The regulator just controls the rate that steam is admitted into the cylinders. The regulator handle is typically affixed to a sort of valve in the steam dome. The reverser attaches to the valve gear, providing control over direction of travel. The reverser can also control the cutoff, which is basically how much of the length of the piston stroke is steam admitted into the cylinders. That's probably as clear as mud, so I'll try to clarify. Take a piston going from one end of the cylinder to the other. That's a stroke. If you want to use steam more efficiently, you can change how much of that stroke has steam coming from the dome to the cylinder. If your cutoff is 100%, you have steam flowing into the cylinder throughout the whole stroke, kind of like having high power. If your cutoff is at 50%, you have steam flowing into the cylinder during only 50 percent of the stroke. This allows the steam admitted into the cylinder during the first half of the stroke to expand and do the rest of the work in finishing the stroke, thus using steam more efficiently.
That makes sense but as far as I can tell that kind of detail isn't modelled in game, at least not yet. Backing off on the reverser only makes me lose power and go slower.

Looks interesting. Liked how the car suspension was affected by load weight. Multiplayer though? I can just imagine trolls flipping switches wrong and trying to block tracks.
This looks very simulair to Derail valley (overhauled) to me except for the building tracks part. I am not sure if you have played that, either before or after overhauled. I'll see how development goes and maybe pick it up in the future. This is fun content so i am keen to see more of this.
Thanks for uploading both videos! I learned how to play by them as there’s no tutorial yet! I’ve played all day yesterday and judt started today again!
My only problem with the physics is how much the wheels bob back and forth, although I would have no idea how to make wheels act how they would in real life with their conical shape lmao.
this game looks completely different with the way you play it compared to other youtubers who don't know what a generator or compressor does (though in the context of trains i wasn't sure what to think either)
it's kinda naff that they abandoned the single player version to make a multiplayer version and still have the nerve to call it early access, reminds me of the mud runner vs spintires debacle.
Constant grade means the grade will be constant for each piece of the spline you lay whereas variable each little piece can be individually adjusted. It's kind of hard to explain. Let's say you lay ground work in 5 pieces and are now ready to finalize by right clicking. If you're in constant grade mode when you adjust the grade all 5 pieces will adjust to be a constant grade from start to finish. If you were in variable mode only the last piece of the 5 would change in grade as you adjust. I hope that makes sense.
I have rewatched your video tutorials the most as you seem more versed in the game than some others. I have noticed the height of your track bed to the sawmill. As high as I had but thought was TOO HIGH. Having a tough time operating the loco. Always seems to run out of wood. Is there a way to refill the firewood in the cab or is gone when used? Thanks for you very informative videos.
You can build a firewood depot (G menu->facilities) to fill your locomotives. I think it starts with some firewood and you can deliver any kind of wood to it to have it make more
I have a dumb question - how do I load a saved game - it only gives me an opportunity to make a hosted game (in the cloud) or join someone' game. How do I save and then later reload my saved game - with just me in it?
You will have to host a game with your most recent save, and if you would prefer it to be just you then set the max players to 1. (The name and password don't matter btw, because they don't even save)
To add to what The Gamer Pickle said, when you save there are 10 slots. When you start your game pick the one you want, it defaults to slot 1 and use < > buttons to pick
I got it and like it despite some bugs. Could you do a tutorial on how to get to the lumber camp/sawmill 🤔 that is my biggest gripe is figuring that out as a noob!
I just laid track out to about the halfway point between the logging camp and sawmill then laid track from the logging camp to the sawmill and tied into the track coming from the freight house. It takes some trial and error and the map view can give you an idea of where you are and what direction you're facing. Good luck!
@@KerboOnYT Ah ok that helps. Yeah, trial and error for sure! I do hope the developers add the ability to say survey a route? I need to work on messing around more I guess 😉

Ah, they probably did it for simplicity. Nevertheless, the game seemed interesting enough for me to acquire

once this is developed a bit more this would be great with VR support

It's on the roadmap

I can put firewood in the loco firebox only if I go INSIDE right up close using w and ctrl. Why they call me Baldy.
On the Discord that issue is being tracked and worked on "Fuel does not seem to hit the firebox hitbox for some players"
slightly to far off the loading station the track is

Since firewood is free right now I haven't checked. I just grab it and go
