  • If you’re looking for dumb action, then this is your movie. But if you’re looking for an intelligent movie that pays homage to the originals whilst also doing something interesting itself, then you're gonna be disappointed.

A few things I would like to say about this:
-first of all its not "Horrifyingly Bad" as I know many people enjoyed it by the dislike ratio I can see people agreed with me.
-I do agree that the character building was kinda bad as I didn't really have any connect to any characters besides rain and Andy.
-Bjorn also probably thought he killed the alien because he just stabbed it multiple times with the electric stick. He was probably in so much shock from being stabbed that he didn't move and then the acid killed him before he could.
    - Kay was desperately calling for help so he was trying to save her because she most likely would have died then if he didn't answer.
-Him saying Run outloud was pretty dumb
-Why would he need the flare before they are being chased?
-Also pretty stupid for rain to get mad when he can calculate it perfectly.
-Its his sister who was stuck behind the door he would do anything to save her so he was being emotional and not thinking logically.
-I agree that it was stupid that it landed in the hanger perfectly when it probably would have just crashed somewhere
-also agree that the walls should have melted
    -the line did feel forced
-I didn't particularly mind the new creature as it had me creeped out when I saw the thing for the first time
-I also wondered where it got all that mass because that should be physically impossible
-most stupid decisions were made under pressure and they weren't thinking straight
In conclusion, I don't think its nearly as bad as you say it is but that is your opinion. I had a good time watching it personally in theaters and while it does have its faults Its pretty good movie.

@@HKSpringDog I think Veter might have sociopathic traits or even just autism (not equating the two but being on the spectrum can make it harder to understand irrational, emotion based decision making). There are a lot of horror movies where character decisions are outright ridiculous (see: Prometheus biologist pokes alien snake). Romulus isn't really one of them, and when it is its not nearly as bad as he makes it out to be. Some of the points in this video are literally "Why would they risk their lives for their friends/family?".
Not everybody is as cold and calculating as a robot man. If you disliked the movie because of that, no offense but it might say more about you than the movie itself 😬

Probably the only truly stupid thing about the Alien films is the lack of even third grade science- in Alien, Prometheus and now Romulus, we have Xenomorphs growing from chestburster or huge adults in no time at all and WITHOUT EATING ANYTHING.
Where does the mass come from?!?
In Prometheus, we have Shaw's abortion grow into an absolutely huge squid monster after being locked inside a room without anything to eat or drink. Is it a paper thin balloon?
    SO dumb.
Also, Chris Carter called- he wants his stolen idea of the black goo back. It was much more effective on The X-Files.

I think the original concept of the Xeno is that we don't know its biology.
We don't know if it needs to feed or needs mass to grow, we don't know if it "respects" the laws of the universe as we know them. And i think this is the real terrifying thing: Something brutal that we don't understand. Remember the main thing: The Xeno is a weapon and as such, it may doesn't needs anything at all to pursuit its goal, just spread-hunt-kill routine.

As a die hard Aliens fan, there certainly are things I could be critical about….but overall I loved the film as it is for popcorn and Scifi horror immersive fun. Yeah….the growth rate is very unrealistic which detracts from the “suspension of disbelief” and there were forced Easter eggs, but overall I enjoyed it immensely. The character development wasn’t an issue for me as I’m simply watching as a witness to the story…no need to be too invested in the characters. I feel that aside from Ripley, non of the characters in the franchise get too fleshed out anyways..they are all mere plot canon fodder. My ADD enjoys the fast tempo which detracts from slow story telling - I’ve always enjoyed fast tempo movies over slow developing ones that fleshes out the plot and characters- give me immersive environments, character’s developed just enough to turn into canon fodder, and fast paced action sequences and high body-count…and a tub of popcorn and I’m in. It had iconic throw-backs and visuals that made it fun. The Romulus lab space station was a cool addition to the lore…and if the idea was to make a fast paced Scifi horror film with extremely cool realistic settings - job accomplished in my opinion. It was a fun watch.

