    Just a tidbit of info if you are unaware. Leveling of the A/C unit is crucial to it's performance. The A/C has what's called a splatter fan in the back of the unit. It is this fans job to "splatter" the coils with the condensed water in the back of the unit. This drops the temp of the coils down about 15 degrees which in turn will make your air blow about that much cooler. If your A/C is tilted too far out all that water will drain out and the unit will run very warm because there is no water for the fan to use. Unit should be level to a slight outward tilt but not so much that all the water drains out. When done properly you will hear the water "splatter" when the unit turns on. Of course this will be crucial to watch in an RV because of ever changing parking. Great videos just subscribed to your channel as well.

      Good info, and welcome aboard. The air coming out at the vent was measured 44-46 degrees with a laser thermometer so I think i got the leveling right. I also have a 2nd fan installed at the back of the a/c that helps suck the heat out through the grille in back.

    Thanks, Tom, for another excellent video with easy to follow explanations. It's so great you can run the AC economically on the small genny. I didn't see a drain hose for the AC, how does it get rid of the accumulated water it pulls out of the air?

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Apparently, modern a/c units evaporate collected humidity out of the hot side. I can say this is true because when I first turn it on it smells like a swamp.

    • @halfheart3360

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have mine installed on a very slight tilt but there is no water leakage. My guess is that the water pools in a pan and then is evaporated by the main fan.

    Oh man!!!! I have been pining for the solution you gave us here! This summer we moved from California to South Carolina. I have my travel trailer but I also have a truck camper that does not have air conditioning. My propane refrigerator is starting to fail and I was wondering if I could pull that refrigerator out of that spot if I could put an air conditioner in. One of my questions was about the generators ability to run the AC all night long. I was looking at propane generators but then ran a crossed auxiliary tanks that can feed the smaller generator. I would really be curious to know if your generator can run the AC in a hot environment all night long as you sleep. Thanks for putting this out there and at the perfect time too! It’s hot and humid in South Carolina!

    Im building a van with a rear garage and plywood wall about halfway inside the van. Would it be safe to stick the rear of the AC in the garage and the front into the cab? Would a vent out of the rear door or side of the van be beneficial? I need to keep it locked and closed up so my dirt bike is secure while I sleep

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if the garage area has a vent fan with a separate fresh air inlet to promote a cross draft otherwise the a/c will overheat.

      @@HOBOTECH So maybe a roof vent with an inlet fan right above the AC and another roof fan pushing air out just in front of the rear doors? Thinking about going to portable ac route also. Maybe I could duct it out of the side wall. Only problem is that takes up a lot of space.

    HoboTech, what about using one of those ac units as a tent ac when traveling? Get to your spot, set the ac unit on a table, put some type of duct or "sock" on the front of it to the tent and turn it on. Aside from tent walls having no insulation, could a person do that or maybe do the same to a van interior as a temporary cooling fix? I am trying to figure out what to do without installing one and using it as a tabletop with the unit outside.

    just an FYI, the only difference between a "low cool" setting and "high cool" setting is fan speed. The compressor does not change speed only the fan. The difference on a amp scale between low fan and high fan are something like .5amps or less I would think.
    good vid for sure.. and a sure fire system. I saw similar video on cheapRV living and they used the energy star version of this model which has a SEER of 12.2 vs this model SEER of 11.1.. While it does have remote control it cost $50 more.. I am like you simple is better. again hats off to ya..

    Thank you for your videos. Actually, I came across your video on solar panel insulation on a fiberglass roof. This was greatly helpful to me as I am in the process of buying a modified horse trailer with a fiberglass roof. However, having a roof air conditioner takes up tons of space...causing shadowing and limiting the number of roof panels. So it is nice to know there is a solution for a window air conditioner that can actually run on solar...and 1 or 2 more roof panels ( instead of roof air conditioner ) might make the difference. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE it if you would post your installation video...or if you ( or one of the experienced people reading this ) would post some links about the best ways to do this: are there better windows to have the manufacturer of the trailer to install..with the intention of installing an air conditioner? Are there safety issues or regulation issues with a window air conditioner on the road? Are there brackets made for RV windows to support air conditioners ? When I brought up the idea of no roof air conditioner, and a window air conditioner instead...to the builder, he had not heard of this being done on a very thin RV wall ( as opposed to a 4+ inch wall of a house ) . Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My uninstall/install video won't help you because it is Roadtrek specific and they already had it figured out at the factory. I've seen people in vans pop out a back window and install an a/c there. I doubt there are any specific brackets or kits for a/c install. RV's are custom made so they usually fabricate mounts at the factory. You'll likely have to do the same.

