- A lot of people have been commenting on my accent, and asking where I'm from, so I decided to do the accent tag in order to talk a little bit about what makes my accent different. If you have been using my channel to learn English, this video will be really useful to you because it can help you understand some of the things that I say differently than other native speakers of English so you will be better informed about what English accent you want to try to learn. But even if you don't want to learn to speak with a Midwestern accent, this is still useful information because you will want to be able to at least understand people if they speak in this way.

From Appleton, Wisconsin myself. And anytime I leave Wisconsin and go out west, there's usually people who notice my accent. I don't realize that I'm doing it, and of course don't hear it in people speaking around here. But I have been asked if I was from Canada. Haha!

Oh and we drink from bubblers. I refuse to call it a drinking fountain.

Fingtam Languages when I moved to Chicago and some of my friends asked me “hey wtf is a bubbler??” I put it to them this way... in Wisconsin, we drink from bubblers and throw coins and make wishes in water fountains lol

I'm from southern WI and I have a fairly strong accent but it is a strong SOUTHERN WI accent which is quite a bit different from the Northern WI accent that everyone associates with our state. The further south you go in WI the accent is influenced more by German (especially near Milwaukee) and the further north you go it is more influenced by Scandinavian languages. It IS a bubbler (it is kind of like calling tissues Kleenexes) as it's a particular patent by the Kohler company, a WI company, which is why a lot of us call it that. Also, it's about a 50/50 split between people who say coopon and q-pon (I say coopon and q-pon makes MY ears bleed). The other thing I hate is when people say crik instead of creek. Man, this comment is long. Sorry about that.
Well said , people always think there's just 1 Wisconsin accent, but truth is South Wisconsin accent is influenced more by the inland north accents (*Chicago* accent) while Northern Wisconsin accent is influenced by Upper Midwestern accents（*Minnesota* accent)

Nicole A I guess I would consider it southern Wisconsin, but depending on what city/county you're in it could be broken down as South Central, South Eastern, or South Western.
I’m from about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee. I feel like most of the comments also relate to me. One thing I noticed from ONLY Wisconsinites is when you run into somebody while walking, or mess something up, we always say “ope” instead of “excuse me” or something

When I lived in Texas, I had a tendency to say how far things were by time instead of distance. Texas and Wisconsin are about 20 hrs away from each other, not 1200mis.

Sounds normal to me, I'll never know the difference of normal and Wisconsin.
You can hear it when he says "on" and the first syllable in "naturally" there's a nasalized "ae" sound.

Funny thing I heard, I'm from Milwaukee and my friend was like "we don't pronounce every syllable, we slur it like we're drunk." Instead of saying Milwaukee, I notice myself saying M'waukee or Muhwaukee, we say buddon instead of button, it's funny. Guess that's what happens when the Germans and Irish moved here, 24/7 intoxication
I was down in Florida and me and my family were in a elevator talking when a lady asked where we were from. It's odd because we were raised on the fact we don't have an accent. Y'know? We got the cowboy accent down, we got the yanks, we got the surfers by California, but not anything for the midwest.

east and south are very decent when it comes to ways of speaking, i've always found it quite pleasant to talk to people from the east side, as someone from the south side myself
can't say the same about the north side though, and i don't have much experience west, so i can't say much about them

I was raised in West Allis, WI. In my travels throughout the US, people have told me that anyone from Wisconsin sounds like they are talking through their nose. I guess we sound a bit nasally.

You are a natural teacher. Your enthusiasm for your subject allows you to teach it with a very natural flow. I was raised in California, but both of my parents are from the midwest, the geographical differences in language are very interesting.
As a Midwesterner, I showed this to my girlfriend.. who is from New Orleans, and she about flipped her shit at the way “we” pronounce it. She was convinced I was the only one who said it that way lol

"Everybody has an accent" is debatable.
I grew up in the East Midlands of England which famously has no kind of accent. It's just plain English. We're surrounded by all these places with accents and you can tell they're from there. Nobody can tell exactly where I'm from since I don't really have any accent, all that people can tell is that I'm from "England" since I don't have any kind of foreign accent (or a local one). A lot of people around my area refer to themselves as accentless.
It's cool seeing these more unique and rarer sub-accents in other countries. Like this is obviously a thick American accent but is different to most Americans that you may hear in the media.

