I'm incredibly new to plants (but obsessed) and am already seeing them come down. It's soooo expensive in New Zealand for everything due to our strict import laws (native species and fauna needing protecting, who needs ferns and kiwi anyway :P ) like a variegated monstera will easily go for more than 1k here and I have a good friend in Germany who pays a fraction of the prices we pay here. It sucks so much but I'm definitely happy about them coming down. I saw a 3 leaf melanochrysum for $140 yesterday and it would have been over $200 just a month ago even.
I got into houseplants after moving from Florida to a cold, Alpine country 15 years ago. It was the only way to stay sane during the long, dark winters. I always preferred variegated plants since they brought extra color into my home. And starting out, crotons were my plant of choice, since they were so quintessentially Florida. Since they're so hard to grow indoors here, that started all the research and plant nerdom. It's been weird watching this pandemic-era boom, which has been driven by similar reasons to what got me started. It's especially weird to see which plants become huge and which get slept on. But I have to admit, it's made uncommon plants more accessible. They were definitely cheaper before, but you might have had to wait years to stumble across one in a local shop. I agree I don't understand how anyone devalues their collection just because plant prices do fluctuate up and down 🤷♀️ I love all of my babies and it's so rewarding watching new leaves and growth emerging 😍🥰
I got started in the hobby last year during the pandemonium and I've been so excited to see prices come down on some things I want (treubiis are affordable now?), even though I feel for small businesses that opened up during the craze. Taking care of plants has added so much to my home and day.
I totally understand! Being a younger plant parent, I feel like another big thing that got people into plants was the “ redoing your room indie style “ trend. All teenagers wanted at one point this year was an indie room with lots of plants.
I feel like the “P” word or panoramic 😂 had a part to play as well. I’ve been noticing now that people are getting out of the house more, people aren’t as interested in their plants. I see a lot of people “downsizing” their plant collection. Score for us who love them still!!!!
I have a plant mentor that's been in the community for 10+ years who can't believe how high the prices have gotten. Her and I were online shopping when she got so pissed off on the Gabby price. She got hers for $30! But it reverted back to a Brazil!! It's starting to turn back but that's how unstable it was at first.
I got my cream splash as a surprise bonus in my Brasil. One day I was watering my Brasil and I noticed some different leaves just hanging out. I separated them and propagated them and now I have a little cream splash plant. 😂 never knew back then what it would have turned into and that it would be a sought after plant, but I loved it then, and love it just as much, if not more, now.
🎯Target used to have an outdoor garden section where they always carried live plants like over a decade ago but of course not many people went to Target to shop landscape plants let alone house plants back then but it’s nice to see that they are bringing some back in stock 😉.
The Monstera Albo-Variegata (which is the one that I want) in my country a couple of months ago was around 250€ if not more and now I have seen around 60€. I'm going to wait one more month, maybe 2 months to see if the price drops a bit more. I also want a Thai Constelation but I think that one is going to take more than 2 months for the prices to drop, but let's see.
I think another thing that happened was people saw how profitable plants were so they decided to get some to sell later on. But as soon as they got big enough to chop and prop, prices had already dropped and they aren't "profitable" anymore. Especially during covid, people were looking for ways to make a quick buck or starting businesses.
You’ve been pretty on the money regarding plant trends in the past, but the Cream Splash came as a surprise to me personally. To anyone who might be looking for these, they are not and should not be expensive! Gabby is another story bc it’s a cultivar sold only by Gabriella Plants. My cream splash grows so fast that I have to cut it frequently in order for it to not strangle itself with new growth. The only “rare” thing about it is distinguishing it from a Silver Stripe, and even then it’s not 100% if they’re the same cultivar with different levels of variegation or not.
I like finding rare(ish) plants for cheap. I got a HUGE Hoya linearis for like $40 and then free because the account was hacked and everyone got refunded (it was weird). My favorite plant is the silver dollar jade. I know it doesn't look particularly special to most but I absolutely adore it in every way. My spouse got it for me in one gallon pots at $14 each, buying out the store. I don't think we should be paying so much. I get a lot of plants for free because propagation is easy. Saw a birkin for $12 or something at Walmart. I honestly don't find them attractive so like never bothered me. I grew a monsteras from a little baby, got one for $15, and got a MASSIVE 30+ year old monstera with 3' leaves for free as a gift from family. I am very good with plants. My first job was at a nursery and my mom was a florist. I always buy babies because I have patience! I don't need instant gratification but if there's a crazy deal on an adult I'm not stupid.
