Maratha Cuisine In Bengaluru. Military Style Food In Bangalore. Ragi Mudde and Mutton Chops Thali.
Gorge on mouthwatering military-style food, especially robust mutton dishes at Marata Darshan in Bengaluru. Established by Shantharaj Lad back in 1989, this humble eatery is known for its wholesome military style meals served for breakfast and lunch. Presently run by the father, mother and son trio, the reason behind the restaurant’s success are traditional recipes by the mother, Hemavathi Bai.
Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna meets the family in this episode of Gourmet On The Road. He unveils the secret behind the eatery’s success and explores the must eat dishes here through a short kitchen tour. He then sit downs for a meal tasting the Mutton Chops Thali served with either rice and the restaurant’s signature Ragi Mudde, Koli Saaru, Mutton Kheema Curry and a bowl of Soppina Saaru. He also tastes must-try sides, a peppery Mutton Liver Fry, a flavourful Chilli Chicken, a wet Chicken 65 made with a yoghurt gravy and Mutton Korma.
    NAATI KOLI SAARU
the gravy of this naati koli saaru certainly has some chilli kick to it. one can also taste layers of spice and the garam masala. the soft, pasty ragi mudde is perfect to be dunked into this flavourful saaru.

    9/10
    MUTTON CHOPS
the meat in this hearty curry has a good distribution of fat and the mutton still has its bite intact. the masala has a mellow lingering heat perhaps from some warm spices like cloves and cinnamon. the mutton with the gravy makes for a juicy bite.

    9/10
    CHICKEN PEPPER
this chicken is liberally spiced with pepper that gives it a delicious, toasty flavour note. you taste the juiciness of the chicken that has been cooked to perfection and the freshness of coarse ground pepper and a slight savouriness perhaps from some onion.
    rs 140 (2 usd)
    9/10
    CHILLI CHICKEN
easily one of the best ‘local-style’ chilli chicken I have tasted! the chicken just yields, and parts effortlessly from the bone. the masala made with plenty of tomatoes and green chilli is fingerlicking good! the chilli heat isn’t palate-numbing like other versions of its ilk.
    rs 130. (1.80 usd)
    9.5/10
    CHICKEN 65
the chicken 65 here is a wet gravy of chicken kebab tossed in a thick gravy of yoghurt, curry leaves, dry red chillies and spices. the flavour of the dish is a little too tart, an interesting take on the 65, but plays a distant second fiddle to the other dishes.
    rs 140 (2 usd)
    7/10
    KHEEMA UNDE GRAVY
love the rogan or thin veil of fat floating over this thick, lush gravy that is perfect to be ladelled over the unde or meatball. all you taste is the meat and the gentle spicing. the gravy merely straddles the unde without overpowering its nuanced flavour. the quality of meat in this dish is just brilliant!
    rs 170 (2.40 usd)
    9.5/10
    MUTTON LIVER PEPPER FRY
mutton liver can usually be tough when cooked this way but in this dish, the meaty liver is quite yielding to the bite. there's none of the gamey meatiness. you taste the roasted pepper. to hold itself up to the meatiness of the liver, the strength of the pepper is a lot more apparent in this preparation.
    rs 170 (2.40 usd)
    8.5/10
    SOPPINA SAARU
love the earthy flavours of this soppina saaru that is made with a bunch of different greens. you can sense the nourishment you get from every scoop of rice that's soaked in the soppina saaru!
    8.5/10
    RASAM
this almost clear rasam has an apparent tartness from some tamarind and you can definitely taste prominent notes of cumin or jeera.
    7/10