Good points, but those feel like nitpicks. I had different reasons to dislike this movie.
I didn't care for most of the cast, but I can get past that, What bothered me most was the beat down of fan service. I was so frustrated by the end of this movie.
From the uncanny valley CGI bringing back a dead actor, the out of character lines that were shoe-horned from previous films, to recycling the climax of Resurrection with the New Born (which I have hated for 26 years)...The constant recycling all pulled me out of this story. I was just depressed by the end of this, with the thought that all we have left is to recycle even the bad ideas.
I'm beginning to realize that this movie wasn't made for me...the long-time fan that has watched all of the movies multiple times. It was a concerted effort from Ridley Scott, Fede Alvarez, and Disney, using a Gen Z cast, to keep the property and all of the previous films, making money.
The original films, for good or bad, were all launching grounds for innovative film makers. Disney now owns the property and this was just a "copy/paste effort" to keep the money printer going.

There are flaws but I think die hard fans have an unachievable expectation. example- the guns and ammo being compared to the tech to what was on the USCSS Nostromo, which was already 115 years old before being refitted as a commercial hauler ship,Had blue collar workers on it and no high tech labratories. If your gonna pick a film a part at least know what to complain about. Its scifi- it's all completely farfetched and yes nothing will probably live up to the original and even the sequel but there's lots to enjoy and savour here.

I wanted to love this movie but I cant get past the aliens saving humans, not charging just because there is a gun pointed at them or facehuggers hanging out on table tops waiting for the room temperature to go down please fk off with that. They turned them into little bitches. I did love the ending, I was a fan of resurrection, cheeped me out big time. And I really REALLY loved seeing the hoard of facehuggers swarming this crew that was amazing. I dint like seeing them just sitting around like animatronics. and I REALLY didnt like that iconic line getting pissed all over.

Im surprised fans have reacted so positively to this absolutely derivative mess as opposed to Scott’s attempt to take the franchise in another direction. Like alvarez literally made a list of tropes from the last 6 films (70something rebooks, black goo, engineer, etc) and built a script around them. These people have no dignity.

  • @MovieHeretic

Just a thought here, the Alien franchise was falling apart after a couple of badly received movies, it needed a reboot and a return to what it is about, Romulus achieves that, though the movie has a heck of a lot of faults. We get an addition to the alien lifecycle, not entirely sure we needed that, a return to out and out horror in space, and that weird creature at the end - no spoilers. Hopefully they go somewhere new in the next movie; keep the horror but head out into unexplored cinematic territory. One question I have is, where did all the face huggers come from? The best explanation I've been given was they were cloned by WY scientists, presumably from the Big Chap shown in the movie, complete with harpoon I would add.
I'm not even going near the physics in this one; no gravity would mean?
I am amused by the defenders not finding the same issues in this movie as were used to attack previous Alien movies, for example the speed up chest burster thing was decried in AvP, but gets a pass in this movie, seriously at least be consistent in your views.

Have to disagree on some points - I thought the characters were more than just paper thin.
Navarro: A pilot/mechanic/brave but admittedly just Xeno fodder in the end. She's close to Bjorn and is spiritual as we see her praying - so despite being shaven headed and very tough looking in her exterior and stride - she's also very vulnerable - totally personified by her final line in which she pleads for her desire not to perish.
Tyler: The leader and an old flame of Rain - he saves her life by sacrificing his own. It's his plan to go to Romulus - he's the good cop. His weaknesses are for me less about character and more about him being a young man thrusted into a very adult situation that he's not prepared for.
Bjorn: An immature but key ringleader with Tyler in the attempt to escape colony life - he drives the momentum - he wants Andy to come etc despite having deep seated synthetic issues. For me he's the Hudson of the film - his bravado masks his fear.
Andy - A last relic of Rain's dad - he's effectively a T800 protecting her - his damaged nature makes him transcend his synthetic nature. He transforms midway when implanted with Rook's programming. I think the whole purpose for Andy as a character is this - his whole original essence shows us Rain's softer side. Without him, we would see a very different and more brutal character.
Rain - A mother figure to Andy, she's lost her parents and is now effectively a parent - out of all the characters, she's the most mature - she's the one urging the others to get back to the ship when things start to look precarious. She's a guilt-ridden foster mother who wants to leave her child behind but realises that he is her family. She's clearly the most intelligent human in the group - her problem-solving skills are what keeps the group alive for the most part.
Kay - Sister of Tyler and cousin to Bjorn - she's the baby of the group - the most vulnerable. I would say she harmonises the group as she's the most feminine character of the entire group - she's gentle, caring and has a youthful naivety that makes her susceptible to the idea of going to Romulus. She's very much a passenger to Tyler/Bjorn's plan.

