    47 is a reference to a club at Pomona College, "The 47 Society". TNG & VOY writter Joe Menosky attended Pomona College.

    1947: June 18, 1947. Roddenberry's plane crashed down in the Syrian Desert, and Roddenberry, who took control as the ranking flight officer, suffered two broken ribs but was able to drag injured passengers out of the burning plane and led the group to get help, saving them. He resigned from Pan Am the next year and pursued writing. The Oatmeal and NPR did a great feature on this incident. Coincidence?

  • @synthetic240
    @synthetic240 2 ปีที่แล้ว +171

    Besides the real-world reference, I just think 47 is the perfect non-random random number.
    It's close to 50, so you had a good chance to guess it.
    It's the better part of a minute, but less than you'd think.
    4 and 7 aren't adjacent and seven is odd, so it's more random than clean even numbers or adjacent numbers like 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, or 48.
    49 may as well be 50. 41 may as well be 40. 45 is trying too hard to be as cool as 50.
    47 is just... perfect.

      Like Julien said above, it was an inside joke at Pomona College in the mid 90s. Joe Menosky, a Pomona alumnus, included the number frequently starting with TNG Season 4, and it continued to be used in DS9 and VOY for a little while, until they got tired of it. Later, the number got some references in the J. J. Abrams movies. It's interesting that some of these 47s predate Menosky, which I guess is just a coincidence.

    In filmmaking a "C47" is what you call a clothes-pin. They are used on set to attach colored gels to lights, adjust backdrops or outfits etc. So on a film set "Grab me a C47" is a common phrase. I wonder if that's why the writers had that number stuck in their head so often.

      Unlikely. On Star Trek in the 90s, the writers were never on set, so they wouldn't be as versed or immersed in film crew lingo. The use of 47 is said to be from some jokey mathematical meme proof that all numbers equal 47.

Or maybe 47 *sounds* random/precise, which is much more important than actually being random or precise. If riker says "clear decks 10 through 50" it sounds like he's just making it up and guessing. If he says "10 through 47" then clearly that's an exact number picked for good reasons.

      The Manchester Mark 1 was built in 1948-9. It was based on the Manchester Baby built in 1948, which used the Williams-Kilburn Tube invented in 1946 for primary memory (not storage). However, the tube was greatly improved in 1947. It was the first practical CRT-based memory. Earlier memory used mercury delay lines, while later memory used magnetic cores.

    When asked to pick a random number between 1-100, people often pick 47. It's in the middle, but a little below, but not Right below, and not even, so it seems random.

      There's something going on because the USS Relativity NC number started with 47. Both Voyager and Defiant started with 74!

    I believe 47 is just 42, adjusting for inflation...

    47 sound like a number you’d use if you were making up numbers but didn’t want others to know you were making them up.

    If only they had worked it out so that there were exactly 47 references to "47" in the canon.
