While i was listening your words and your personal info..(Belgium and 27 yrs old), by the way, take it as a compliment, because i was not intending to comment, thinking you were under 20's yrs old.. very nice reaction, the only thing i am not sure about is if you got rammsteins usual play with words in this one. "Der schwarze Mann" normaly doesnt refer to a black man but to a mystical evil, you could translate it with Boogie-Man but i am not too sure if its quite the same thing. also he plays quite a lot with american things in this video like weapons and cheerleaders. AND yes, the things they were eating had a political uncorrect name here in germany too "n-word kisses" now we call them "foam-dish" or after a brandname that makes them "dickmann" which is quite a german habbit to call things after the brand that invented it or was most popular.

Growing up here in the US we went from trusting strangers, not locking doors to turning people into authorities if they are driving around the hood. I do remember adults talking about Nuclear war as a child and being very scared of that. All in all my childhood was care free I was able to stay out till dark go pretty much where I wanted and not have to check in with my parents. Now people put tracking devices on their kids and everything. I think growing up in the 70s and the 80s was the best time.

The original name for what they were eating in the credits was "Negerkuss", which was then banned in Germany, leading to most people using "Mohrenkopf", which still was complained about by oversensitive people. Nowadays these things have half a dozen different names, like Schaumkuss, Schokokopf, Schaumkopf, Schokoladenkuss, Dubler Köpfe, Köpfli and many more, leading to enough confusion so that most people either use the brand names, or they actually just go back to the old name despite some getting offended by it, which is kinda funny to me.

A very important detail in the epilogue: you see the band members watching the black woman and her son/brother sitting in the fenced-off area while she's looking at her phone. The camera zooms out of the scene - and you see that the woman actually watches THEM as well on her smartphone. Everybody's monitoring everybody, until Till smashes their TV, thus breaking the vicious cycle, the black and white world crumbles, and the colors return.

First, greetings from germany. The black chocolate things with white cream we say "Schaumkuss" oder "Schokokuss". Before a big shit storm this thing was named "Mohrenkopf" or "Negerkuss" for over 50 years. But at this time today every old name will be changed if some people cry. But its okay if they are happy now they have the new names, the important thing is that we can buy them today like for 50 years :-) becaue they are very good

Here in Brazil we had some stories like that, it was something like "the bag man", he would come for misbehaved children, throw them into a bag and take them away.
But I guess they're really talking about the world now, how many people gets paranoid about immigrants and alike. They had a crysis about that in Germany recently, so it's a interesing topic for Rammstein to work with I guess.

    Just some remarks:
The several times mentioned "Schwarze Mann" ("black man") is known as a child fright figure in the German-speaking area ("Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann" = Who does fear the black man). Depending on the region and time, it was understood to mean different beings: a dark shadowy figure or a man dressed in black. As a metaphor, the "bogeyman" reached a "peak" as personalization of evil, savagery, and the unknown in the course of colonization, and in the process also acquired a racist connotation. In this context, I find the consumption of those sweets (German so-called "negro kisses") at the end during the end credits very interesting, which work through this "black man" symbolism.
Also the colors usage is interesting (Black/White/Red representing the Nazi-color Spectrum). I also found it interesting at the end of the credits that when the TV was destroyed, the color came back into the picture.
Further, I noticed that the pie-like plots seen from above correspond to the "political symbol" at the lectern where the singer, wearing a straitjacket, gives his speech. After these borders & plots collapse during the wild shoot-out, the politician, unleashed by the straitjacket to spread his propaganda/fear.
Cheering on the cheerleaders is the equivalent of pitching an idea/product and the dancers are slammed with money to sell the bricks and guns to the landowners.
This Clip has many layers and can be interpreted in many directions. I see there is a statement on xenophobia and populism/media.

When I was young thats what they are eating was called "Mohrenköpfe"...in the Eighties it was renamed "Neger Küsse"...and because now it is politcal incorrect they`re called "Schoko Küsse".... I liked it when I was a kid in the 60th - because they were cheap like 10 Cents...and today I like it much more....

I feel like this song is very reflective of what has been happening in the west for a number of years now. The creeping rise of fascism...
Also, while this song is aimed at the west in general, I feel like a lot of the imagery is deliberately meant to evoke the United States.