Theory #4: plants are self propagating so for every person who paid $XXX for a pink princess, then created 10+ plants for sale, we see exponential availability of these plants. We just went though a pandemonium where we alllll learned what R0 values are. So for every rare plant that moved into the hands of a person, how many other ppl also received a plant from that person? And how many did they then distribute? But Monstera obliqua…that plant produces runners like crazy, so…why was it ever valued at $1000+? Anyways, good video. If anyone is surprised by this “pop”, ask yourself why carrots cost you less than 20¢, but a houseplant costs you over $100. Same process except you don’t eat houseplants…they just sit there and get bigger, producing more and more supply. 🥳
I bought an expensive plant and propagated it to ten plants. Now the plant is worth half what I paid for it. I will make my money back and have left over plants for trade and hybridizing. I've seen nice baskets of cebu blue at hardware stores inexpensive but I think demanding plants won't be chosen to grow for the public and remain expensive.
Price in Canada are coming down too, especially for some Philodendrons. For me, I choose plants because I want to care for them, watch them grow, and share them with friends and family, not because i think I'll make a buck.
I took a break from plants this past year for multiple reasons but largely because plants became SO EXPENSIVE!! I’m glad plant prices are going down, I’m buying up all the hoyas 😆🎉
Nice video, I really enjoyed it! I have to admit that I joined the plant community due to too much time at home during the pandemic. I still love all of them, but I am running out of space now. :‘D
Im glad they are dropping lol bc i want more of the rare ones. I've bcome addicted to anything albo. Well almost. Ur a great lady!! i binge watch u alot lol. ur cool and i love ur personality. Im going to try to find ur shop.
I'm one of those people that have liked plants since before they were trendy. It's been quite a crazy experience to see plants that used to be so common become holy grails. The only plants I was convinced to buy because of clout was my plain green monstera deliciosa and my fiddle leaf fig. I love my monstera. The FLF has become my evil step-child. Lol
I know she can be polarizing, but kaylee Ellen has referenced to people holding plant stock to continue to keep prices high. The way she spoke of it, I got the impression that she had witnessed that practice.
I am going through this right now. I have a whole bunch of plants. Now I’m back to working but I still take care of them all the time. Plus I’m making some humidity boxes so my plants that need that will no okay while I’m not home since I work
Heck yeah I remember big box store lines, I stood in one HD line right when stay at home first started for 2.5h 🙄 But basically the plant market (production, supply/demand-wise) is the opposite of gasoline. They decreased oil production last year cuz no one was going anywhere and now we’re paying the price for a lack of supply by high a$$ ⛽️ prices 🙄 I’m just recently seeing scores of pothos and other intro plants in stores again and it has def occurred to me that eventually they’re gonna have to sale/clearance some cuz there’s soooo many where there were none a year ago, after the initial run on plants and home improvement things. I searched all year for a neon heart leaf philodendron and literally just happened upon one today
I think obliqua is a different case - it caught hype before the pandemic and dropped in the whole duration of the pandemic because of runners and it’s easy propagation
I’ve been an avid plant collector for over 5 years and I’m glad prices are dropping and even tho I spend hundreds of dollars on certain plants, I have no regrets lol but I hope one day prices would go a little up js
Hoping price keep coming down so us on the poor side of income can afford more then jyst a few comman or succ's and cacti. I really don't have the strong light some succ's need to not stretch. And can't afford the lights to kerp them happy. But hoyseplants are eadier to keep happy
I think another reason that plant prices “going down” is due to “new plants” coming into the market. For example that new monstera it was just popularized and goes for $5k. In addition, I believe that plant prices only SEEM to be going down due to popularized price shaming. Kaylee Ellen talked about it in her new video how (I believe) she sold a variegated gloriosum off grid due to the price it costed and the price shaming that comes along with paying that price. Idk definitely interesting though.
A lot of new plant businesses in my area popped up in the last few months. I’m worried about the community’s ability to sustain all of them. I can’t imagine starting that business now!
A plant shop started during the pandemic in my town, and they were able to sustain, so now that people are out i think they could be fine if theyre in a good location and get good plants!
