My dad, a sergeant in the US Army during WW2, was stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland. He said the "Newfies" were great and treated the US soldiers so well. He had fond memories of his stay there.
Newfoundland wasn’t even a part of CANADA during that time, which is also important to note. Fought in those wars as Newfoundland. A lot has changed since then.
ngl, im about to watch this whole series of Newfoundland LOL. the quality of the video seems really high, you guys definitely deserve more subs! I'm 18 and live in Virginia, US, and i first saw the views of this province 2 years ago and ive literally fallen in love with it. i seriously want to do exactly what you two are doing in the future. amazing video and i hope to explore Newfoundland myself one day
I just stumbled upon your videos of our amazing province! The beauty of this island never ceases to amaze me. I never get sick of the spectacular scenery here. Your enthusiasm and love for our beautiful homeland is very heartwarming. After living in Ontario for the last 38 years, we just retired one year ago, back to our little hometown of 500 people. I wake up every morning and have to pinch myself because I can’t believe that we get to live here every day for the rest of our lives!!! So thankful for this privilege! Your videos are truly amazing and have captured every single, important detail of this province! Bravo! A new subscriber and fan!
I'm loving this! I just started following your guys last week & your Vietnam travels as I'm heading there soon. Then you're on my backdoor camping in Squamish....and now you guys are in Newfoundland where I am originally from! Have a great time, enjoy the sights and sounds and mostly the warm hospitality of Newfoundland!
That is awesome! Everyone has been so nice and friendly in Newfoundland! We have loved it here and it's now one of our favorite places we've visited in North America! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Newfoundland is spectacular and as you said it's very different from any other part of Canada. As someone that's taken both ferry trips and done many cruises I can tell you that the their is WAY MORE movement on the ferrys than on cruise ships. Looking forward to seeing this trip unfold.
This was my very 1st episode of A+K. And it was not my last of today. I started watching your videos at 10am. It's now 4pm. LOL. These videos are amazing. My friend's cousin did Ragbrai in 2021 and said it was the hardest thing she's done (and she's run 3 marathons). Super awesome achievement guys. Wow. Well done!!!!!! Happy new sub right here!! Love and light from the East Coast of Canada(NB).(So happy to see you enjoying our slice of heaven).
LOVE Newfoundland. The people are so kind, welcoming and helpful. I spent 9 weeks in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2019. It was incredible. Still wearing my Gross Morne Sweatshirt. Camped in every campsite at Gros Morne NP. Will love to travel with you. Enjoy.
My parents started a dulcimer organization in Beaumont,Tx. They have been playing for 35 years at nursing homes, schools, churches, etc. So fun to listen to.
We live in the Boston area and have been a few times driving up and taking the same ferry. We LOVE Newfoundland also. It is spectacular. It is fun to watch you guys travel there.
Being on a car ferry is so wild! We did on in Washington state a few years back, I couldn't imagine what a 7 hour ride would be like! Although, I imagine having a cabin makes the ride much more comfortable 😊 It looks beautiful, I cant wait to see your episodes exploring the area!
Newfoundland, what a beautiful and remote island. I envy you guys could have so much time travel to this wonderful place, and I wish I could put my foot on this amazing area in the future.
So glad you could go to Newfoundland! I did the same ferry run with my parents in 1985 when I was 25. I understand how you could feel " seasick". I was ok going over as I was outside most of the trip. On the way back to Nova Scotia, the weather was cooler and rainy so I was sitting inside. What a difference! As soon as I got back on land, I felt fine!🙄❤
Hello Adventurers, and WOW! I can't wait to see ALL of Newfoundland and I am stoked about this amazing adventure and can't wait. I'm all Ready Kathryn and Adam!!
I spent a week in St John's during my Navy days. Good times. It was Canada Day as well as John Cabot's 500th anniversary. George Street was hopping. CCR played on the jetty right beside my ship. Fun week - from what I remember.
I’m fr Manitoba and went to Newfoundland first time in my life in 2022. And wow I realized how truly beautiful my home country of Canada is. Can t wait to watch your reactions once you are at Gros Morne. It is an amazing island.
Wow! I’m so excited to see Newfoundland!!! The whole ferry experience seems like it would be fun! This was another great vlog…made my day! Love to see it!
We feel and can identify your enthusiasm! We felt the same on our trip 4 years ago! We will definitely visit again,as we only had 10 days there! Our little fur baby stayed in our truck for the ferry trip, when we headed back to the truck, the four way flashers were on, oh my, she is smart! LOL! Look forward to the vlogs to come!
