    6. buy a tent with a rain flap that goes all the way down the side of the tent. 7. learn how to dig a rain trench 8. sleep on a cot 9. bring your clothes in a plastic container (not your travel luggage) that fits under your cot. 10. always double the size of the tent for the amount of people camping (1->2 person tent, 2-> 4 person tent, ...) You're welcome!

    Dead limbs overhead can't be understated enough! I pretty much grew up in the forest, in Pennsylvania on my Grandfather's 200 plus acres of property. My Grandfather, Dad and all of my uncles always warned me about dead limbs, and it saved my life when a 200 lbs plus branch, that I'd just been sitting under, broke about 50 feet up, and crashed to the ground. It was louder than a high powered rifle, and it's a good thing I didn't have to go to the bathroom...although it scared me so badly that I think I may have peed a pint of air lol. Always look up, if you're not sure, move!

    I pitch a new tent several times before I go on a trip. I even do it in the dark or the rain! You (and your tentmate) can't practice too much.
    Count your stakes, so you don't forget one.
    I make my groundsheet BIGGER than the size of the tent, then I fold it under after pitching the tent. Just leaving it flat still catches some rain that follows the tent to the bottom and pools.
    Do check for "widowmakers" (weak branches that may break & fall in the wind or storm) and don't pitch in a low spot where rain might pool or flow underneath like a small creak.
    Check your seams! Hang the tent between two trees or poles on a line, and go inside and look for sunlight, then seal the seams or leaks. Check the seams again when you get home.

    Been camping for 20 years. One thing I always advise new tent campers is purchasing a 10x10 canopy. You need one to put above your tent or picnic table with your food and stoves and supples on it. A tarp is needed to the table and food at night. Tarps under the tent are a plus. Nice video!

    For me, a ground cover is a must for extending the life of your tent. Also, depending on how beat up the existing tent floor is and/or weather conditions I use a custom-cut tarp or thick plastic to use inside the tent as well as a ground cloth. Love your tent and your tent will love you back! ⛺️

    Actually, using a ground sheet or footprint is a mistake. Protecting a tent floor that will leak anyway is a useless endeavor. The priority is not to protect the tent floor. The priority is to protect the camper. To keep water from wetting the camper, there are two basic steps.
    1. Never place a tent where rainwater will either puddle (any low spot) or flow to a puddle (any channel or longish channel from higher ground toward lower ground. High and low may be only an inch or two difference vertically.
    2. Adding a “plastic bathtub” inside the tent. Measure the inside dimensions of the tent. As an example say, 2’X8’. From your local hardware, buy a sheet of visqueen from which can be cut a rectangle that is 1 foot wider and 1 foot longer, in this example that would be 3’X9’. Fold up all edges 6”, miter each corner and secure each one with duct tape. When the tent is set up, spread out the visqueen tub inside. Now, the camper is protected.
    When camps were deluged by continuing rain, I have had water trickling through the tent - in between the floor and the visqueen tub - for 2-3 days. I and my gear remained dry.
    Every tent floor that I’ve seen leaks. Don’t bother with a ground sheet unless the tent doesn’t have a floor in the first place. And, why would you buy a tent without a floor?

      @tessa4883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it's too big, I believe you can safely fit it to size as long as you fold all the excess bits of ground sheet UNDER itself. (Also, as long as it's fine weather there's no need to worry about an oversized groundsheet sticking out.)

    • @BigDukeX
      @BigDukeX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@shad0w2393 the ground sheet actually serves multiple purposes. It protects the floor of your tent against pebbles and other debris that can puncture the material.., it prevents the build up of water underneath the tent during heavy rain, and it also keeps the bottom of the tent relatively clean. This simply addition extends the life of your tent as well as prolonging your investment.

    Watch for the 5 W's. Good W's are water and wood nearby. Bad W's are widowmakers (anything that can fall on you), Wind, and Wigglers (bugs, snakes, rodents, etc)
    It's never fun to discover you put your tent too close to an anthill, or right in a natural wind tunnel.

    Good tips. The guyline was is interesting because with hammock tarps and the like, tight and taut is usually better. But with a tent, leaving a tad bit of slack makes some sense. I almost never use guylines either, but when I have, I've made them somewhat taut, but not super tight.

    1:00 I didn't know how to stake the guylines out properly either... you see many campers, even experiences ones, who have them staked out super tight. But what you're saying makes sense to me, as most tents are designed to have some space to maneuver - hence the poles of the tent are not fixated to the ground, but are stuck into the tent floor grommets. If the guylines are more loose, they would only hold the tent if it tilts too far to either side...
    It's as you said, none of these brands seem to provide you with a proper manual on how to use their gear properly - I find that quite appalling given the price that you pay for many of these items. I had a similar experience when I purchased my first quality sleeping bag... I was just lucky enough to find a video online where it was advised not to store the bag in a compressed condition at home, but to hang it up somewhere - otherwise the down will lose all that fluffiness, and your sleeping bag will not bloat up and hold you as warm anymore.
    Another thing is how to clean your gear. Apparently you must not put your tent in a washing machine using detergents, and you're not supposed to keep your tent in direct sun light for too long... I put mine in the machine using the hand wash program at 0°C and added regular hand wash soap, as that's virtually the same thing. Can't think of anything more frustrating than spending all this money on outdoor gear and then mess it up... and it's not even people's own fault, as most just don't know any better because many outdoor companies fail to provide you with a more detailed user and maintenance manual. I'm very happy that people like you go online and clear some of the misinformation up and set it straight...