I meant to comment on the thing about people suggesting there should be an agreement to but I didn't have time, there's a really really fundamentally important issue - the term "gate keeping" is kind to the point of euphemistic - a better term is "price fixing" which is fundamentally against all the principles which keep democracy and ultimately our freedom safe - it is how multi nationals take control of markets, it is a mafia mentality, it is necessarily illegal. I'm speechless that there are people so cosetted that they do not realise how dangerous that notion is! I hope those people get told in their faffy "oh we love the special plants" la la land just what the serious implications that their suggestions involve.
Yup, 4 weeks after going back to work I found my first ever spider mites on my Ctenanthe. Not a coincidence, I’m doing watering checks like half as often as I used to
actually you are missing the main factor and that is that there are more exporters/sellers from overseas like indonesia due to an initial increased demand of plants. ergo at some point 'production' exceeds demand. in addition, we reached by now a saturation of the market since we are dealing with plants, the life span of a product is too high and additionally by obtaining one product you can reproduce that product infinite times and sell it by yourself which leads again to an increase of suppliers and more saturation, if that is even possible. Luckily, there are 1000.. of plant species, such that a saturation should be by theory avoidable. but (and now comes your point) due to covid emerged demand in plants we are dealing with a temporary demand - a trend.
I think plants are a good thing for some 'beer money,' so to speak, but I don't think it makes sense to go into as a way to make your living unless you really know what you're doing regarding costs and market trends. A bunch of small plant shops have opened up in my city. There's no way they're getting the same wholesale rate as the big box stores, and their plants aren't really any different. I hope I'm wrong but I feel like a lot of them will go out of business.
KINDA SIDE TANGENT I had a huge calling to get into plants recently, my depression got really bad and I’ve fallen in love. I had a really sick succulent and I brought it back to life. It made me feel really good and I felt like it was possible to get better. I had no idea that when a new leaf comes on our plants that we get a dopamine boost! I completely agree with you tho.
I mean I guess but like you said, the highly sought after plants/expensive plants just change. I think its about knowing the market. We live in the richest country in the world. People have money here and although most folks had a ton of extra time to start a new hobby, I highly doubt they will all of sudden just let all their expensive plants die/sell them all.
I see the same thing in crypto currencies, people accidentally buy high then freak out and sell them all low because they think it will get lower. But ofc it goes back up. I'm not sure with plants, because new plants can be produced like printing more money, which makes the money less valuable. If someone used a credit card or overdraft to buy plants with the justification that in a few months they'll get the money back, they could be in trouble. As an investment, plants are very high risk. Many houseplant boutiques have appeared in the last year, just on my partners street 4 houseplant boutiques have appeared, its not even a big street. Many people get into debt to start a business and most don't make any profit in the first year. So I don't judge anyone that is upset about the prices falling, however, I would assume investors knew it was high risk.
Yay im happy about that I need more I only have 160 house plants lol when I first got my string of plants every one said they killed their sting of Pearl's . But iv had no problem ...

@@JessBrookeAllen exactly I got into plants at the end of my 1st pregnancy right at the beginning of covid so everything was massively expensive so I stuck to common plants.
Is it just me or at this point of time plant prices are only dropping in the USA. Although give it some time and plant prices will (hopefully) start dropping in other countries. example Ashley said you
They already started dropping in Europe before they did in the US. While I was watching people talk about $150-$200 plants on youtube in spring, I was already buying them for 10-20 euros. There are a lot of Dutch growers that started mass producing and they have the capacity to meet demand like many others don't. So most of the cheaper plants are originating from there and being distributed in other countries.
I love this but obliqua is still extremely rare the “price drop,” and “oversupply,” are all fakes. Even in the wild they’re rare and they’ve only been researched 17 times to be identified over the years.
This is why I haven't bought a lot of my wishlist plants. I had been wanting a Philodendron Birkin for yearssssss but they were always so pricey and hard to find. I now have a gorgeous one that I got from home depot for $9.99 lolll
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'm kinda tired of all the brand new plant parents joining all the Facebook groups just to ask easily googleable questions. Also typically being the ones to overpay for plants because they want it and don't know the common prices. Obviously not anyones fault im just excited for the bubble to burst
This is actually a popular opinion. I get people who dm me questions they could easily google or do research on as well in under 5 minutes. However i love all the new people 👉🏻👈🏻 but dont feel bad about ur opinion

I got started in the hobby last year during the pandemonium and I've been so excited to see prices come down on some things I want (treubiis are affordable now?), even though I feel for small businesses that opened up during the craze. Taking care of plants has added so much to my home and day.
