    I did hear that the spoon shouldn’t touch the flame or smoke when melting wax, this helps stop it from over heating. You can also stir it with a toothpick to move it around and melt more evenly.
    Such a good idea to use it on ribbons, that’s cool!

    • @anita64
      @anita64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They sell special holders for a wax seal spoon for use with the wax pellets. You put a tea light underneath and the spoon fits exactly in the cut-out circle. That way it has just the right distance between the flame and the spoon.
      You can also use two or three different colors wax. Just put the desired colored pellets in the spoon and melt. You can give it a little swirl with a tooth pick to create a marbled effect.

    Really interesting. I've only just started getting into wax seals in the last week as a natural progression from my ridiculously excessive fountain pen and ink hoarding craze of the last lockdown year. I'm a complete wax seal noob but have been playing with cheap eBay/Amazon wax sticks, mainly wicked ones, and some J Herbin. I know the latter from their inks and I can already tell the Herbin ones are far better. I have yet to dabble with the glue gun approach. I had that bubbling effect when melting two beads together in a spoon over a flame. The beads were taking too long to melt together and I was doing it two-handed so I had no free hand with which to stir it with a toothpick. Lesson learned was to use some sort of stand over a tealight candle. I have one but was being characteristically lazy.

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can understand the laziness, hah!
      The wax quality is definitely a concern if you ever use them for snail mail, which is why I generally use Artisaire or Nostalgic impressions’ melting wax

    When is the perfect time to remove the stamp? I find that sometimes I try to remove it too early and the wax is still goopy and the seal is ruined, but if I leave it too long I feel like it's really hard to remove the stamp and I'm worried the paper will tear. How do you know when it's the right time to remove the stamp? Thank you! :)

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      If the wax moves/wiggles at all when you start to remove the seal, it’s not ready! In my experience, with good wax, you don’t have to worry about waiting “too long”. Artisaire wax has some flexibility to it that keeps it strong and in place, even with movement. Some wax formulas are more brittle but you should still not rip the paper 💕

    • @craftyartcorner3656
      @craftyartcorner3656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Usually few seconds to 1-2 minutes depending on wax beads you using - I guess you learn that by trial as some beads might take a little longer to dry - don’t give up - keep trying and enjoy the process not just the out come project 💕

    • @prva9347
      @prva9347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you buy common leading makes of wax, about 10 seconds. I started using sealing wax 40+ years ago, have had a few breaks lasting years but you pick it up again quickly. You'll probably need only a little practice before you get the hang of it, based on how the wax looks/feels - I suggest having fun doing some tests. But actually, sometimes having a less than perfectly done seal makes it look more authentic and homemade. Whenever I have a lot of sealing to do (just did 60+ Christmas cards) I put the cards in order of how important it is for the recipient to have a perfectly done seal (fellow-crafters, say; whereas some people won't even notice there's a seal!) and do it in the order of less important up to most important. By the time you've done, say, a dozen, you should be able to do perfect ones each time quickly, especially if you're using wax beads and know how many per stamp impression you need (I couldn't buy wax beads 40 years ago). And yes, if doing it in bulk, Blushed Design's ice tip is a good one; I myself use a freezer block.

    The best thing to do and my personal opinion unless you use those handles as some sort of like decoration or display, is just taking use a file or something like that and file a little flat spot onto the bottom of the handle, then just hold it the same way every time holding that flat spot on your thumb or whatever and you'll always have the correct orientation. This is how those steel stamps that people use to stamp into things usually are, they will have a little ridge or a cut or something on the bottom side of the stamp so you can feel that line and know that your stamp is orientated correctly. If need be, you can repaint it back over the top so you can't tell

      Hello!
      Most likely, the problem was caused by poor quality wax. I have only had this happen to me when I was using cheap, old fashioned wax that is brittle and stiff. That’s why I like Artisaire’s wax-it has a flexible hold that doesn’t break. I have partnered with them over the past few years, but started using their wax before that, just because it is the best that I can find!
      If wax does get stuck, you should be able to remelt it over a small candle (carefully!), and dab it off with a paper towel

      You “can”, but you will want to purchase the upgrade to have them hand sorted rather then sent through the machine. Each post office handles this differently so make sure you go in and ask what their policy is.
      But if you want to be extra careful, first be sure that you are using quality wax-some brands are brittle and will break-and I would use an outer envelope to protect the whole letter/seal. Just to be extra careful about the additional travel.

