3:54 as far as im aware the creator hasnt given any answer to this, but my personal thinking is that the DT extractor is designed to work with dead souls, which are described as being essentially comatose, and that while it can work with living souls, the soul being alive and concious allows them to actively resist its effects, and thus limit how much DT it can extract. thats all headcanon tho.
