Anytime…angling opportunities are limited in TO…so much of the waterfront is private…this place lets you get out there, catch some fish and enjoy nature.
What you caught was a Green Sunfish x Bluegill Bluegill hybrid. The mouth is not as large as a pure Green Sunfish. The body shape is more rounded like a Bluegill Sunfish. The chest and belly is much more orange like the Bluegill Sunfish and the operculum flap is too long and lacks the red spot on the tip is characteristic of the Green Sunfish. I caught hybrids Green x Gill at Brickworks before up to 10-11" long. Green Sunfish is not really that rare. You just need to know where they can be found. For example, Lake Aquitaine and Binbrook Reservoir have healthy populations of Green Sunfish. They are found much shallower and they hide among the cattails so they are caught less often than other Sunfishes unless you fish tight to the cover. I hope you will find a pure Green Sunfish soon.
I think you’re right that it’s the hybrid. I’ve fished for so many years and I never even knew Ontario holds these creatures. So exciting….i guess i have to drive way outta my regular area to find a pure breed.
Cool, that’s my backyard, didn’t know there were fish there…. Must be a back eddy of the Don river. I’ll leave them alone, as I mainly fish trout and walleye, but good know🎉
I know of other spots where green sunfish are in southern Ontario, but I have never seen photo or video evidence of one being caught in Toronto. Very cool. I may have to go to the Brickworks to catch one, just for the novelty of it. Cheers.
@@ToothyWally Yeah, it looks like it could be a bit hybridized. To be expected though in a pond that also has bluegill and pumpkinseeds. I know bluegill are the most common species that green sunfish hybridize with (that we have in Ontario anyway), but I'm not sure if they hybridize with pumpkinseeds or not. Time will tell, I guess. Regardless, even if it was hybridized, that one had mostly green sunfish as its genetic makeup. The yellow edges of the lower fins, the gill plate flap and the size of the mouth were dominant features and are dead giveaways. Anyway, I figured the greenies in Ontario would spread, as green sunfish are notoriously prolific reproducers. It was only a matter of time, but I wonder who put them into the Brickworks pond. They were never there before. Someone had to have intentionally added them to the pond. Most likely from another Toronto location where they have been rumoured to exist. But the only other location I've heard of green sunfish being here in Toronto is several kilometres away. It's a bit of a mystery, but it's still neat to see them in the heart of the city. Cheers.
