I design and build wind turbines as a hobby. Been at it for over 50 years. I make my own generators / alternators and doing that, I can make alternating current or direct current WITHOUT electronics. Also, I can adjust the cut-in speed merely by how far I place the magnets from the axis of rotation. My VAWTs have only one moving part.
Thank you so much for the help. I'll use my treadmill motor to charge mine and my mom's devices and then turn my alternator in my car into a generator to possibly power a few things in my house. Again thank you so much for giving me the knowledge I needed to start my project in getting power back into my house.
Good video thanks for it. Literally an hour ago I discovered people are using these motors in alternative ways for generating electricity for storage. I went down a rabbit hole on solar power a couple months ago starting with Will Prowse videos then covering the mass plethora of solar videos on this platform. Aaaand now all of a sudden I'm waiting for a couple more components and I'll be assembling my first solar system around an LV2424 with a 24v 280ah 8s home assembled lifepo4. I'm really interested to see what can be done with these motors. Stay frosty 👌
Yeah we all have our headed down the rabbit whole time with that. Sounds like you're building up a good system. I'm going to get this generator done I'll do a video. Also going to be adding an off-grid system to the tiny home we're building. And a lot more. Currently we have some videos out about an easy grid tied system we're running. About as simple as it gets. Thanks for watching and commenting
I grab up any free treadmill I can get hands on in my area. I daily a pickup so I'm always prepared. I've used treadmill motors to make 2x72 belt grinders. The one in my shop now, uses the motor, controller, bearings, and some of the frame to make it. I've been wanting to try my hand at generating for a while.
I'm the same way I'll be driving down the road sitting that hit the brakes and turn around and pick up whatever I can find when it comes to treadmill motors
Definitely be fun . Also thought about taking a weed eater motor and hooking to one. This would allow for very small easily transported. Quick way to top up the batteries if you were in a camper or doing van life. One of these would also fit well in a vehicle with the air conditioning pump removed just tied into the serpentine belt.
played with these a few times , bench test always look good , but never found a good way to gear it up , there are FB groups for just this type of thing but have never seen a partical generator with these , will be interested to see what you come up with. will follow along.
Nice video… i beg to differ on the reliability of some of these motors. I’ve been selling/refurbishing fitness equip for 15 years. Most Nordictrack, Proform, and Horizon treadmills have garbage motors in them. Unless it says 4hp(WAY overrated)or more on the label, done waste your time. Just like that 2.8hp motor you have, its junk and came out of one of those treadmills. The best, most efficient way to spin these things is by way of Hyroelectric generation. This method is so much better than any other power generation method, it makes you wonder who’s in charge of influencing the govt restrictions that prevent hydroelectric power on anything other than small scale.
I don't know that I would call them junk. The no name Chinese fitness equipment is much worse have to replace him plenty of these motors in my dad's gym I have seen that there is higher quality but those are generally not home use ones you're going to find out along the road. That's sad hydroelectric is frowned upon because people tend to want to use them in rivers and other waterways and then things get tangled in them or they do them wrong. I don't figure this motors will last forever but free power generation with a broke down mower or turning one into a geared wind turbine is about all I have available to me considering I live on one of the highest peaks in Southeast Ohio lol . Unfortunately water doesn't flow uphill lol . Sad truth is with today's pricing none of these motors are really that useful compared to just buying more solar. I do appreciate your feedback and you're taking the time to comment and I do agree that these are lower quality motors. Thank you for sharing your insight
I just used a 24v drill to turn one I got. It stopped producing at 34v at a certain rpm. I realize now that it was turning against the way it was designed to turn when powered, due to the fact it was being driven on the screw that held the pulley on. I didn't try the other way to see a difference, yet. I have so many questions. 1. Why did it peter out at 34.4v? 2. Is it regulated inside? 3. Did I make over unity using 24v to make 34v? My suggestion, very new to this, take the stupid pulley off. Its keyed so it will accept other pulleys or gears, chain driven etc. Ok, back to experimenting. First how to modify or fashion a grab point for the drill without breaking the little screw that goes into the motor shaft.
I would guess the 34.4 volts is as high as it goes but it is possible that the amps increase after that. It would not surprise me to see a regulator in there.
@thefrugalhomestead7873 I tried both directions and its 37v with drill turning clockwise. Going to put a 40v to 24v converter between the motor and drill, and a dpdt switch between the drill battery and drill. Thats my next project. The idea is spin it up under drill power and flip the switch so the motor powers the drill with battery out of the loop.
I think there's lots of options for these motors The truth is some of them are brushed so outdoor usage may not be long-term. That said we're going to have a heck of a lot of fun doing things with them
I have a running tread mill, nothing wrong with it, but i want to make a generator out of it, the speed control works just fine, it's been sitting in my garage for over 15 years. Any ideas peeps?
I guess it depends on what you want to run with it. Simply building a platform adding a gas-powered motor and a belt drive would make a generator for 12 volt or whatever voltage the treadmill motor is. Obviously you'd need to convert that to whatever you wanted to use it for.
with 3d printing and all that, getting custom gear boxes with good ratios for the work you want has never been easier. Completely takes the high cut-in speed out of the equation.
That's kind of true you can't just take an alternator it won't produce power unless it senses power. That said I'd never destroy batteries by using a PWM controller.
With as cheap as they are I don't know why you would buy brushes just buy another motor. But most times you can go to an alternator repair shop and they can look up the numbers and order parts
So just out of curiosity, why did you decide to use treadmill motors instead of car alternators, cause you can make a generator using a lawnmower and a car alternator
You have to alter the car alternator for that to work. In other words you have to have power going to the unit aka alternator to make it work. So in that situation you would have to have a separate battery to make it work This is going to be going directly to a charge controller. A permanent magnet motor does not require external power to work.
Hi. New subscriber. I found you through your ( $25 Rural internet solution - Portable internet solution VIDEO ) Been doing research for a few years now on the van life. I Can tell you know what you're talking about, So high five to no b.s. I was curious to know if this would be a better option than a vehicle alternator? For charging a deep-cell battery? in your opinion. Thanks.
It depends on which type of battery you are using. Definitely more cost effective. I have lots of videos coming up the next few months that might be helpful to you on things like solar generator power banks. A camper build. Tread mill generator and more.
@@thefrugalhomestead7873 Thanks for the reply. Yeah i used to think deep-cell and marine were the same, and finding out that they're not. So what i'm thinking is basically lighting and diesel heater use. But having a diy dc generator for charging without having to start the van, as back up. I have the motor already and jack shaft kit. Just starting to get things for my bug out van. Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks again.
That actually would probably work really well at the moment I brought home an old power washer motor and the frame someone is taking the pump the hoses and all the other stuff off of it if I can get it running it'd be easy to hook the treadmill motor to the side. You're giving me all kinds of ideas though.
Do not forget that electric scooters ie: electric wheel chairs have two, I repeat two motors per scooter one per side...........not just one like a treed mill. Two for the price of one.....
I managed to have a hub washer machine motor run with 48 vdc at ove 5000 rpms and I was searching to see how a trade mill motor can produce to at this speed coz I am not sure but think it's well over unity if I can get over 90 vdc from the trade mill motor then I can look back and have the hub motor have power continuously through bdlc controller with high torque. What do you guys think?
Estes motores trabalham em rotação muito elevadas, nao sao eficientes para geração de energia! Tente utilizar os motores de hoverboard, encontra quase gratis e são excelentes para gerar energia em baixa rotação!

