Thanks for a good video. I just ordered this lense to use on my EOS RP, which is also on its way. With average hobbyist photographers like my self, i think all the "short comings" of this lense will never be an issue and consider this one of the best buy you can make in the low end of the scale.

I rented R8 and this lens last year and I had exactly exactly the same feeling, so small so light and such amazing quality that you always want to have it in your bag 24/7!!! I think this lens and this combo alone, made me feel in love with the RF camera while I was about to switch to Sony because I was so jealous to see how friends had such sharp images with relatively low prices 3rd party lenses. But since I have rented the R8 and this lens I'm like ok I am happy with Canon again while I was getting very very frustrated!

I have an old EOS and a bunch of lenses, and I just bought the r100 on a whim. I am enjoying it with my EF lenses, and I am now ordering an RF 50 mm and this video has been very helpful.

Pre ordered it. Have it for 4 weeks now and I really like it. But the default lens on my R remains the RF 35. But as you said the rf 50 is a no brainer. I don't know any reason for not getting it. Even if you have the rf 24-70 and the 50 1.2 it still makes sense to have to 1.8 if you want to pack light.

How much of an improvement is this over using the 50 1.8 EF with an adapter? I’m definitely getting the 35 1.8 because that’s a length I don’t have currently so it’s a great choice as my first RF. The 50 isn’t expensive either but if it’s not much improvement I could stick with using the Ef with the adapter.

no i had the same setup as you did and it sucked. every rf lens i've used oversaturates the images and has way to much shadowing especially for a prime lens when there is a lot of light outdoors and it smooths out the images way to much leaving no rough edges on buildings and the images can also come out smudgy because of the excessive smoothness and oversaturation the rf lenses produce

The 1.2L version is $2k more and there's barely any difference. So $200 isn't much to ask when it's the 10th of the price.

I'm here after watching Christopher Frost's review on this lens, and I'm curious to know if you had the same issue as him when using the control ring. Apparently, in order to either manual focus or use the control ring, you have to half-press the shutter first to make it work, which is kinda weird for me. Appreciate the response in advance!

Thanks for the insights. Agree with your thoughts. The RF50 1.8 is the most compact full frame 50mm with autofocus in mirrorless systems to date. Canon got the price-size-performance ratio right. I got both this RF50 1.8 and RF50 1.2. These lenses are what makes me keep the EOS-R. While I'm not a big fan of Canon sensor tech and colors as I much favor the Leica DNG RAWs, the workarounds in post processing are manageable for my hobbyist use.

Very interesting but I'm not getting this. I want no less than a F1.4 for a prime lens, otherwise I'll stick to my much more useful (Tamron 24-70 F2.8 IS) and (RF 70-200 F2.8 IS). Sure it's very cheap but I would rather have the choice of paying 150-200$ more for that extra aperture.

I have a Tamron 24-70 2.8 sp, and love it on RP. But with an adapter it is really heavy. This lens comes when you dont want to carry the weight, and when your bag is small. I do not recommend the rf 50 1.8 for narrow historic streets by the way, but for occasional street shots it is really like feather, plus more light. Regards.

There are a lot of reviews that say same things about EF 50 1.8 STM. And they are generally correct, but nobody tells one thing the bokeh is absolutely disgusting. You can argue it is a small detail BUT, the only real reason anybody in the budget of kit and these lensees would go for a nifty 50 is B O K E H. It looks ok with soft backgrounds like bushes and that bookshelf on, but when there is a single object, like say a church bell tower in the background of your model... Well you can see where it's going - oddly specific. EF 50 1.8 STM ruined a shoot for me. And tainted my love for canon stuff. I see same appalling characteristics in test shots here. Take another look at the books, 8:54 mid to lower right - the edges of books are scraping my retinas. The outlining is very prominent and it has very weird vertical doubling. In my pics with bell tower against the blue sky it made the tower very soft and smooth, but there were TWO towers with weird ringy outlines around them. I barely kept myself from throwing the just bought lens in the bin. Mind you, I still shoot with Eos 6D, the original one, I am on a very tight budget. Gave it away to colleagues friends kid, don't want to see it again and am too honest to sell it.
No vintage lens would do that to anyone, and not even older nifty: 50 1,8 II.
    I am very sad.

Not a great fan of the fifty, so this makes a lot of sence. It's very useful sometimes but for portrait you need to go a little longer and for street and environmental portrait a little wider. So dropping £5-600 on a copy is a bit much.