Every person got its own interpretation of Songs from Rammstein. As a German my Interpretation is: this song is about Gouvernement taking control over Media and the Media tells you what you should hear.
Yes the sweets at the end was called “Negerkuss” or “Mohrenkuss” But only 1% of the Germans would couple it with rassism. It’s most the media produced by the government.
I give you an example. :
Following guy is owner of a Restaurant
    th-cam.com/video/bYP-zuQnT4E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n2i3PLNQz6nuboGf
This guy is happy and the only rassism he felt was by a black skinned guy he said. I could tell you so much more about it.

another german name for the item they were eating at the end was Mohrenkopf, or moor's head. think of the moor of venice. black chocolate over a white cream filling on a waffle. just about as appropriate as "dagmar bumpers" on a 58 cadillac.

Whao, I think you nailed it perfectly. You even saw the sweets they ate at the end (NEGERKÜSSE or MOHRENKÖPFE in German). Excellent interpretation. Perhaps you should have added for the non-German speakers that SCHWARZER MANN = BOGEYMAN and has no racial meaning in this song.

No idea if it was mentioned: Red Background, White Circle and Black Swastika - And the whole Video is only Red, White and Black (except at the ending, when they destroyed the Propaganda Maschine aka TV). Maybe a reference to the time where "control by fear" was maximized to perfection.

  • @kaisarion6668
    @kaisarion6668 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As an American, I didn't grow up dominated by fear. Quite the opposite. Fear is the most powerful motivator that exists. You can only understand America if you see it through the lens of fear. We have an extremely individualistic culture. Capitalism, has greatly benefited from this view of ourselves. We don't see each other as the literal family that we are. Our families have been atomized to maximize their labor output & create a unit for consumption. The nuclear family only exists because it benefits Capital. Through the use of fear as a political force, Capitalism has been able to advance it's goals of preventing workers from banding together. In the US, the Government is indirectly controlled by Corporations. We extend first amendment rights to corporations & we also define money as speech. So I can technically funnel money to my local politician through something called a SuperPAC. I can give unlimited amounts of money to their SuperPAC (they're supposed to be independent). Truth is corruption is legal in the US but we are constantly distracted from that fact by fear. We are fed fear by Politicians, the TV, the radio, everything. We are so consumed as a nation on a new civilization ending threat every 6 months. The two political parties have perfected the system in which they compete for corporate donations from Billionaires because that's who's in charge. The State is but a bureau that manages all of the interests of the entire Burgeoise (Wealthy) over those of the Proletariat (Those who have to work to live). So you end up with a broken Government that has no incentive to do anything for the working class because they represent the Oligarchs. Here is where fear is the most useful. You can always blame some powerless minority for the fallen state of the World. You are taught to never question authority. You are actively taught to dehumanize & hate each other. It's simply a game of chess for the Oligarchs. The more atomized & fractured people are in a household, the more labor you can extract from them. They also become more effective consumers. As an American, it's as if everyone is an NPC controlled by the inputs of the system. We don't even have universal healthcare or free college in the wealthiest nation on Earth but people don't care. Through the use of fear, the population of the US has been conditioned to accept the unacceptable and ignore that which is looking you right in the eyes.

I don't know if someone said it in the comments before, but "schwarzer Mann" doesn't mean "black man" in that context, it is a wrong translation. Yes, "schwarzer Mann literally means "black man" in german, but it also means boogey man... And boogey man is what the song is about....Greetings from Berlin

After seeing so many people argue that it's about the "boogy man" as opposed to being a political statement about racism and fear of immigrants, it was so refreshing to see someone who can read into what the song is really about. I recommend watching again, and you'll catch the beginning with the immigrants in the concertina wire from the beginning. And at the end, it's been called "Moors Head." And if you watch the end closely the immigrants are watching the family eat it, while the family watches the immigrants, before going back the view from the immigrants.

React to the official Rammstein video "Radio" please. It's great music and a very entertaining funny video, filmed ingeniously in retro style. It is good to have subtitles or read lyrics (a feminist allegory of communist Germany, where the only "window" to the free world was radio. Radio waves could not be beaten with police batons or arrested)
