Just got notification of a new video. I'm out in my shop working on my grandmother's Improved New Goodrich No 2. I'm hoping all the pieces of there because it came to me in pieces. It has been in her attic for over 50 years in a box.

So glad to see this. I just picked up a 1914 99k handcrank. It is for a very nice lady who is developmentally disabled. Only recently in her life has she been socializing and learning new things. I take in several machines and help with a small group, and we sew on projects together. They all love my old handcranks! So now I'm getting this lady one of her own. I've got it pretty clean, and finally rolling smoothly. The tension unit doesn't release (missing the tiny spring on the inside of the head) and the face plate's thread guide is broken. Not sure how best to repair that. I may have to go back in and work on a few more bits as you go through your machine. Goodness knows, you've saved my bacon a few times on machines when I was at a loss!

@@BobFowlerWorkshop I just went back through your video list, and there was your series on the old 99K! I now remember watching it. Why didn't I think of that earlier. Interesting note, my personal 99K is a 1912 model, just 1 year into it's production. I hadn't realized that before.

It's been in it's cabinet in the livingroom since they bought it

Nah, this machine got a lot of use by the family in the early days, she's just been sitting for a while...

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Marianne is my mother. They used it, but it never left my grandmother livingroom, until it moved to my mother's dining room. Has never been in storage

I just picked up a sweet 99 made in '55. Would a compressed beehive spring cause the tension disks not to mate? The tension assembly is clean and installed properly. Thanks, and I like your videos.

I highly doubt that. Most likely, the issue lies in the transfer bar being deformed or incorrectly adjusted or installed.

@BobFowlerWorkshop Thanks, but I'm unable to find any mention of a transfer bar in numerous searches and publications. Also, I didn't see the Singer 99 manual on your website. You have some very nice info on there. Thanks again.

I've checked the upper thread tensioner position/parts, the timing, presser foot height, and everything else readily adjustable. Calibrated the bobbin tension. Tried different needle/thread combinations...
I added a small, thin washer behind the ± indicator, but still have to max out the thumbnut to get enough tension (crazy tight thread) to tighten up the loops on the bottom of the work.
Also, with the presser foot down, there is no contact with the tensioner releasing pin. You mentioned the "transfer bar," but I've been unable to find it or its location. Could you give me a link to it? Muchly appreciated.

Also, this is a very clean, 1955 99, showing little, if any, signs of repair by a previous monkey. Again, I would greatly appreciate any and all advice that you may offer.

Hi Bob - vid only showing at 360p here in UK and pretty blurry unfortunately :( Is problem my end or yours?

If you're seeing low res, mouse over the video and click on the little gear at the bottom and select the quality level. It was uploaded at 1080p, so you should be able to get that...

Just rechecked and 1080p now available - must have taken it's time propagating to servers over here.

Mike, I'd have to try to count, but I have at least 8 or 9 model 99's. One that is going to be a permanent member of my collection is a hand cranked from 1918. Not only is she beautiful, she makes a beautiful stitch...