Hi guys! This is such a great trip you had! As I said before, we will be following your steps in 2024, but from the North, through Quebec and Labrador. Great filming as always! You are a blast to watch!
Adam and Katherine - great to see you heading off to explore Newfoundland and Labrador. I drove from Saskatoon to Halifax in August. Had planned to go via northern Quebec to Labrador to Newfoundland but vehicle issues resulted in just driving directly to Halifax. Enjoy all your videos… you research what to see so well! i.e.- I wish I’d seen your Tuktoyaktuk videos before I drove up there… I was there about a week before you arrived. Have a great time…can’t wait to see the rest of your trip!
I’m from St. John’s and have just enjoyed your Newfoundland vids. You remind me why I love home! I’m super impressed by your pronunciation - well done!! I’ll start enjoying your other travels now, your zeal is addictive 💖
Thank you so much! That means a lot! We loved Newfoundland and will definitely be back to see more and experience more of the culture. It's a place unlike any other!
The area you guys stayed for the night when getting of the ferry is called mouse island in Port Aux Basques.I grew up in that area, spent my childhood playing on those rocks by the ocean.
So awesome!! I would love to visit Newfoundland !! I live in Maine and it’s a bucket list country!! Thanks 🙏 so much for sharing!! Have a wonderful safe time!! I’m so excited 😮😊❤❤❤
I’m arriving here very late, but here’s a fun fact for you. That ferry (and its sister ship the Highlanders) carry 4,000,000L (1,056,803.17 US Gallons) of fresh water. At any given time there is 100,000L (26,420 US gallons) of hot water available to the showers to the Passenger Cabins on deck 8. The water is heated by utilizing the waste heat from the main engine exhaust, and it’s theoretically impossible to run out of hot water while the shit is underway.
We took that ferry in Aug 1989. We spent the night in the parking lot, I think we were going without reservations. It was so hot, the A/C on the ship wasn't working, the stabilizers weren't working, and we discovered Gravol made my 4 year old brother hyper instead of sleepy like the rest of us. We didn't get a cabin...LOL
This was so cool to see your adventures on the ferry! I'm so glad that the hot water didn't fail you! 😂 The time zone thing is SO funny! When I went to Nepal their time is 15 minutes different than India's! So that's a fun fact for you! 😉 I just LOVE y'all's videos! Your enthusiasm about every place you go is refreshing! 😍 Happy trails from a fellow Texan!🤠
A significant historical event happened on the Sydney to Port aux Basques ferry route with the sinking of the ferry boat Caribou by a German U-boat in October of 1942. About 130 civilians, mostly women and children lost their lives. Caribou was being escorted by the Canadian warship HMCS Grandmere that spent 90 minutes searching for the U-boat, dropping depth charges before returning to pick up survivors, this being standard orders in those days.
THANK YOU!!!! I follow lots of vanlife travelers and I am always soooooo disappointed when they head to eastern Canada and skip a visit to Newfoundland. I am looking forward to following your journey. I hope you will visit Hearts Content and see where the first successful transatlantic cable was laid (connecting the old world to the new world). Also, THANK YOU for pronouncing Newfoundland correctly!!!!
Newfoundland was at the top of our list for Atlantic Canada and was a wonderful experience! Unfortunately we didn't make it to Hearts Content to see where the cable was laid. We'll have to check that out on our next visit. We have 5 more videos to release from our time here so stay tuned!
With that ferry, you have the option for driving back to the rest of Canada through Labrador and Quebec. We did that in reverse 5 years ago in May. That crossing was through pack ice following an icebreaker. It’s an extra 1,000 km, but a shorter and much cheaper ferry ride. Have fun in NL. We spend our summers there.
Funny you said you hadn’t showered in awhile, because I was just admiring how long and curly your hair was Kathryn! I think I have only seen your hair down briefly in just one of your videos. I ok forward to seeing more of Newfoundland.
I took the same trip in 2022 August and loved Newfoundland. I did both ferry trips. I live on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada and drove across my country. I loved Newfoundland. You did a good job on the video but you should have spent more time hanging OUT of your cabin. Meeting people. Good job.
Memories of my wife and I doing the same thing a couple years ago. Hopefully you aren’t too late for the tourist shops to close for the season. When we went in October 2021, the Puffins had already gone to sea and the Moose seemed to be hiding from hunters. Did see Elk though in Gros Morne.
