    this is actually exactly what i want to see, whenever authors give outlining advice -- the full process for a specific project. and it's something i pretty much never see, so thank you for doing this series! it's awesome. looking forward to next week :)

    I can hardly contain the inner 5-year-old me. I managed to flesh out an overwhelming amount of details thanks to it. After giving a try to your 5000 WPH book, I've taken a look onto Plot Gardening. I did give myself some rest by visiting your YT channel, I did not expect your books to be this complementary. Being given those few farming tools makes me wonder much more about writing stuff, I'm starting to think if I've discovered a part of myself that badly wants to involve itself into writing. It isn't much, but thanks Chris. Thanks a lot. You'll get some real feedback once I get a filled exercices spreadsheet and observe my improvement.

    Looks like its going to be a geat series! One quick note though, the idea of taing a world of cliches and making it the setting of a novel has been done before, "Death by Cliche" written by Bob Defendi. Your idea sounds different, though, and I'm eager to see your twist and take on it.

      With the recent litRPG craze I'm betting there are at least a dozen books with a similar concept, and there will be many more in upcoming months. I intend this to be a short project that really only exists for the purposes of teaching. =)

    I was listening to another writing podcast and checking mailing list signups from Instafreebie when I got a notice that you had a new video out. Brake, Reverse, Turn Around.
    Apologies to ***** Podcast, I'll finish listening later.
    Good stuff so far. Tropes as currency.
    I've created a team of professionals to steal your tropes. They are at lunch right now. But they'll be back soon.
    Percolation of the plot is an interesting aspect of writing.
    Sometimes I can force it: What is the worst thing that can happen to this character right now?
    Write down five bad things and choose one.
    Sometimes it needs time before a good idea comes.
    Do you ever start writing before you know the ending? I can't without a clear ending in mind.
    Well done....another good one.

    • @emmanuelgonzalezcaseira9141
      @emmanuelgonzalezcaseira9141 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome :D I was thinking that maybe, in order to subvert tropes in a comedy like this, instead of drinking the potions, people just empty the potion over their heads, something like shampoo. When people ask why isn't called shampoo instead, the characters could come out and say "I don't wash my hair with it" and continue with their day.
      Just an interesting thought that I found amusing and wanted to share :P

    Geez, this reminds me of a series of online stories I wrote back in 2000. I decided to take to mickey out of Harlequin/Mills and Boon. I used all the cliches I could think of, heaving lily white shoulders and eye blazing included. It had the opposite result to what I hoped. Rather than make people laugh at my clever p*ss take, the readers lapped it up as a serious effort and demanded I continue the thing. I was mortified!

    While always watch your videos and generally get a lot out of them. This particular series is of interest to me. I have always been a Pantser. The idea of actually plotting out a book or even part of a book, in theory, is not new to me. However, the few times I've tried to do it, was a bust. I completely ignored any ideas I had written down. I call my method of Writing,
    "The Next Logical Scene" Ie; What is the next logical thing that should happen based on what happens in the scene I just finished writing and the work before it.
    For example; Hero shoots a woman on a street corner in the middle of the night.(She pulled a gun on HIm). What is the next logical thing he does call the police? (In this case he as a detective friend he can call.) From there keep building on the story, and the narrative of what happens. Because I'm also doing it in 1st person, it gives me the freedom to get inside the Hero's mind, and sees what he feels and thinks. etc. While I don't Dis, theose who can plan and plot, I have never been able to make it work successfully. BTW, I'm now 45,000 words into my second book of my PI series. I do look forward to seeing the rest of your series, and hopefully get at least one or two ideas I can try while I create.

    This sounds like a great series and now I really want to read the book. Are you going to use a pen name when you write it Chris? I read a couple of books by this guy who recommends aiming to get appropriate also boughts ;) But seriously, if you write this and publish, do you think you'll create a separate pen name? I think you'd be one of the best people in the indie community to test a pen name and launching a new series.

    Chris, love your videos but wish you hadn't chosen to develop an idea that has "meta" fiction elements, as well as comedic ones. Wish you would have chosen a concept that was more traditional, i.e. space opera, epic fantasy, etc.

    • @ChrisFoxWrites
      @ChrisFoxWrites  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve done several more traditional novels in other video series. The 21 Day Novel Challenge. 12 Weeks to a trilogy, and outlining playlists all do standard space opera stories.
      I wanted to branch out a little. I do this for free. If I don’t enjoy the content I’m creating there’s no point :)

    Where do I go or what do I read to understand what you are talking about? Tropes? I was expecting a video about structuring a novel. I'm not critisising; just confused.

      If you go to my channel page you'll see a section called craft. I did a series of videos showing how to implement a 3 act structure, and another showing Dan Harmon's story circle. Both have what you're looking for. This series is intended to be more organic, as a lot of people requested that after viewin the other videos =)

    If u want to write 5 books do u divide ur plot to those 5 books before u start the write the 1st one? As in do u decide what's gonna happen at the next 4 books b4 u write the 1st one?😭 I'm so confused!!!! And do u absolutely have to decide on ur plot b4 u start writing?;(

    • @ChrisFoxWrites
      @ChrisFoxWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want a broad idea of the plot through all five books, but it can be really rough. You want a detailed plot for each book as you write it =)

    Can you, at some point, do this again but for a serious book, like Void Wraith, or Techmage, or Shattered Gods? The Dark Lord Bert just.. hasn't really clicked, and the whole thing seems like a joke. And yea, I get that the novel is supposed to be funny, satirical, tongue-in-cheek. But what about doing this "for real" so to speak.

    • @ChrisFoxWrites
      @ChrisFoxWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it. A lot of people want a standard Hero's Journey.
      It's unlikely I'll be able to do one. An enormous amount of work goes into challenges, and I have other things in my career I'm more interested in, like woodworking, and prepping.

    • @tearstoneactual9773
      @tearstoneactual9773 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisFoxWrites - I wouldn't suggest doing it as a challenge. But just a set of more practical examples and nothing that has to be done for production/publication.
      Also prepping is great. Have you looked into Sootch and PreparedMind 101?

    • @ChrisFoxWrites
      @ChrisFoxWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tearstoneactual9773 what you're asking for is tantamount to a course, for free. It's a lot of effort to plot, script, record, and edit long form videos, and sadly I have zero desire to sink that much time in ever again. There's a reason I've stopped making videos for so long.
      I'm not checking out many prepping channels. I haven't been impressed with many that I've encountered, which is why I made my own. It's a lot of fun so far.
      There have got to be other authors out there sharing their process today. If anyone happens across one please reply to this so others can find them.
