I wish that they taught me what those hidden conventions are back in grade school. Another way to showcase what those numbers stand for is to lay out the partial quotients on the top of each otehr and simply write out the zeros in full (like it's done in this guide (mathvault.ca/long-division/#Long_Division). I think it'll make it a lot easier to learn and retain long division that way.