    I was hoping that there would be a tip for a way to make sure all the fine details of your seal come out beautifully... I have a stamp that has some gorgeous little stars on it, but every time I use it, they just come out like little blobs instead! Anybody has any idea how to help with that? Is it an issue with the wax quality? The details on the stamp being too fine? Maybe the wax being too hot?

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That problem is so specific to each stamp, that I am creating an individual video for troubleshooting problems. The good news is that you are on the right track! I usually start with checking the wax temperature-if it’s too hot the wax is too “melty” to capture those details. If that doesn’t work, try switching up your wax. A matte wax (usually thicker consistency) will sometimes capture those details better than a metallic. Unfortunately, some details are just going to be difficult no matter what, but I’m sure you’ll a combo that works!

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need specifically sealing wax that is designed for wax seals. I recommend Nostalgic Impressions or Artisaire-both brands made a strong but flexible wax. Some wax brands are brittle and will break, or have an oil residue.
      Think of it this way: candle wax or crayons are literally designed to disintegrate, so they will fall apart easily.
      Bees wax would be very “on brand” for your skincare range but bees wax has an oil in it that will stain your paper and makes it more likely that it will slide off.
      You can experiment of course but I wouldn’t invest in the idea too far without testing it out or trying to find a super dry formula… also, doesn’t it melt into a liquid? There needs to be some density to it in order to create the impression.
      If you’re planning to use this for your brand and not just to play around, then I highly recommend using the proper materials. You don’t want to appear cheap or like you don’t prioritize quality!

Lately I have been having trouble with the seal sometimes not easily coming up off of the wax. And if I have to pull too hard the wax and sometimes part of the envelop gets stuck into the seal after I have pulled and I have to burn it off with a candle. This is disappointing and can ruin the effect and even the envelope. This use to never happen. What do you think that I am doing wrong? Thanks

    Hi! I loved this video and the topics you addressed. I sealed with wax many years ago, but I haven't been able to "get back on the bike." I think I'm doing OK with the actual sealing process, but I'm not sure, as I've seen more than one method. I have seen people just wax the upper flap1/2 of the envelope, and while sealing, the other half of wax is sealing onto a coaster of some sort (glass, ceramic, quartz, etc.) When I do that, my second half doesn't stick to the bottom part of the envelope flap when I'm ready to close it. Am I supposed to just seal the envelope closed (both flaps?) and then seal with wax? What if I want to open and close the envelope more than once, for example, to read a letter over and over? I look forward to your expert response.Thanks do much!

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Phyllis! So excited to see you jumping back I to wax seals!
      If the wax cools before it is placed on an envelope (keeping the flap up and on a coaster, as you described), there are super strong double sided stickers that you can purchase that are strong enough to hold the wax seal in place during the mailing process.
      Once the wax seal is in place, the envelope can be opened but it will, of course, damage the envelope.
      If you know you want the envelope closed from the start, I recommend stamping your hot wax and seal directly to the envelope. This is the most secure technique

