Also at 0:36, the AN/AAD-2 was an infrared surveillance/reconnaissance sensor used in the Aerojet SD-2 Overseer unmanned aerial vehicle. It was later modified with a CRT display and tested in the RA-3B photo-reconnaissance version of the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior.
Possibly the lore is that without Von Braun and the Saturn rockets, the US chose instead to use Project Orion to beat the Soviets to the moon, leading to a world where spaceflight is much further advanced.
They couldn’t make the propulsion any less, so they just kept adding mass to make the acceleration survivable. Barbers chairs on the flight deck. More howitzers. We used to be a country.
this is a part of history i am not aware of, and i wrote a paper on the space race. when was there a push for militarization in nasa? what did von braun do? i tried to find stuff online about this but couldnt find anything explicitly talking about it. really do want to learn more about this, do you have a source?
@@haakke Von Braun was a nazi rocket scientist, who was pivotal in development of the V-2 and who was then spirited away after WW2 into the US, where he worked on the first spacecraft. A pretty controversial figure, due to basically getting off skotch free despite being part of the SS, but he did indeed know his rockets and he's attributed to be one of the reasons why the US won the space race.
@@haakkewikipedia suggests he seemed to distance himself from suggestions to arm a space station concept he had at the height of the cold war. Perhaps that?
@@00nemin Well, I'd say he's controversial not so much for the SS affiliation (I believe that was just an honorary rank awarded for his rocket work during the war), but more so because he, like every aspect of German industry in the 1943-1945 timeframe, kmowingly utilized a significant amount of slave labor from all across Europe in constructing V2s. And, in the grand scheme of things, he was actually completely irrelevant to the US space program.
@ ah that makes sense, but the bombing doesn’t. Getting something down from geostationary orbit in a timely fashion is gonna take a lot of delta v. You can’t just have the bombs burn retrograde and loiter down, that would take hours. Not very practical. Then again it also means the bombers would be basically impervious to missile strike at that altitude, and the bombs would have a lot higher reentry velocity than an ICBM warhead, so they’d be harder to shoot down. Time from release to impact is still an issue tho.
Time to target is important for a counterforce strike. A second strike capability is by necessity mostly a countervalue mission, since the enemy (nuke) forces would have been mostly expended in their first strike. Cities, factories, etc. don’t move anywhere within a few hours. So a geostationary posting is fine for a second strike but useless for a first strike. Low orbit, otoh, well that's a lot bigger can of worms...
So the south pole is censored, presumably shackleton crater, i wonder if this is set after horizon was destroyed and something happened to the anomaly?
You’ve probably gotten this a lot, but what KSP mods do you use? Also, is there any remote possibility (since, obviously, you have a ton of mods) that you could share the craft files? Especially interesting to me are the Soviet Oscar-class gunships, they look so cool
Alternate history/near future analogue horror involving colonisation of the moon, portals to other solar systems, hard sci-fi space combat (think The Lunar War by Theo Bouvier, as well as SAVAGES) told in incomplete 'flashes'.
The Lunar Security Bureau motto "Clypeus Caeli, Custos Futuri" translates to "Shield of the Heavens, Guardian of the Future"

Von Braun (or at least I assume it's him) being killed prematurely is an interesting way to touch off an alternate history of spaceflight.
Possibly the lore is that without Von Braun and the Saturn rockets, the US chose instead to use Project Orion to beat the Soviets to the moon, leading to a world where spaceflight is much further advanced.

Look into the Medusa Drive! It's an even better way to use nukes as propellant.

So, with the flashpoint of von Braun's death, the timeline splits and this version of NASA has no one to pushback full militarization? Interesting.