Are you familiar with Operation Yellow Ribbon? It's about the roll that Gander NFLD played during 9-1-1- when the US shut down American air space. The town of Gander (pop 10,000) took in and cared for 6000+ international passengers. It's a real heart warming story that was made into a play that won a Tony award on Broadway. The Gander airport has an interesting story too.
I’m a Nflder. About 20 or so years ago, Marine Atlantic experimented with high speed hydrofoils on the Sydney/Port aux Basque route. While very fast, it was the most nausea-inducing trip possible giving a suitable nickname …. The “Vomit Comet”!! The experiment didn’t last long!!
I once took a 3 hour high speed one way back in my 20s that used to go from Bar Harbor, ME to Yarmouth, NS and it lived up to that name of the vomit comet as I tossed up over the side.
I had never heard of that board game. I'd love to find a copy of that. One of the towns mentioned on the box, Leading Tickles, is on the list of places I recommend you visit. It's a gorgeous place with an amazing little campground called Oceanview Park.
Rule number one, never let your dog go into the ocean, one mouthful of water and it’s going to be a bad day. We did Fogo Island camping last year and it was wonderful. Great video.
OK this was great, but I think it is time we started seeing a Kona cam. We need to see what Kona is up on each adventure (like riding the ferry in the van).
Adam and Kathryn you're going back to Nova Scotia later in the fall? Could the Celtic Colours festival be in your future? If so, I'm so jealous and excited to see that episode!!! That festival is a bucket list thing of mine.
Just finished a 16 day Newfoundland trip. Almost $900 for a round trip counterclockwise. 16.5 hours there and 8 back . Dropped the ball and turned down a cabin for the 16.5 to get there.
I love this Maritime series. Been thinking about going up that way for some time(only gone as far as Acadia). We would only be up there a max of two weeks and doing hotels; so it would be doing the highlights of NS & PEI. Doubtful we would get to Newfoundland. Utah question. Would you recommend doing Peak-a-boo or Devils Garden to late 50s early 60s years old?? I am leaning heavily to do Devils Garden and not doing Peak-a-boo. To me though, the entry is the only stumbling block. BTW-love your channel and like that you stay in areas for weeks at a time so you get more out of it vs scratching the surface.
Hi! I think it just depends on our comfort level of climbing up that entry point. If you can see someone do it ahead of you that helps. At least it did for us. We almost backed out of it. Once you're in there though it's a ton of fun! Not sure if that helps! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Loved the video. Faithful subscriber! We were in Newfoundland for two weeks in July. Kind of a mini Iceland. When were you there? Would love if you would post in the description the dates you were at the places you show in the videos. I like to use your videos to help plan future vacations. Happy travels!
Thank you! We haven’t been to Iceland but some parts do look similar from what we’ve seen! We usually post no more than 1-1.5 months delayed so if you look at the post date of the video it’s usually within a couple weeks of when it was posted. Thanks and thanks for watching!
I have been on this ferry too many time to count. the fun quickly goes away. 😁 Personally, I preferred the previous generation the Caribou and Smallwood.
I have not been on the day time run but have done the one that is overnight and the first time I got one of the cabins, it had a window and tv but because of weather tv did not work because no satellite signal or something, also when I used the toilet, the first time, it actually kinda startled me in a big way because it had a loud whooshing sound.
It sounds weird when you use the abbreviation of Company in Hudson Bay Company, not sure what's left of the Hudson Bay company, it was for years, well after its fur trading days, one of Canada's retail store, pretty well all the smaller stores closed up, and just the larger stores in the big cities remained.
I recently went to NFLD and its beautiful! We went to argentia to see the old US naval base. I dont know if we were there the same time but as you guys said you were there mid-august thats about the time i was there to, we watched the fairy de-ppart and saw the Argentia oil rig in the building. We flew in to St Jhons int airport and stayed with friends that live in conception bay! Some places we went to was Manuels river, Us naval base, Dungeon provical park,Twillingate and wayyyy more. Me and my family might move out there in the nezt few years i always tell people how pretty and nice it is anyways i could go on and on about NFLD but i wont!
Great video, quick question though: how far in advance did you book the cabin? I did this same trip this past June and booked my ferry tickets in April but there weren't any cabins available. I tried different days but nothing was available. Speaking to the customer service representative, she said the cabin reservations book up 6 months in advance. I'm just wondering if I just had unlucky timing or not, thank you and great videos!