      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, you have to choose your waste if you want to switch colors. You either waste a little on a spoon but efficiency isn’t great (wasting time), or you can do what I did as a stationer who used wax seals in bulk all the time and buy a new gun every time ($$), or you can waste your new wax color by making marbled seals until the color comes clean ($$$)... or you can waste glue sticks. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Want to save money and get lots of colors to use. Buy only clear or white glue gun sticks and a big box of many color crayons. If you take the wrappers off the crayons you can cut up pieces to add to the hot glue you use. Mix it well in your spoon or on parchment paper or other non sticky surface to mix the glue and crayon wax together. You can vary the mix so the more color you put in it becomes more waxy and non sticky. If you use just glue gun you know how much of a pian it is to pull the stamp off. The crayon has enough wax to get the right mixture for you. Cheers!
    I forgot to add you can make your own extra wax to have later just mix a stick of glue and 1 crayon in a stick free container or material. You can then cut up small pieces to use in future stamps. This is how you save money on that expensive wax sticks/pieces. You can even add glitter or other eye catching material. You can buy glue sticks, glitter and crayons from a dollar store and save MUCH MORE MONEY!

      Could you elaborate? Some things are normal, some are not! A dark or scorched mark is not normal and is a result of burnt wax (too hot). I would guess that it is still a temperature issue. Allow your glue gun to sit a little longer so that the wax is an even temperature. Those rings are usually caused by uneven cooling times as the wax is poured out.

    I just got into was seal and I bought this rly pretty hummingbird seal but I think I somehow dropped my tealight candle wax and the seal is turning blue in some parts does anyone know how to fix that?

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is the problem with the stamp itself or with the wax?
      If it’s the stamp itself, you can CAREFULLY hold the metal part over the flame to melt the blue wax and dab it off with a paper towel until it is removed.
      If it’s the wax, there might not be anything you can do. Hot wax that falls onto it will naturally melt and then mix in with the original stamp. It’s more like a chemical reaction and harder to fix
      Feel free to send me a picture if I misunderstood and I’ll see if I can find a solution: Katrina (at) BlushedDesign (dot) com

    Can I use resin for wax seals?

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ray!
      I’m sure you could use resin! I have never tried it and have limited experience with resin in general, but from what I do know I would advise that you wait and allow the resin to set a little before pouring and stamping. Otherwise you might not form the “lip” around the seal very well. And it might take longer to cool than traditional wax
      Happy Stamping!

    Do you do any wax sealing without a glue gun? Like those wax chips on amazon?

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a full video here: th-cam.com/video/QUpexo-CieI/w-d-xo.html
      I don’t recommend most of the brands on amazon, unfortunately! I haven’t found any that are quality and won’t either break down, bleed or transfer colors. Read reviews carefully!

    On 6:16 instead of putting a stamp, you can just tape the sides of the ribbon.

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, the end result looks tacky and unfinished when you use tape, unfortunately! This way you’re hiding the “tool” with the stamp, which is being used to beautify the entire piece. AND you don’t have to get anything extra out in order to do it, which is efficient and perfect for those who are a little bit lazy but want the prettiest things 😉

    where did you get the wax ? Looking got Antique gold. I love the idea of using the glue gun as a ( wax gun ) please link me to the wax and the glue gun !!!

      I recommend Artisaire’s wax-from what I have tried, theirs is the best in terms of color payoff and flexibility (good for mailing). I’ve linked their sealing wax page here (antique gold is the first one): artisaire.com/sealing-wax/

    Hey can someone tell me how to keep my wax seals? Like if I put them on paper they won’t come off but I really want to keep some!! ):

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used wax/baking/parchment paper In the past with some success, but my best results come from using a marble coaster or a metal platter like you can see I used in this tutorial (when switching out wax colors ☺️)
      You want to look for something naturally cool and without pours or small holes that the wax will get stuck on.
      Happy stamping!

    does anyone know where i can find biodegradable wax?

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s biodegradable then it probably won’t work for wax seals-if they break down then it doesn’t stay together in the mail, unfortunately.
      If you just want to play, you can use bees wax or natural crayons

    What causes wrinkly wax seals

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually wax that is poured too high or that isn’t hot enough, causing the wax to cool unevenly or too fast, resulting in bumps!