This is such a well-made video, seriously dude, you rock! You took so much time with this and I love your little comments for all of the words. Just wanna say that at 7:10 - that's not true. People with the cot x caught merger don't pronounce lawyer as liar because they use the 'OY' diphthong in this word (e.g. boy). Also, the merger doesn't affect 'AW' when it's followed by an R, so words like "or," "horn" and "corn" are all pronounced the same way you pronounce them. Apart from that, this video is flawless and I wish more people took the time with it the way you did. Oh and never change your accent. It's amazing.

England also has a whole tun of accents, so there is no particular way of saying words like 'aunt' or 'again', it really just depends on the accent!! I am from the south East of England and would say 'agen' but it varies a lot!

Yes in the south of the UK (e.g London) we’d say ‘aunt’ like ‘arnt’ but most people say ‘Aunty’ (Arnty). However if you live up north in like Yorkshire you’d say it like (anty).

Also- they should really add couldn't-wouldn't-shouldn't to the accent tag. Most of the Wisconsinites I know pronounce it without the "d" sound. Got called out on that in Texas. Also bag.

I was an exchange student in Wisconsin, and when I tried to speak as my teachers taught me at school, they couldn’t understand me the word bad and they explained to me the Wisconsin accent, and I was like the Wisconsin what ? 😂
My friend is always telling me that I pronounce "both" wrong. She says that I say it like "bolth," but I honestly don't hear a difference between how I say it and how other people say it. Also, I live in central Massachusetts, and I ALWAYS say "bubbler" and hate when people from out-of-state say "water fountain." But I always thought it was just a Mass thing; that's neat that people in Wisconsin say it too!
I lost a lot of my accent but it still comes out strong in 'ōt' words like "both, oat, go, oh"
Ah, the lovely and unique Wisconsin accent. So underrated. I knew right away you had to be from southern Wisconsin. I’ve noticed the southern Wisconsin accent is “sharper” than the up northern Wisconsin accent, which in my opinion is a lot more ‘elongated.’ My mom is from Tomah/Warrens which is up north, and trust me when I tell you, between my dads family being from newyork, my mom from up north, and myself chicago, I’ve been told many times people can’t quite pinpoint my accent.
I have a theory, and this is all just speculation especially in my Germanic language learning journey, that the Wisconsin and Minnesota accent in particular maybe comes from a Scandinavian or Nordic root, because a lot of Scandinavians and Norse people migrated and settled in those northern areas in particular. I am of scan/Nordic decent, and I’ve personally met some Norwegian and Swedish speakers in Wisconsin.

Yeah, it's definitely a big state with a wide range of accents.
I have a strange accent. My father was born in San Fran, grew up in Montana and the Dakotas and moved to Wisconsin before I was born. I was born in Wisconsin but I picked up a lot of my dad’s accent and way of talking. I have multiple elements. When someone from out of state (KY) was here visiting, he experienced mild culture shock (🙄), he said that everyone sounded canadian at the mall coffee shop but that my accent was different than theirs. Your accent is 👍🔥.

I’m from Sheboygan WI, and I know “Button” wasn’t on this list, but I get corrected ALL THE TIME on how I pronounce it. Some people pronounce the tt (kind of like water) and some people pronounce it buddon with the t’s like d’s. I noticed when I say words like button and kitten I say it without the tt like bu’in or or ki’in. I also noticed that a lot of people also say it like me/my area.
I also have an uncle that calls lunch dinner and supper/dinner supper.
Isabelle Kulow Yes, the sounds you are describing are known as the ‘glottal stop’ and the ‘voiced alveolar tap’ (both can be found on Wikipedia page if you are interested to learn more.) The rule in American English is that the alveolar tap is usually used as a replacement for the /t/ sound when it is found between two vowels (but only if the first vowel is stressed). The glottal stop is usually a replacement for /t/ when it comes at the end of the word, or before a nasal consonant that serves as the nucleus of the syllable. Most American English speakers I know don’t actually pronounce the final vowel in the word ‘button’ (they just go straight from the /t/ to the /n/) so the glottal stop is the logical choice in that situation. If you DO pronounce the final vowel, then it would be natural for you to replace the /t/ with the alveolar tap. (Not actually a /d/ sound, but close to it.). This is an interesting dialectal difference I haven’t noticed before. Thanks for sharing!