Reviews like this make me interested in what other films this person likes. The stuff he is listing off as "bad" is stuff I could say about pretty much every single movie ever made. It sounds like a very specific personal bias masquerading as a rational critique of the film. Very hard to take seriously. (A classic example of this is The Room. The Room is an objectively bad movie, but people have every right to like it and say it's a good movie because it brings them joy. And you wouldn't be wrong for saying that. But you can't rationally defend The Room as an objectively good film by any measurement. Same here. Aliens Romulus is an objectively well-made film, and the things he is nit picking about it are standard stuff used across every film and tv show in order to create a narrative. You have every right to say that doesn't work for you, but I don't think you can claim the things he is claiming as rationale critiques of the film's quality and be expected to be taken seriously).

    Hi Veternova!
    Brilliant effort and thank you!
While not having seen this movie yet (still debating whether it's worht it), from the teasers and the ensuing deluge of coverage on line, one could gather some hints and pointers as to this recent incarnation's direction and flavour. I must admit so far I loath both.
The director and producer really fouled this beautiful franchise beyond recognition. Without sounding condescending but it feels gamey and as if it is directed towards pre-teens audience, who have not yet developed their common sense, or appreciation of basic real world laws (physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics). It's all very well making a very scary movie but that is not the be all and end all of a good Sci-Fi genre creation (hence creativity & originality which are lacking).
Alien Romulus is horror action but it is neither Scientific nor is it Fiction. It's moronic.
I agree with all your great point and so glad you did not hold back the punches.
I'd give this movie a -2 (on a scale of 1-10) in comparision to Alien and Aliens. They are saying it is 3rd in ranking?

Others picked up on this, but quite honestly, film making today is riddled with uninteresting characters, loaded with agenda driven socially engineered messaging and stories undeveloped and stupid that barely make much sense or completely override what went before.
Romulus was never needed or required in the first place. The backstory of the Alien origin was the perfect weapon to deliberately balls up the mystic of the Alien creatures origin and Scott with Disney have systematically applied a scorched earth policy to what went before with both Alien and Aliens.

Not only this but there's an arguement to be made that every piece of the Nostromo would be able to be easily found anyway. If they knew where it exploded, and they would know the power of the explosion, then they'd easily be able to calculate how far all pieces have travelled, therefore it's only a matter of time before they gather all the pieces and find what they're looking for.

      Other then that
The big chap surviving in space and being a resin type shell is not that for fetch from the expanded lore of the aliens franchise, they are called the perfect organisms for a reason, they would have ability to survive almost anything.
Will when it comes to the characters
The only ones they made you care about are rain Andy and kay.
Navarro is the ship’s pilot, and most there to be the host of the main xenomorph
Bjorn is the main a hole of the group and even though you know why he hates Andy, he never let’s go of that grudge and we see he is it the smartest of the group as he also it does from falling if Andy didn’t catch him, he shocks and leaves the other three after rook and Andy say they can’t bring Navarro back to the ship and he foolishly attacks the xenomorph unit cocoon and we see what that cost him.
Tyler seems to be the only other one that they make also care about a bit, you see he is a old flame to rain, is one of the few members of the group that is friendly to Andy and you can see he is annoyed at brjon bullying at Andy and also in using Andy and leaving him behind since they are going to a plant where they don’t allow androids, yes it understable why he and rain are mostly made at Andy when he does save their lifes a few times in the film, but I feel you also forgot that Andy was rebooted the moment they put the chip on him, it changes him, in fact he had not memory on who he was and ask the grew and they manage to escape the face huggers why they are calling him Andy. When rook tells him what his main adjective is he says what he was programmed on him before he stop and we rook basically brainwash him as he literally becomes another Weyland working for them. Also let be honest even though Andy was right when it came to their survival, you also need to understand that Kay is literally his sister he blame himself for the mess he got them in and you can eh start to panic the moment rain reveals to Andy that she is pregnant which if you remember was something he didn’t know. He was think right in that and I’m pretty all of us wound if that was our siblings in that scene.
Kay deciding to inject herself with black goo is obviously dumb and foolish, but it is also understandable as she is the memeber of the crew is unaware of what going on, she is asleep when grew are attack with the face huggers, she sees her fiend and her cousin get killed by this thing and also is unaware of Andy reprogramming and change of personality. When the group does find her in the hive Andy is the first one to suggest to Tyler to inject her with the black goo, cause of the video showing the rat healing itself without obviously not knowing what it really does to the body.
Rain is the only one that suspicious of it true purpose and Kay was somewhat awake so she heard them talking about and when she told to go back to ship a low she is heavily injured so she does the rash decision to inject something she doesn’t even know about in her.
Know you mentioned why the type of gun isn’t mass produce, it technically is as in the expanded marital, including games comics show that this type of gun does exist in different types of guns
The zero gravity fight let’s be honest is a cool idea for this movie and it s the reason how she is able to kill them all since it does catch the xenomorphs off guard when the gravity hits zero, and let’s be honest the films aren’t accurate to how space works most of time.
The this act ok this one is where it’s truly divided for the fandom, I personally thought it was great thing to do
And the balls they had to include that I mean you don’t a lot of horror film turn the baby into a monster
It gross,,it was creepy, it was uncomfortable I felt it work
but here the one thing is the franchise is divided with people only liking alien and hate everything else, some people love aliens but hate alien.
Some love alien 3, other alien resurrection
Some love the prequels and some hate it.
There no way to honestly be please the fandom.
This film doesn’t add anything new other then weykand knowing about the xenomorphs this whole time, and that the black goo is still present. Still this film was better than what we got in covenant and honestly it did bring the film back to it horror roots that has been missing

