    I adopted a 1982 V45 Magna in 1990 and drove her several years before selling her and buying a car. It was my first and only motorcycle. In 1991 I rode her from San Diego to the Grand Canyon, including through the Mojave Desert. I camped overnight beside the bike on the Fourth of July. It was a tough trip solo, but I did it. The heat of the black top wore out my new rear tire. Cords showing, I limped into Needles and was able to buy a new one with a harder compound that wouldn't wear out so fast in the heat. The rear brake had a problem on that trip, too, if I remember--I had to do some type of a road-side repair, I can't remember the details of right now. I made it to the Grand Canyon. I was thankful for that reliable and powerful engine getting me home in my exhausted and dehydrated condition after a couple days in the desert and 110-degree weather. Later, on a Christmas trip north from San Diego to Cambria to see my sister, I drove the Magna through snow while passing through the mountains. The Magna also took me down the Baja coast in Mexico. Mostly, though, she served as a San Diego daily commuter. No, the Magna was not comfortable on long trips, but since she was the only bike I ever owned, it's hard for me to compare. She had a very reliable engine. Now, years later, I'm thinking of buying another, if I can find a good one. I haven't ridden a motorcycle since then. If I decide to ride again, I would ride a Magna.

      Haha I like how you say adopted :P The correct term :) It sounds like you had a proper adventurous life with it, why did you sell it? :) Thanks for sharing the stories too, very cool. You can find some good ones over yonder, I get sent links from time to time :) If you want one I hope you find one :)

      @@TheGorillaBiker Thanks for the good video that brought back a flood of memories for me. The Magna was my college transportation, providing great service during my community college and university years. I sold her because I was accepted into medical school in Kansas, a much harsher climate than San Diego. I couldn't imagine carrying all the books I'd have to carry in my back pack. I sold her for $800 and bought a ratty VW for the same price that got me through medical school and residency. Later, with a wife and young children, riding motorcycles never crossed my mind. Now that our daughter will be starting university, I'm reminded of that wonderful motorcycle I used in college.

      Not at all I'm delighted you enjoyed it :) Ah ok that makes sense, sad sense but sense all the same!! Haha nothing wrong with a rat mobile either :) They always reel people back in, I've seen it a lot in acquaintances! Well I hope you find the Magna for you if you decide to go that route :)

      @@miporsche hi miporsche, that is not a reference to Michigan is it? It too was my college transportation, except I lived in michigan and on a couple of occasions I had to drive her in the snow. Like you said very reliable engine, my college job was to work at my roommates uncles pizzeria, on the weekends anytime but winter, I would make deliveries and had built an aluminum box on the back that could hold 4 large pizzas and soda. Could easily make over 120 on the weekend, even with the not so good fuel economy 6.50 was all I would ever have to put in.

    Even in Japan, this "v45 Magna" is a maniac bike. It is one of the bikes that HONDA sometimes says, "You don't have to record popular sales. I want to make an interesting bike." I love this BIKE ♬

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I imagine it's a bit different everywhere :D The geniuses in Japan designed it though, I wish they'd stuck to this design ethos for the gen 93 instead of trying to make it fit in more!

    First off, I think your review is spot on. My '88 Super was my second bike after an '87 Honda Rebel, which was my trainer. I did a lot of research back in 2010, and the "AhHa!"
    moment for me was those upswept pipes. That's what sold me. Cool, baby! I wanted something with a cool factor, and the Super definitely fills that bill. First thing I did
    after purchase was swapping out the fork springs for Progressives and the rear shocks for a set of $600.00 Works (Ouch!). That solved my comfort problem, of which
    the stock Supers rightly has. I also added a home made back rest which alleviated my fear of losing my handlebar grip when accelerating. The backrest made it possible for me to go on extended trips from my home in N.J. to Tennessee's Tail of the Dragon without straining my back. My Super came cheap. The upgrades didn't, but who cares. I've
    thought of selling her but haven't come around yet. And with Biden's hatred for anything fossil powered I'll probably keep it as I watch the price of gas climb. I get around
    36 mpg. Thing is, I don't need two bikes, and I like my Goldwing, too. What a fella to do? Stand pat, I guess. Great review, although I don't know how you Brits stay alive riding
    on the wrong side of those skinny roads like you do. But best of luck and stay safe y'all.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I shall start by saying thanks, glad you liked the review and I am NOT a Brit :D I'm Irish :P
      Yeah I've personally just always wanted one, the second I saw one was when I thought, that's cool as hell! Yeah my suspension upgrades changed the bike for me, a backrest is a great idea, I must do that! I'm also currently making up some frame clip on high way pegs so I can stretch out my legs as I'm going which will help a lot I think :)
      Ah when you love a bike and want to keep it the upgrades are costed the same....they're investments in to your own future :D
      Ah you have nothing on the EU and their hatred of all things fossil fuel powered...we pay about 7 or 8 dollars for 1 US gallon I think roughly and there are speed cameras everywhere. I hate to see it creep in over there too. Ah no one really needs 2 bikes but if you want 2 and they're paid for already, what's the harm :)
      British roads are also wider and better kept than Irish roads so we're even worse :D You too man!

