, it's what I truly enjoy but...is it really worth my time? That's what I still need to figure because just like you I make minimum money from this.

youtube changed the instant people stopped posting for fun and started posting for money. not saying that it's all a bad thing either, there's some awesome content out there that the creators deserve to make something from. but it's just the fact of it. money changes things. always.
+rockbass I agree with you the popular TH-camrs we know today started it years ago and stuck with it because they loved what they were doing, not expecting it to be what it is today. But more and more people are jumping onto tha train of TH-camrs is causing that pure content to get darker and muky with so many people not doing it no longer for the fun of doing it but because of what you get out of it. There are so many people posting the same content that it is getting old, recycled, and unfresh so when person A posts a video like person B and person C they become more attackful and soon A B and C are making the same videos and the freshness, the fun, the thing that made them views is now a big sea of stale material that no one wants to see and A B and C become nothing in the world of TH-cam and chances are they hate eachother because TH-cam changed them.
Game Grumps make videos just to have fun and make videos that are at least 10 minutes long. They still have a slow subscriber rate. Seananners is a motivational speaker and a guy who wants to have a good time and only recently started making videos that are at least 10 minutes long. He is still at 2 million subscribers. Those are 2 of the biggest exceptions to your argument.

Markimoo, this is why I love you. I have 4 kids, 2 of them are at the "youtube viewing" age. If I hear your voice coming from where they're sitting, I don't worry about what they're watching. I know your vids aren't all G rated, but my kids are mature and smart, and I don't worry about that. What I worry about are these videos you're talking about. These people that are so negative and hate filled, and spend all of their time bringing others down, and being hateful to everyone, some of them most especially to their VIEWERS, the very people that get them their views and thus their paychecks - they are the ones I'm most concerned about.
At least with you, I know that they are seeing someone who is a positive role model. This is my tenth year on TH-cam, and I've noticed that it has its own little generational thing going on. Every three years or so, there's a change.
It's become very corporate. Very cynical in many ways. It used to be about community, and following and supporting each others videos. Here's a little thing you may not know about, that I learnt about from my friend in California. It started happening in 2012.
There are companys that set up huge warehouses, and then segregate these warehouses into little rooms. Each room is made to look like someones bedroom. Then young actors looking for a TH-cam career are sculpted into a 'current' look, and are handed 'hot' topics to talk about, which they deliever from their 'bedroom'.
Everything is scripted, planned, and created to pull in viewers, and of course, money. Loads of money is funneled into marketing and promotion, which of course comes back to these companies in revenue.
The good looking kid gets TH-cam career, and the business makes tons of money. This is happening even more with Twitch, and now gaming.
My friend is a pretty good source, and has no reason to lie. That said, I have no idea if this is true or not, but it makes complete sense to me. It feels like the natural progression of what was once a brilliant, brilliant idea.

I want to say Gangnum Style changed everything. It was one of the first really big hits on TH-cam that everyone was aware of in the mainstream and as such made a lot of money and as time has gone on, users aren't getting the features they want that other services provide but you can't be on those because TH-cam is the video streaming service. If you're not putting videos on TH-cam, you're practically dead. Blip being killed off didn't help either as it offered a safety net for a lot of content creators and critics who used copyrighted material but in a fair use manner.
Sorry, Ally I should have mentioned that. Yes, these companies do all sorts in these places. Cooking, beauty stuff and loads more.
Again, I haven't seen this or witnessed it. My friend was living in L.A at the time, but has since moved to San Diego, but is involved in TV, and general media.
TH-cam is absolutely terrible for animators. I have yet to be paid and have given up trying.
But I haven't given up Animating, and I will continue to make short animated films, the only change is now they take longer to make cause i have to do them outside my dayjob.

It's all repetition, that is how it work, repetition is rewarded, laziness is rewarded, one off videos are not rewarded. Everyone is doing the same type of channels, reviews, commentary, gaming, tearing down other youtubers, stuff that can be made quickly, cause the algorithm needs videos and lots of them in the fewest time possible. Originally folks just posted to youtube for fun, and it was fun. Also corporations are really taking control of youtube, and that limits new things being created, or at least dong well. For all I know there are just as many wacky one off videos being made today as ever, it is just that we aren't being allowed to see them.

I always watch my old videos. Helps me remember why I started and keeps me from losing myself. Mark is right, money is important. The $5-$10 I get a month can pay for my lunch during my breaks at work. I can go to 7-11 and buy a few Slurpees and a soda. Just remember what you used to use TH-cam for, and ask yourself if you're still doing it for the same reasons.

People in these comments are out of control, you're seriously going to go after Mark because he's against the drama and recognizes how much things have changed, because he's absolutely right? youtube changed the instant people stopped posting for fun and started posting for money. not saying that it's all a bad thing either, there's some awesome content out there that the creators deserve to make something from. but it's just the fact of it. money changes things. always.

+rockbass I agree with you the popular TH-camrs we know today started it years ago and stuck with it because they loved what they were doing, not expecting it to be what it is today. But more and more people are jumping onto tha train of TH-camrs is causing that pure content to get darker and muky with so many people not doing it no longer for the fun of doing it but because of what you get out of it. There are so many people posting the same content that it is getting old, recycled, and unfresh so when person A posts a video like person B and person C they become more attackful and soon A B and C are making the same videos and the freshness, the fun, the thing that made them views is now a big sea of stale material that no one wants to see and A B and C become nothing in the world of TH-cam and chances are they hate eachother because TH-cam changed them.
Game Grumps make videos just to have fun and make videos that are at least 10 minutes long. They still have a slow subscriber rate.
Seananners is a motivational speaker and a guy who wants to have a good time and only recently started making videos that are at least 10 minutes long. He is still at 2 million subscribers.
