so wonderful! for me, this recording is a contender for the definitive or at least the most fun performance, such as the way he switches to the g string at 8:37. i can barely stand the genius and wit, on so many levels, of this composition--beyond genius. i'm always greedy to hear as many interpretations as i can. what an experience it must be as a violinist to make it your own and commune (aka trade jokes and witticisms) with prokofiev like that. undoubtedly an amazing experience for flautists as well, but the colors and brilliance this piece, with all the register changes and other sparkling and surprising passages, that it brings out of a violin, it's just incredible.
I like what you say about this marvelous sonata, but I'm finding his interpretation a bit cold. I'll listen to the end, though, to see (hear?) if I am correct in that impression!
Oistrakh did the right thing to ask Prokofiev to compose a violin version of this sonata. I like the Oistrakh, Milstein, Kremer rendition, but this Kogan rendition tops all I have heard.
