HOW A MICHELIN MOTORSPORT TYRE IS MADE. Inside the factory.

  • We take a trip to Michelin Motorsport's HQ in France and get the low down on exactly what goes into serious motorsport rubber.
    Before you say "it's spelt TIRE", let us just remind you we are an Australian company, so no, 'TYRE' is still correct ;)
    The top of the line motorsport range are still MADE BY HAND, so we were able to get up close and personal with the manufacturing process to give you a bit of an insight into the process.
    A lot of manual work is involved, so every unit can be checked over by hand to ensure the utmost quality control is met.
    Massive thank you to Michelin Motorsport for allowing us to take a tour of the factory to make this video.
    Also a huge thank you to Jason & the folks at Jax Tyres in Albion for cutting up a perfectly good tyre for us to use in the demonstration :)

    I work at a tire plant. There is so much that was left out, I'm sure due to time and proprietary concerns. After curing there is a stage called final finish. That is where all tires are cleaned up from excess rubber and quality inspected. It's an amazing process to actually see.

      What's the ticket for tire builders at your plant? Ticket is the term we use at our plant on how many tires a tire builder is expected to build in an 8 hour shift. Which is 175 - 228 depending on which tire.

      @@duMaurier15 Unlike this video, the plant I work at is a mass production plant (2.5M sqr ft). They make passenger, truck and trailer tires. Its all done in stages. No one person builds a tire. The plant is rated at 40,000 units a day.

    Definitely educational. I’ve been driving cars all my life and never knew how tires are made until now. Glad to know how they’re made. I’m sure you went through a lot of obstacles in order to produce this video. I’m aware that there exists extremists/activists who only want to exploit tires makers because of whatever they think is unfair and find it relieving that ya’ll were able to produce this video despite all that.

    People who cheap out on tires don't realize that they are gambling with their own safety. Just like the people who cheap out on brake pads/rotors. Spend the extra money and get good/reliable quality products. It will last longer and perform way better. You spend more intitally than bargain brands, but you save in the long run.

    At 2:36, they’re applying the Bead Apex material, which helps transfer steering inputs from the bead through the tire. At 2:40, you’re indicating the wrong part of the tire. The Apex is the triangle-shaped bit that is immediately above the bead (between the fabric plies).

    • @fryloc359

      @@temgmcks00 does look fascinating. Used to have a Michelin car tyre factory here in NI. My dad used to work in it back in 1970s and he always said never stray from Michelin no matter the cost

      @@fryloc359 did you NOT read what I said... I said with INFERIOR tire companies.. meaning using poor quality products.. bad glue/ adhesion.. poor bonding agents.. but even with great companies and great products, that's still the reason why that happens.. I understand that that's how it's done, even with semi truck tires, glue the tread on.. but that's why you get tread separation, the weakest link in the chain

    • @fryloc359
      @fryloc359 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@youdig3691 Tread separation mainly comes from overheating the tire, which is caused by underinflation. Of course there will be the occasional instance caused by poor manufacturing. Tread doesn't get glued on, the rubber naturally sticks to itself, and once cured is completely bonded.
