- In this video Big Tractor Power spends time out in the field with a 4x4 CASE IH 8580 big baler baling pea vines. The 8580 was Case International's largest baler in production from 1987-1997. I never would have thought to feed pea vines and pods to cattle, but I live out west and we have a lot of citrus orchards and the dairy farmers buy the orange peels from the processing that makes orange juice to mix into the feed and the cows love it. Great video.

Back in the 1980s in the UK, I ran a Hesston 4800 behind a Fiat 160/90 ant later a Massy Ferguson 3680 mainly baling wheat and barly straw.They where stored until the autumn then chopped up onto carrots for winter protection against frost. nice to see this variant in action,thank you sir!
I had never seen a big square baler until I started going west in 1995. I was raised in southeast Missouri in an area that was all row crop and seldom even saw hay being baled although often saw straw. I had seen round bales but it was that late before I saw the big square bales. I have seen red bean hay being baled but never pea vines since there were no such crops grown in that area when my family lived on a farm. Thanks for the education, I like your channel have been a steady viewer for several years now.

I started out with a used 4800 Hesston ton baler. Bought it for $12000 in 1990. I owned it for thirteen years. But in the year 2000 I bought a 8580. The 4800 was a dirty baler to maintain. It had 140 grease zirks to grease and the big chain was a beast to fix. The 8580 was a very nice baler. I still own it but retired it two years ago. We bought a 2270 3x4 Massey high density baler. It is the best baler I have ever owned. We can pack bales they weigh 1700 lbs. amazing.

Here in the UK we call the pea harvester a pea viner , used to drive a FMC self propelled one back in the 90s.
I'm very surprised that they can bale after them, never seen that before, over here the pea straw after the viner used to start rotting within a couple of days, saying that as soon as the viners came out of the shed it usually started to rain for most of the season.
Only ever baked pea straw after the combine harvester when the vines had dried out properly.

FMC PSC-156. Pod stripping combine 15 foot long rotor, 6 foot around. The head has fingers (look like rake teeth) that spin and strip the pods off, inside the drum are beater the gently pop the pods open and the peas fall thru large "window screens"

Very interesting. Superb job Jason. Questions; Since the peas are harvested green, how long do they have to let that residue dry before they bale it? Do they rake it at all or just leave it sit to dry? Or is it baled at high moisture?

Very cool. FMC built pea vines and pea combines in Hoopeston, IL. OXBO squired FMC pea combines in 2002 and production was moved to the Byron, NY plant where they are still built today.

Hey BTP I live in Georgia and peanuts are a big crop here. Some of the farmers bale it into round bales and sold to cattle farmers.
Enjoy vid BTP👍Can’t remember model but it’s MF from mid 90’s very similar CaseIH. Last year some our crops were effected by the drought which didn’t do well at the head, lack of rain to fill the heads. Our MF 9435 windrower cut wheat/canola into rows, then mates MF baler press into large bales, these bales were pick up by our Chamberlain Loadstar tractor. All bales were sold to feed company.
That's one great set up when we were baling we had a McCormick Baker an a ford 8n did a great job but that's hard work an I don't you will find to many people to do it like that anymore.

Great video. I think it would be cool if you came and did some videos on our grass seed harvest here in Oregon (willamette vally).
Or hops. Not sure if that's your part of Oregon, but hops are definitely a more unusual crop to harvest.
Hops are cool also. I work on a grass seed farm and think it would be cool to show other people the bailing and hauling of the straw after being combined.
When peas are grown here, (I don't know if they will again.. I think the processor in Washington state closed.. )
All the residue is worked into the ground to help with next year's crops..
Would love to be able to bale it and have it for feed though!!!
We run the same baler, just the other color.. 1996 Hesston 4900.
We make grass hay in the hills of the north Willamette valley.
We've also made red clover and alfalfa hay.. something we need to plant again!!

I remember the days when the canning company had huge fleets of tractors. Some would cut the peas and others would use a pull type pea viner and follow behind the cutters.
I worked at a viner in Minnesota for a summer way back when.

I have a pair of Massey Ferguson 2250 3x3 square balers that are pulled by Massey Ferguson 8660 tractors. We bale grass, alfalfa, straw, corn fodder, bean stubble, rye, sorghum, etc. We do 10 to 12k bales per year in south central PA.
Very cool set up.
They do a lot of peas in my area (Plainview, MN) but I've never seen them bale the vines. They usually plant another crop afterward, many times sweet corn I think.
When I was a kid they had stationary viners (combines) they would haul the peas to the vinary and fork them into the machines. That would cause huge stack of vines. Think of a large silage pile. The vines were stacked while wet and you ended up with essentially "Pea Sauerkraut." The following Winter we would go to the Pea Viner and pitch the vines onto hay wagons. The Vines were compacted, and the tangled mess was a bear to pitch. You would have to cut through the vines, with an old flat disc blade bolted to a crow bar. Then you would tear the vines off the stack one fork at a time. Hey, but what else you going to do in January and February in Minnesota?
I pushed 3200 bales of straw through my Hesston 4910 big square this year. The baler is pulled by my 1980 8640.

I wonder if there was something wrong causing them to leave the pickup up. It’s pretty cool seeing all the pea stuff though I had no idea what they did to harvest peas.

We use a Krone 980xc 3x3 for hay and straw. We pull it with a 7290R

we used to feed pea vine bales to the beef cattle on a farm i used to work on and they preffered that to hay and straw

I have a 960A and a 9080 New Holland 3x4 bales and bale orchard grass , meadow hay , tricale/pea , barley/pea , wheat straw , alfalfa export Timothy hay , and just about anything to make cow or horse hay in North centeral Oregon

I do not know that weight unfortunately. I am sure they have some heft to them.

We should to have 2 hesston 4900s and manly baled alfalfa hay but we traded for a 3x4 2270 years ago
Ok- I have one question. What doesn't get baled? I am not a farmer. It seems like Fiat is like Diamler which they want to have a piece of everything.
Do those vines have feed value or used for bedding ??
I used to feed pea vine and pod bales to my dairy cows back in the day when I was still planting peas on contract basis ... As soon as we started feeding the bales, the milk production would increase significantly ... So yes, they must have some good feed value 😀👍

we fed pea vine bales to the beef cattle back when i was a laddie and they would finish the whole round bale befire touching even a nice hay bale, my old boss said they used to like them cause they were sweet tasting to the coo's 😉

Does a bug square bale have an advantage over a round bale other than ease of stacking?
Sharp Shooter … Easier to stake, because of the shape there’s less wasted space when stacking or hauling.IMO, there’s also less waste when feeding too.
Are the peas row cropped or sowed?
Drilled with a grain drill or air seeder.

Its a hesston 4900 with caseih badges i sold mine 3 months ago had it for about 12 years there are supposedly only 2 8580 models in the uk they were originally owned by acontractor in yorkshire!

marksandsparks1 it is likely what’s called propionic acid, it’s a preservative to keep the hay fresh