      “Guy line”. Little lengths of cord that run at around 45 degrees to the ground up to the tent and apply moderate tension equally in all directions to help maintain the tent’s shape and function. The pegs for guy lines should be also inserted into the ground at 45 degrees roughly, to form a 90 degree angle between the guy line and the peg. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy-wire

    A guy line (on a tent) is almost always on the rain fly portion and is mainly used to make sure the rain fly doesn't touch the main body of the tent.
    This is to keep moisture and rain from seeping in.
    You also want it tight enough to withstand wind but not so tight it stretches the fabric to the point that the waterproofing will become damaged.

    6. Buy a backpackers style air pad which will keep you off the ground and your back straight. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on those thick queen sized air mattresses, only to have them fail on me. They always lose air through the night leaving you on the ground. I’ve never had problems losing air from a backpackers air mattress and never end up with back pain in the morning. Those large style air mattresses also never last more than a few camping trips and take up way too much space inside your tent.

    Please, a tent is a tent! If you can't set of v up you shouldn't be there! It's like buying put together furniture. Okay, this is for real city slickers! Although I can see this guy speaks from stupid. Meaning he has experienced all these.
    You do not need a ground sheet if you have a good waterproof tent. Second, bring a tarp for harsh weather! Make sure it covers the entire tent in a wrap around overlap fashion. Dig a trench around the petimentrt, with a water channel away from your tent at the lowest level of the ground point. This way your tent still not flood, you can overlap the opening for further protecting and have a way for air to ventilate your tent. But hey, check the weather, expect a squall, if it's bad weather, don't go. My secret, I have a 8x 8 tent, I put a 7x7 tent inside! I use a cot, and I try to face the sun in the morning, keep the heat on the rear during the day. With a tent in b tent you can keep the drafts open, have a double skeeter, guard, and a small area to change clothes.

Then one day, we went to a spring and set our picnic area and beach seats under some shaded tree. I was there just sitting on the chair and enjoying the breeze when a huge snake just dropped from a tree a few meters from me. It was very angry and had that stance...and at that moment I knew, I'll never ever want to think about camping again. This was a sign from the upper echelon.

    As a newbie camper I appreciate the advice, thanks for this! I would appreciate advice on how to insert and remove Tent Poles (threaded through the material) as this seems to take an eternity to do, the material just keeps gathering and the poles keep coming apart!!

    Not only that, but you SHOULD pitch your tent in your back yard when it's cloudy and raining. If the rain makes it impossible to pitch your tent, you need to seriously stop and think about whether you're ready for camping. It won't be at all like the silly ads: two smiling people with perfect hair in ironed clothes setting up the tent INSIDE a building. LOL. Can they set it up when it's dark and snowing somewhere in Canada while the kid whines loudly "Mommy! When is the tent ready? I'm c-cold!"

      Largol33t1, you make very good points here for sure. As for the handling of the problem with the "whining child," best solution would be to simply strap the lil toddler into a harness, & then chain him/her to a nearby tree.

    A friend inadvertently pitched her tent (in the dark) atop an anthill.
    They chewed through the floor to gain access to her bread!

    You forgot something about the first point! Always set up a tent before a trip so you can also properly inspect it! They could have faults or damage, wouldn’t you hate it if you got your camp site, pitched the tent and there is a huge hole in it :’) happened to me once with an old catoma (new at the time)

    My tent: lightweight hammock n rain poncho as the rain fly, no pad, no poles, no ground lol just rope n 2 stakes
    ..does anyone know how to keep the dew off? I live in Colorado, heavy dew in the mornings complimented with afternoon rains means nothing is dryyy 🌦🙇

    So, what is a 'foot print?' Of a tent? Im so tired of that 'trending phrase' so why not call it what it is-the diameter of the tent!?

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not a “trending phrase”. A foot print for a tent is a piece of fabric placed under the floor of the tent to add protection to the floor of a tent.

    I havent been camping in years and unfortunately I ended up with a crowd that seeming brings all the shit with them that I could do without and never turn back. Many people dont do any research hardly on anything they buy. They just look at the Amazon review and buy that sh*t quick. However, I have seen people give 5 star ratings as they explain, "But...". They will go on to say how the product is awesome but it is flawed and actually sucks. Apathy when it comes to buying shitty products is strangely common these days. If you have to pay $20 more for a product that has 1-2 years more of a warranty that is usually a good sign. Unless you are purchasing a Samsung laundry machine. IDK how the hell those folks get away with saying their product has a 10 year warranty. They mess up and rot quick.