I were working on two tread mill motors for running in series or parallel to run to bus bar for an auxiliary with my drill as the power.
That's an excellent concept I wonder if an impact would do better.

Interesting! Wind turbine to a gear or belts to work with one of those. Sounds like a fun project. 👍😎

Thanks AJ More projects on these to come in the future

I got to go check out those groups.
Great video, I got an old treadmill motor that I use too..
Lots of uses for these I try to save every single one I can from the scrap yard
I like it. My kind of thing.
Agree this the fun stuff
I used a 4hp one as a bicycle generator... It kept me fit and powered my electronics when the winter was cloudy.
I'm guessing you had gearing to make it reasonable like a 10-speed
Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure. More to come on this topic after we finish a few other projects up
You can do over unity with trade mill motor by spinning it with 12v drill moto only.
👍
Heck yeah ,good video .
So show me how to run my house

I know that it's overkill but what about connecting the shaft to a 6ft flywheel to gearbox generator??? Be nice it's just a little thought
Actually that's A very interesting thought. Now you got my brain cranking. Lol

Any dc motor can be connected to an old pvm solar charger…to keep your off grid battery’s charged….
That's kind of true you can't just take an alternator it won't produce power unless it senses power. That said I'd never destroy batteries by using a PWM controller.
Where can I buy new brushes for a 3 hp treadmill no motor
With as cheap as they are I don't know why you would buy brushes just buy another motor. But most times you can go to an alternator repair shop and they can look up the numbers and order parts
I did this once with a motor from a vacuum cleaner.
Interesting I'll have to check that out

Use an old front tine rototiller with a side shaft belt drive.

I hooked one to a exercise bike tried to hook it to a power inverter got the green light but it cuts out still don't know how to utilize the power
Probably have to go to a battery in that situation. My guess is it has to be geared just right to use it

Why are college towns getting rid of treadmills?
Most college kids move every semester too at least every year. They tend to not want to bother to move the treadmills.
Hey where’s the sequel???
Working on it building a tiny house at the moment.