In the 70s..there was a decor craze to have plants in our homes but there was no internet trends on certian plants.
Thats completely true! I wonder if this is the first big boom since the internet?
This was so good to know!! I’m more of an outdoor plant parent, but I’m trying to get into houseplants. I guess now is the time.
Score for us who love them still!!!!
i loved your cute little thesis, nick alexander is amazing....best video of yours
Same thing happened with new pets. I saw so many people putting their puppy on craigslist because they are going back to work.
You are just the sweetest Lady .
How caring you are for other ppl.
I love your mindset, thinking and soul.
Feel hugged.😊😇
Greetings from Germany
Wow thank you 😭
I live in Germany and there are now full Monstera Albo plants in Hagebaumarkt (a big box store from here) for 99.95euros. Crazy!
Wait what, since when?
@@MiningStar I saw them last week at my local Hagebaumarkt. A bunch o them, they also had syngonium albo for 79,95 a full plant.
@@albawaterhouse wtf, ab zu Hagebaumarkt!!! 😂😍
Ya i think so too. theres nothing wrong with selling to make some money back, but i can see why that might make people kinda sad
Love you and Salem and your tuning fork. I got a WPP recently from a friend on a payment plan it is little and perfect.
Im glad they are dropping lol bc i want more of the rare ones. I've bcome addicted to anything albo. Well almost. Ur a great lady!! i binge watch u alot lol. ur cool and i love ur personality. Im going to try to find ur shop.
Costa Farms are killing the plant business. They are so huge and they don't rip off the customers. Love them!
Video link? :))
I am going through this right now. I have a whole bunch of plants. Now I’m back to working but I still take care of them all the time. Plus I’m making some humidity boxes so my plants that need that will no okay while I’m not home since I work
nse has PPP and BMF like right now thats crazy to me I remember when plants would sell out within minutes.
Heck yeah I remember big box store lines, I stood in one HD line right when stay at home first started for 2.5h 🙄
But basically the plant market (production, supply/demand-wise) is the opposite of gasoline. They decreased oil production last year cuz no one was going anywhere and now we’re paying the price for a lack of supply by high a$$ ⛽️ prices 🙄
I’m just recently seeing scores of pothos and other intro plants in stores again and it has def occurred to me that eventually they’re gonna have to sale/clearance some cuz there’s soooo many where there were none a year ago, after the initial run on plants and home improvement things.
I searched all year for a neon heart leaf philodendron and literally just happened upon one today
I saw a variegated strelitzia recently and it was beautiful, but expensive. Wondering if it will get populair (so more expensive)
These are one of my favorites 😍
True ✌ I've got monstera dubia and siltepecana and philodendron white and pink princess for 75 pounds just last week 💚💚💚
Do u have to join to see ur plants for sale or is that a live only thing?
Yeah, thats why prices are hard bc you dont usually ever even get to see those prices for the big ticket plants
Not a coincidence, I’m doing watering checks like half as often as I used to
Young lady you are very knowledgeable. ❤❤❤
This is so on point!💯💯💯🪴hi! Im new subscriber🙋🏽♀️🪴loving your channel!
I have autism and I'm home all day and my autism consultant actually suggested I get into plants too for the reasons you mentioned :D
It helps a lot of us tremendously.
Ma’am are you holding a tuning fork lol
Yes maam its for hybridizing de plont
actually you are missing the main factor and that is that there are more exporters/sellers from overseas like indonesia due to an initial increased demand of plants. ergo at some point 'production' exceeds demand.
in addition, we reached by now a saturation of the market since we are dealing with plants, the life span of a product is too high and additionally by obtaining one product you can reproduce that product infinite times and sell it by yourself which leads again to an increase of suppliers and more saturation, if that is even possible.
Luckily, there are 1000.. of plant species, such that a saturation should be by theory avoidable. but (and now comes your point) due to covid emerged demand in plants we are dealing with a temporary demand - a trend.
Nick is the best!
