This film has been produced to celebrate the centenary of James Fletcher-Watson, who died in 2004. It gives an insight into James and his life and includes interviews with his painting friends and family, along with early images of him and his work. It illustrates his love of sketching and painting outdoors, with previously unseen footage - a pencil sketch in the Cotswolds, a painting of Cley Mill in Norfolk and a tree study from the Lake District. This is a fascinating look at the life of a great painter who believed passionately in passing on the pure watercolour tradition.

Ultimate Staging I love his work. I love the way he mixed colours and laid down washes. I am starting to paint again after 20 years and am struggling with the basics. Today I turned to two of his books for help. Intend to try and follow his instuctions

I taught myself to paint watercolour landscapes with James F-W's book "Watercolour Painting - Landscapes and Townscapes" which had hardly any colour photos in it, it was so long ago (1982). Watching this little video brought tears to my eyes, for the loss not only of James, who had a long and wonderful career and left us his splendid work to enjoy forever, but also for the lost England which he loved and preserved for posterity. There is nothing to equal a masterly pure watercolour in the traditional British School. Thank you Mr Fletcher-Watson.

Sentimos su falta señor James, pues su trabajo era de una belleza singular y extraordinaria. Su simplicidad estaba llena de talento y una visión perfecta de lo que realmente es la acuarela.

A true inspiration in water colour, his purist approach of retaining whites,no gouache or acrylic high lights with this guy.

What is "Pure" watercolour's? Can somebody please explain? Thank you!

Lock Down Society ‘pure’ I imagine means applying watercolours in a fresh, vibrant way which allows the light of the paper to glow through the pigment. The opposite to pure watercolour is ‘muddy’ watercolours where there has been too much colour mixing and the clarity of the ‘pure’ watercolour pigment has been lost and dulled. Hope this helps.