I have a lot of problems with your frankly blatantly unfair criticism. I do agree the characters are pretty 1D but the movie takes place over the course of a couple hours so it's not really unreasonable that they aren't developed much (it's also the same with every other alien movie), and they're also generally quite likeable with human flaws. I don't see how you can't understand that a brother would risk his own life in the facehugger hall to save the life of his sister, and it's understandable he'd try to fruitlessly save her when the xenomorph would have killed them too. Andy yelling run is such a pointless nitpick as it's not any safer to do a hand gesture that might be misunderstood than to just yell run, and the point of the argument about the door wasn't that she was mad but then didn't have a point, it was to highlight the new intelligence he had gained in being able to make such a precise calculation when an hour before he couldn't even see properly. You're right about the pulse rifle scene being flawed, but not in the way you'd said. It makes sense that an experimental rifle could have auto aim (we see the same fully developed feature mass produced in the smart gun in aliens set 30 years later), and that it could have a smaller caliber allowing for more ammo capacity, however you didn't mention the fact that it's somewhat unbelievable he could learn all of this from video games and magazines, however i actually understand enough about movies to say it could be a hint towards an unseen past with veteran parents or ties to arms dealing. The human xenomorph hybrid was the most tense unexpected part of the movie and was stellar. Theres more points i could respond too but I'm getting bored of typing all this, I just get the impression you've watched one too many a youtube video essay, tried to make a cool contrarian take on a popular movie to get popular but you've not actually understood anything about what make movies good or bad and have just tried to do it by taking any nitpick you can even if they don't make sense. The only 2 flaws I genuinely found with this movie was that I thought they showed more potential with using Andy as a source of tension than they actually delivered on (especially with how scary the androids can be in alien isolation), and that it doesn't really make much sense that the cargo bay emergency release would be inside of the cargo bay itself where it would be hard to access and would kill the user in the event of a cargo bay emergency, otherwise it was pretty perfect as a tense interesting sci-fi horror. Would be interested to hear your response but I'm guessing you'll just delete this as you seem to have taken the easiest way possible when writing this video too