My dad is from Central Wisconsin, and my cousins are from Appleton. I have another set of cousins who lived in Illinois, and some from Southern Minnesota. They each have distinct accents, and are different from my Northern California/Northwest accent. The telling part is the -O sound. From what I can tell, the closer you are to Fargo, the longer you draw out the O. Dinner and Supper might be generational. My cousins use dinner and lunch. My dad (he left Wisconsin 60 years ago) uses dinner and lunch. My aunts and uncles used to use supper and dinner, but now mostly use dinner and lunch. My grandma always called the evening meal supper. In agricultural times, the noon meal was the bigger meal, so I think that is where it comes from.
I’m from the Chicago area, and my gf is from Wisconsin. The big one to me that gives you guys away is when I hear a Wisconsonite say bag. Bayg is engrained in Wisconsin vocabulary.

I grew up near Fond du Lac. We always said soda unless it was Jolly Good, then that was a pop or soda pop. I was so amused by Milwaukeeans pronouncing Fond du Lac "Fond je Lac".

I heard it when I first moved to the Milwaukee area in the mid 90's. I think it is more prominent on the NW side of the city because of Fond du Lac Ave. "Fond Ju Lac" or "Fond Je Lac"

I grew up in West Michigan along the lakeshore and you sound exactly how I talk, I think the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are all very similar in that theres a neutral northern accent with a hint of Canadian influence

I have always found it interesting how one can approximate where a person's from by how they speak their language.
The polite criticism phrase my parents would say is "huh that's different"

I grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota, so my accent is mixed with both Wis. and Minn. A lot of people get mixed up with wether I’m from Wis. or Minn because I mix my accent up a lot 😅

And another thing that I read from "you might be a Wisconsinite if..." you use time instead of miles. "It's a half hour away." Instead of saying 20 miles away...which is so true for me! Haha.

Lol well I think measuring distances in units of time is pretty universal, but Wisconsin is definitely unique in our pronunciation of “bag” (or really any word that has an a followed by a g). I don’t think I quite have that feature in my accent, probably because I live so close to Illinois, but I know a lot of Wisconsinites have that as a really strong part of their accent.
Yes same! When I travel to another state or place people are constantly staring at me when I speak and sometimes even laugh and I’m like “Did I say something, er what?” Then they laugh again lol😂

We called the shopping cart a buggy. When I moved from Illinois to Wisconsin my sister said my son had a Wisconsin accent. I then noticed she seemed to have a southern accent which I had not noticed before. It seemed slower too.

Honestly the best tell of your(mine as well although more northern WI)accent is when you said "odd". Also the word egg is really good tell. Usually we use more of an a sound then a clean e sound. But the most accurate test. Wait for someone to drop something or bump into something 10/10 they will say "ope"

To a foreigner your accent does sound a little different from what I usually hear on American movies and TV shows, which I guess is mostly Californian. I’m terrible at recognising different American accents, but yours sounds a bit more nasalised? Is that a feature of Wisconsin accents at all?

Yep, but it sounds normal to me lol! A real good way to tell if you’re from the Wisconsin area is how you say Wisconsin. We make a nasally and emphasized “O”, other people make soft and emphasized “C”.
Using interesting as a cover for the fact that you really dont like something is very true in my area of Southern Wisconsin.

I was born in Ohio and grew up there for a little bit, but I've been in Wisconsin for a long long time.
Northern Ohioans sound much the same.

You have such a thick accent which is weird to me because I consider my accent to be close to the “normal” American accent and I’m also from the southern part. I rarely hear people talk like you(but you were almost spot on with the word pronunciation).
I am from central Wisconsin and a lot of these things are very true! I pronounced all of those words at the beginning the exact same way!

I love it. I grew up in Oshkosh-they were ONLY bubblers-but I’ve lived in Birmingham Alabama for 39 years. They think I sound yankee or even specifically Wisconsin. But when I visit Wisconsin, they think I sound a little southern.

Also from NW WI. I have many aunts and have always addressed them “awnt”. But realizing most probably say “ant”.
As you go west in the state it is more likely to be aughnt. All of MN also mispronounces it. Andy in Mayberry says ayynt, as in Ayynt Bee.
I'm from Green Bay and I say "bohth" and for probably it's most likely "probly," People from the east coast say "wooter" for water.
Wisconsin accent sounds very similar to the Canadian accent ! I’m from Inverness Scotland 🏴 and I don’t sound the stereotypical Scottish accent they say we speak the queens English ❤

Quepon is a regional thing in parts of Wisconsin.
My(least) favorite when I lived near LaCrosse, was "I borrowed something out" instead of "I loaned something out". Up north the accent is closer to what you see in "Fargo".