    At 3:52, your gen stalls because you turned the thermostat to a lower setting then cranked it back up immediately. Mine does the same thing and draws ( or tries to draw ) 18 amps when the unit normally draws 4-5 amps. My gen then stalls. Does anyone know the reason why the unit draw so many amps in this condition and how to avoid it?

      It's easy. Only takes a couple of hours. You'll have to drill a new hole like I did to fit the GFI. You made the right choice. The 2,000 watt uses about the same amount of fuel as the 1,000 for a given load and it can run an AC that size with ease while in eco mode. I have a Honda eu2000i it will run up to a 12,000 btu in eco mode. Though a 12,000 will occasionally trip the over load while trying to start in eco mode.

      @@THX..1138 Have you had the over load light over the time you have had the Honda 2000 to come on alot? Reason I ask I had a cheap Chinese 80cc inverter generator and I burned it up using it for 6 months pretty heavy off-grid. The generator board seemed to burn up the motor would run the generator but wouldn't make any electrical power the overload light would come on and no power output on the generator. Luckily they traded it in for a brand new one but I was a little concerned about burning up another one. I would rather have had my money back. Since then I have bought a Honda 2200 inverter generator dual fuel and I only run on propane. I could always parallel the two together using the dead man's cord I made.

I'm going to look at an E250 van this weekend and if I pick it up I'll be copying some of the Roadtrek layout. I just don't know if there will be enough room for the bathroom in the same location.

    The AC ( Frigidare FFRA0511R1E) is no longer available. Do you have another recommendation or any information that might help me find a good substitute? So far reading the info on 'similar' AC units I cannot find a description that includes 'soft start'. Thank you. Your videos are very helpful.

      Try to get a non-digital air conditioner make sure about the return policy and try it, if it doesn't work you can take it back. No small air conditioners that I know of have microair easy start in them. and when I talked to micro air easystart deciding what I'm going to do. you can only install micro air easy starts in the big rooftop RV air conditioners 13,500 and 15,000 AC's.

    Any solar generators that can run this AC?

    The small 2 cycle model from Harbor Freight will start and run a 6000 btu. Used one for years at deer camp. I think it was 700 running watts. They still sell them.

    I have that same Soortsman generator and a 5000 BTU AC like that. All I do is fire up the generator and plug it in to my 30 amp service receptical on my 16ft trailer and turn on the AC.. no problems. My main concern is A C for sleeping.

    the Chevrolets have a plastic fuel pump housing that you can drill a hole in and stuff a 1/4 inch hose down there to suck fuel from the vans gas tank , you run the long 1/4 inch hose back to the rear bumper and put a quick disconnect on the end , then plug your generators fuel line into the quick disconnect.
    May have to add a inline fuel pump if the Sportsman doesn't have one.

    the compressor has cycle through its run from hi pressure to normal; if you read the ac instructions it will show to WAIT a certain number of minutes if you turn off the unit while the compressor is running until turning the unit back on & into the cooling cycle

    How long will a gallon of gas last on regular mode? I'm guessing economy mode is what you listed 13 hours

    Love all the videos. Curious, how long do you think this would run off your battery bank and solar panels if you wanted to? Do you think it even could?

    I've seen other videos running this AC on a Goal Zero. Would love to see that test with the multitude of solar generators you have tested. I am looking for a setup to keep my dogs cool for a few hours in the van so I can travel with them and keep them safe. Thanks for all the videos you do. Always useful real world applications. 🐕🐕