So what about all the other films that take place over a couple of hours but also have well developed characters. The amount of in-universe time passing being short doesn’t mean we can’t have 3D characters. They can be static characters, just don’t make them planks of wood.
In the originals, they are clever and make reasonable choices. And they act like real people with real motivations. As if they actually exist in the world being presented
They could have talked about what they should do if they have to run. If they’d have planned a certain gesture to make before entering the room, then Andy wouldn’t had to have said anything. Saying “Run” specified exactly where they are. It’s a movie so that’s why it’s there. But in-universe, they surely should just be sprinting when things aren’t looking good (without the need for words).
Tyler answering the headset is putting everyone in more danger. He can’t help her if he’s dead. To start talking in a room where you’ve been told that if you talk you die is really stupid. And it’s then odd that the facehuggers don’t attack them immediately. Almost as if plot armour is protecting him.
Having a pulse rifle with just the number of bullets needed for the characters to not die is lazy writing. If there was just one more xenomorph, then they’d be dead. Having aim assist means the stakes are on life support since all we know it takes is to start shooting and everyone will be fine.
Highlighting Andy’s new intelligence doesn’t negate the problem with Rain’s response.
You’ve inferred that Tyler has a past with guns without any appealing to what’s in the film. I guess he could be lying, but why? Him saying video games and magazines is stupid. And so it relies on the audience coming up with an actual reason so that it makes sense, despite no allusion to such a reason. If he actually did learn about guns from being involved with that sort of life, then why wouldn’t he just say that? Rain would probably already know what anyway. They’ve known each other for years, so that’s why she’s surprised he knows about guns. Because he shouldn’t. Video games and magazines is the real answer as far as the film is concerned.
Also, if something that I’ve highlighted drastically alters how the story will play out, then it’s not a nitpick.
Besides, nitpicks are still valid issues, they just aren’t consequential to the wider narrative.
So what does make movies good or bad (on an objective level)?

@@VeternovaYT I'm gonna reply paragraph by paragraph to each point in order
None of the alien films really develop their characters in meaningful ways, with the one sole exception of David from Prometheus/covenant. Even Ripley herself barely changes throughout all the originals, but alien doesn't need complex characters, it just needs like-able ones that at-least have some vague characterization, and that's what Alien and Alien Romulus do so much better than the rest, they have a small like-able cast. As for your points of the original characters being more intelligent, they objectively make worse decisions than the cast of this movie. A guy sticks his face over a foreign alien egg basically begging to be attacked, a guy follows a cat down a dark alleyway in a ship with a hostile alien, obviously gets killed as a result, and then a guy who just witnessed this decides the best course of action is to get in an enclosed space with the murder alien, and of course they all split up for no real reason.
Besides the fact it would just plainly make for boring cinema for them to have 30 seconds of exposition explaining a signal they can use if they get detected, which would unnecessarily break the tension and give away the detection that's to come, it also makes no sense. logically speaking in a worse case scenario the very slight difference in how precisely they are detected is nowhere near as much of a drawback as the extra time a signal would make and chance of it being missed by someone not looking, and also wouldn't help much given the full sprint they then immediately break into is just as noisy anyways.
People do stupid things in stressful situations. Are you saying if you knew a family member was going to die without your help that you wouldn't try help them, that the risk of you being killed would outweigh a certain death for them? I'd (like to) think most people would completely sacrifice themselves for a family member.
Having the exact amount of bullets is convenient for the plot yeah, but I don't really see the issue with that? What if there was less bullets but also less xenomorphs, or just less xenomorphs and bullets to spare? It's just part of movie writing, and it raises the tension well, and allows for creativity to see how she gets out of it
I can't even respond to this one. It's a basic human response to question someone making a decision that close, and it's a good response to show how much of an upgrade he got
My point with that one was moreso that it didn't make sense within the movie that we he understands how to use it. that was actual lazy writing
(even if it's easily givven context how I did in my comment, like you said unless explicit that shouldn't be on the viewer), but you didn't pick up on that at all. you've made nitpicks about basic logiccal things like responding to a family member who's about to die even if it risks your own life, yet didn't hit on two of the actual biggest nitpicks i took from the movie. I think you've not really got much of an idea of what you're talking about and that you've just watched too much cinemasins and think you're now an expert of cinematography. classic dunning kruger
There's no such thing as an objectively good or bad movie, and you're well within your rights to have these opinions, but they're pretty laughable less than face level criticisms, and I have just as much of a right to criticise your opinions as you do to criticise the movies. I just think you'd have a better time with movies if instead of looking for nitpicks out of nowhere, you let yourself enjoy a good movie. save the critique for the stuff that actually matters e.g. the fact they could have done a lot more to explore the themes of ai morality they brought up a tiny bit with andy