Heck yeah! We're planning on doing it again in a few years with Jenn and Elliot again and possibly some others. Throw in some vans and more moms for support! I don't think either of us have interest in doing it solo. It was all about having fun with friends through a challenge
Well there is always more to see in all the places we've been, but we have a few more Canadian Provinces and Territories to see (the central ones). Thanks!!
Do you have a link to this ferry? The only CAT ferry we know of runs from Maine to Nova Scotia. But we’d be interested in learning more, as we are writing Newfoundland guides currently.
I have not taken the ferry since 1997 on the way back we got a berth and held up the entire ferry cause we didn't hear any of the alarms total walk of shame to our car lol
Thanks. Interestingly, NEWFOUNDLAND *& Labrador ( since my History, Stamp( philately) Collecting ,& Hsitory days. Always , been on my list to see: May not make it., Anyways, great overviews.
Newfound is beautiful. Mom was born there spent the summers growing up down there. Marine Atlantic has always has a poor reputation, the cafeteria’s should never close and be open 24/7. Even if they have to through food out. Passengers pay the same rates no? Great vid. Thx.
Hi, I am planning a trip to Nava Scotia, how is the cell phone signal when you cross the border. Because I have to work remotely, so I need to know how strong the cell phone signal is. I am using ATT, thank you very much for sharing video and looking forward to hearing your response.
Hello! It depends what areas you are traveling to. We haven't spent a ton of time in Nova Scotia yet, but I'd imagine cell signal is great in the larger cities and most of the province. I would check with your cell provider if you have international coverage. We have an AT&T hotspot and it doesn't work at all, but it could be the plan it's on. Verizon works great, but we only get 2 gb of high speed data per day. Hope that helps and good luck!
Why wouldn't you shower at truck stops, other gyms, or community centres with pools? You should play that game on the way back! Did the ice cream open later in the trip?
Those are good options, but we try to shower for free as much as possible. So paying at truck stops, non Planet Fitness gyms, and community centers all have a fee. On the way back we’ll be in Planet Fitness country again so we’ll have lots of options there 😊
Hi... where is the 1st board located which is shown with in 1st second in the vedio... I have been to the province thorugh ferry and i have visted whole island from port aux baseques to st.jhons but never saw that big signature of province
Very Very thanks for the Info... i was there Just a week before you have travelled there which was on last week of july.. but i never visited the Visitor center... so i missed that Very very thanks for the info
Hope you got to Dildo..... yes, for those that don't know, it's a real place! The whale watching there was fantastic! Try to get a local with knowledge to take you out instead of the whale watching tours. Also, the Bell Island mine tour was pretty cool to do. If you missed these, a good reason to go back! Enjoyed your video as I've never taken the ferry. Thanks for this.

We just returned from Newfoundland. We spent 18 days and loved it. We listened to Alan Doyle books on the drive from Ohio to Nova Scotia.
We’ve loved every second of it here! I’ll check out those books thank you!
As someone who occasionally lives aboard research vessels, I loved seeing y’all’s excitement towards the ferry cabin room! Keep adventuring 🎉

When you first drove on the boat I wasn't expecting the boat to be that HUGE WOW! That is a boat was big!
Since nearly everything comes there by ship, it has to be large for the transport trucks.
It was much bigger than we were expecting also!

I'm so excited, planning this trip for next year.. I can feel your excitement 😊❤
Made your way to Newfoundland!!! I always enjoy the Canadian Ferries. Looking forward to your exploring!!!

There is a third ferry option to Newfoundland, it goes from Blanc Sablon Québec to St Barbe on the northern tip of the island. It’s just under 2 hours
That is true. We were referring to the two ferries that come from the mainland
With that ferry, you have the option for driving back to the rest of Canada through Labrador and Quebec. We did that in reverse 5 years ago in May. Your ferry ride looked like so much fun…your enthusiasm towards everything makes me so happy!❤️❤️❤️
We had a similar feel on a smallish cruise ship… unfortunately we felt that way for days afterwards! Great video
Looks like an amazing trip
I took the same trip in 2022 August and loved Newfoundland. I did both ferry trips. I live on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada and drove across my country. I loved Newfoundland. You did a good job on the video but you should have spent more time hanging OUT of your cabin. Meeting people. Good job.
Thanks for watching!
Great Video as always guys loved it
Memories of my wife and I doing the same thing a couple years ago. Hopefully you aren’t too late for the tourist shops to close for the season. When we went in October 2021, the Puffins had already gone to sea and the Moose seemed to be hiding from hunters. Did see Elk though in Gros Morne.