This is a huge reason that I got into plants also. I hope you continue to find comfort and peace here ❤️
@@hollypuckett3931 🥺 thank you 💕
I mean I guess but like you said, the highly sought after plants/expensive plants just change. I think its about knowing the market. We live in the richest country in the world. People have money here and although most folks had a ton of extra time to start a new hobby, I highly doubt they will all of sudden just let all their expensive plants die/sell them all.
What about this theory: It could be that these plant parents don’t have enough space
I am glad that the prices of plants are coming down
I'm glad that we're getting some new trendy plants bc im tired of seeing the same 5 plants all over insta
Agreeeed
lol im not sure if you meant to or not but i laughed when you said Havai'i cause I'm thinking of Randy Marsh in South Park XD
I refuse to spend more than 200 on a plant. If it’s out of budget, I’ll wait a couple years
I see the same thing in crypto currencies, people accidentally buy high then freak out and sell them all low because they think it will get lower.
Only...160...lol that is so many...im only at 47ish..lol
Same! Mine is super happy and I keep it in a pot with no drainage even. 😝
@@anthonylawson518 Good thing prices are coming down so you can keep building your collection 😂
I have about 187 i think right now
@@PlantingAshley you make it look easy...but I also understand we only see a small portion of how you handle it! I would love to see an orchid video! I only have 2 but they are such neat plants!
I noticed today that mint adansonii are in the low hundreds now.
I noticed this as well
@@PlantingAshley I just seen one for 200 plus shipping this morning ahahahaha
Yeah there was one for 250 shipped in tropical and rare plants bst
I saw a gloriosum for 50 dollars, when I fist joined the community in 2020 you could not get it for that price.
cant wait for cheap gloriousums! hope it happens soon!
🙏
Im ready for it to be 50dollars for a small/medium plant in the stores. or a cutting at that price ^^
I remember the felix been super cheap last year! But i think is super pretty 😍
We 💘 Nick Alexander too!
I'm excited that they're dropping because I have baby #2 otw so I no longer have tons of money to spend lol
This happened to me last year. And now I have a 3 month old and still have no money. 🤣
@@JessBrookeAllen exactly I got into plants at the end of my 1st pregnancy right at the beginning of covid so everything was massively expensive so I stuck to common plants.
It took me too long to realize you meant a human baby and not a baby plant ☠️
@@PlantingAshley lol oops should have clarified. I've got like 100 plant babies. Just need some less common ones. "Rarest" I have is a PPP cutting.
@@aniliname thanks for your perspective in Europe. I live in Africa, so hopefully prices will start to drop soon here. Stay safe 🤗
@@shmuelleib2537 Fingers crossed! Stay safe!
It could just be usa! The prices got so big here it was bound to happen
@@PlantingAshley That is probably true, but I hope the prices will start to go down in South Africa(where I live). Stay safe 🤗
Are you waving around a tuning fork? Lmao
And you answered and demonstrated. NICE lmao
HAHA 🤣
I kinda feel like plants should be priced by size not by how "rare". I think that makes plants accessible.
also how easily they propagate
I’m so glad I controlled myself & waited for this to happen 🙃
I love this but obliqua is still extremely rare the “price drop,” and “oversupply,” are all fakes. Even in the wild they’re rare and they’ve only been researched 17 times to be identified over the years.
Panaromic is hilarious. But it's actually POE-thawss (rhymes with boss). Check the dictionary. Please help me start the revolution.
This is why I haven't bought a lot of my wishlist plants. I had been wanting a Philodendron Birkin for yearssssss but they were always so pricey and hard to find. I now have a gorgeous one that I got from home depot for $9.99 lolll
I remember the Lowes and HD lines duuuude
Also I think yellow and sport variegation is coming in more too
I totally agree, yellow is the new white hahaha
I live in Canada and in my area Raven ZZ’s were going for $120… insane
Woah for real
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'm kinda tired of all the brand new plant parents joining all the Facebook groups just to ask easily googleable questions. Also typically being the ones to overpay for plants because they want it and don't know the common prices. Obviously not anyones fault im just excited for the bubble to burst
This is actually a popular opinion. I get people who dm me questions they could easily google or do research on as well in under 5 minutes. However i love all the new people 👉🏻👈🏻 but dont feel bad about ur opinion
4:52 “people get sad during a panoramic” ??? 🤔