I always take some gravol before I get on the ferry. Takes away the sea sickness. The rocking and rolling doesn’t bother you
Good to know! Thanks!
Yes we are. We just watched it on Apple+ the other night! It’s a fantastic story and show that shows how awesome people and communities can be!
Oh that would be quite the experience!
It was a very interesting game! Fun way to learn more place names.
Leading Tickles does look nice! We have been blown away by Newfoundland!
Great video guys it looks so nice 😊
Great video--congrats!
Rule number one, never let your dog go into the ocean, one mouthful of water and it’s going to be a bad day. We did Fogo Island camping last year and it was wonderful. Great video.
Yeah we learned that the hard way…😅
OK this was great, but I think it is time we started seeing a Kona cam. We need to see what Kona is up on each adventure (like riding the ferry in the van).
We have been checking outt going to NFL! A pretty cool trip to start your experience.
We spent 5 weeks in NL this summer and enjoyed every minute! We’d love to go back for longer. Enjoy!
We've loved every minute of it here! It's now one of our favorite places in North America!
Adam and Kathryn you're going back to Nova Scotia later in the fall? Could the Celtic Colours festival be in your future? If so, I'm so jealous and excited to see that episode!!! That festival is a bucket list thing of mine.
It will be going on while we're there! I don't know if we'll go to any of it, but we do plan on going to a Cèilidh!
Just finished a 16 day Newfoundland trip. Almost $900 for a round trip counterclockwise. 16.5 hours there and 8 back . Dropped the ball and turned down a cabin for the 16.5 to get there.
Beautiful coast! Glad you guys got to shower finally 😅😅
Thank you and thanks for watching!
beautiful photography
I heard my home town called a lot of things over the years but never a "magical place" lol.. Happy you enjoyed Port aux Basques though.
I've actually just moved here permanently a month ago. Good video.
Awesomeness
I recommend a cruise if you pick the right itinerary. Ferries are cool but not the same as a cruise ship
We are excited to do a cruise one day
Did you wave to France when you sailed near the islands os St Pierre and Miqulon.
They do go quickly!
We booked in January and we traveled in August...so 7 months in advance!
Hopefully you have better luck next time!
Thanks for the response, I appreciate it! Lesson learned for sure!@@AdventuresofAplusK
Going back to RAGBRAI; knowing each other and knowing what you now know about it. Would either of you attempt it again either together or solo?
Heck yeah! We're planning on doing it again in a few years with Jenn and Elliot again and possibly some others. Throw in some vans and more moms for support! I don't think either of us have interest in doing it solo. It was all about having fun with friends through a challenge
Sooo. I have to wake up next week to see what you explored tomorrow...
Haha it takes many hours to create, edit and post these videos 😅 thanks for watching!
Looks Amazing there, How much more of North America do you have to see
Well there is always more to see in all the places we've been, but we have a few more Canadian Provinces and Territories to see (the central ones).
Thanks!!
They have a faster ferry on now. From north Sydney, called the cat that will do it in 2 hours
Do you have a link to this ferry? The only CAT ferry we know of runs from Maine to Nova Scotia. But we’d be interested in learning more, as we are writing Newfoundland guides currently.
Quite a ship! I can see why you got the cabin but, call me cheap, I’d sit in the chairs for 7 hours 😆
Hahah if we weren’t filming it we would have 😂 and don’t worry we will be on the way back!
You didn't drive the Cabot Trail? Maybe I missed that. NFLD is AMAZING!
That's what we're doing next after Newfoundland! We wanted to hopefully catch it for the fall colors!
Gander took transatlantic flights during 9/11. Never forget. I hear fishing is big up their.
Yeah it’s a really great story! We watched the show “Come From Away” last week and it’s an awesome show!
Anyone have an opinion on taking the ferry to Argentia vs Port Aux Basques?
I have not taken the ferry since 1997 on the way back we got a berth and held up the entire ferry cause we didn't hear any of the alarms total walk of shame to our car lol
Oh no! 😂😂
Make sure you book EARLY for a cabin. And if not that, get reserved seats...
Great vid. Thx.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
My home province. Enjoy /
Hello! It is at the Visitor Welcome Center just outside Port aux Basques.
maps.app.goo.gl/yruKHco6KZYyzgoo9
Maybe it's new!
Very Very thanks for the Info... i was there Just a week before you have travelled there which was on last week of july.. but i never visited the Visitor center... so i missed that
Very very thanks for the info
So far it looks a lot like Norway to me.
Yes we did visit Dildo, but we didn't film our time there. It was a nice little town!