      @@TheGorillaBiker some of my earliest memorys were of bikes, a biker gang turning up to the next door neighbours house and inviting me in to play atari with them :P and looking in the window of the bike shop, or my dad taking me to oulton park to watch the bike racing. i used to knock around with a mcc most of the guys were all 30+ years older than me but they were a great bunch of people, they might of looked scary to some with their long hair and beards and tats, but they were sound. not many of them still going now and lost touch with the main ones i knocked about with one way or another.
      the old bikes are nice, even the sports bikes of the 70s and early 80s were nice. a couple of the mcc lads had choppers, one guy had a old 750 triumph chopper lots of chrome and a really striking electric blue paint job, first time i saw it. it was in his living room in parts :P .. kind of miss those days in some ways.

    @Smilomaniac 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    100% agree with you about the seat and pegs. I've driven one (88 model) across Europe twice and it is murder on your rear. It's just a crappy plastic seat with cheap foam in it. Mine had a rear seat with a back rest and I'd sometimes sit on that during those trips, just to alleviate the pain. But okay, it's a cruiser, not a touring bike.
    This bike, rather the 1988 750cc version, is my first love. I went from a crappy '05 Suzuki to this and everything, apart from the seat, felt right. Unfortunately mine does not work anymore and never quite worked right and through circumstances took over a 2010 600cc Honda Hornet which is also absolutely excellent, but it's just not the same.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly, always have to recognise it's not what it's designed for, but it definitely could have been slightly more comfy, at the same time this bike was definitely designed for a certain look so it is what it is.
      Ah sorry to hear that, mine is now sitting in Ireland, if I ever move home I plan on stripping it completely and rebuilding it. Great bike too the Hornet, but not a V4 magna.

    Noticed a few rusty spots, just use a rag with WD40 to rub them away, and spray all metal parts apart from brake disk with WD40 after each wash. It's up to you as it's last keeper to make sure it lives as long as possible.Thanks for sharing, it has helped me in my descion to buy one ,just as a local fart about. I had an XV535 and XV1100 before both had terribly low ranges. I might experiment with making the tank area bigger at the top of the filler neck but I prefer to use a fully faired bike for long journeys anyway. Long may you both live! 🤘👊✌️

    Just bought a 87 super magna in the uk for £2300
    Pick it up next weekend when it should have a full service and mot
    This will be my second ever bike.
    Only passed my test less than 2 month ago.
    Will be a bit different from my cbr600
    I only got to test ride it around the block but I did enjoy it.
    The only thing that worries me is the brakes
    The brakes on the cbr are really good but I know the magna is a totally different bike.
    The brakes work but I will have to get used to braking earlier and harder. I hardly have to pull the lever on the cbr.
    I do love older vehicles. I’ve had a few classic cars so if I can get used to their quirks I’m sure I can get used to this bike.
    I really love the looks of this bike and have always wanted a cruiser
    Can’t wait to get it out on the road
    I fancy adding a screen, crash bars and highway pegs but have no idea where I could get some to fit this bike.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice, best of luck with it :)
      Haha it'll be veeeeeeery different to the CBR but a lot of fun too :)
      The brakes I would highly recommend to stick on the braided steel brake lines and rebuild them, makes a huge difference. But it's something I will upgrade at some point as the stock ones are well....not great :D But they work for the bike tbh. Take your time learning them and you'll be grand :)
      You'll barely have to do anything with it tbh! My one just runs :)
      Very hard to find aftermarket stuff for them tbh, just very little out there.

    A V4 is very unique to be fair... it's just crazy to have...
    The MT-07 has 68 N.M at 6,500 rpm ;) Love the feel of a punchy bike!
    I'll say it again though man it's a gorgeous bike & I don't think there's many floating around in Ireland.

    • @TheGorillaBiker

      I love it anyway :) Haha ah it's rough enough up close :P
      It would be comfy if it had modern foam etc, just 30 year old foam isn't so great, plus long distance I really need highway pegs.
      Does the Magna rev higher so? :O That's be a bit mad.....I feel a race coming on....in a straight line of course. Punchy bikes are the best I think....That said give me an R1 and a mental top end to check :P
      There's not many floating around anywhere! :) Well at least I hope not in a literal sense anyway , they'd be no good in water.

The other thing about these bikes is they can make you money. Clothes boutiques will hire them to put in a shop or window display, so you can get a bit of rent for them, makes an even better investment. I agree with you, the price will just rise over time. • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respectfully disagree, most bikes I've had and have ridden over 200km in one go are absolutely fine. Again I don't really agree, I think a lot of bikes nowadays are made to cover large distances, most cruisers, ADV bikes, sports tourers etc.

      Not really sure how riding in a season is pertinent to comfort to be honest. Weather is separate to seat comfort and rider positioning etc. And if someone was to only ride in summer(I don't, I don't own a car so all year round for me too) it doesn't invalidate their opinion and experience on the comfort of a bike.

    the same colour but the 700cc they made just after this 750 because of engine size tax in US . The 750cc is better as I ride it. Only dislikes were too bouncy front end effecting quick standing starts and acceleration all round. (had mine stiffened) very poor single front disk brakes should have bee twin disk because you cant stop aggressively enough. Engine cooling water system prone to rust eventually ruining the engine. Bike could have been physically 30% larger overall to be taken really seriously. Great bike and design, very quick

      Yep I made a history of this bike video a few years ago to cover that as well :) The 750 from everyone I talked to just worked nicer, always interesting to talk to those who've ridden both!
      I changed the front end springs and shocks in the end, really improved the bike!
      The braking I'll eventually upgrade, the coolant I noticed how muddy it was when I bought it and change it regularly. Bike actually ran 10x better afterwards too.

    If you go into a corner too hot, you don't want good brakes, their more likely to cause a lowside skid, vague brakes will take speed off progressively and allow you to steer much like ABS. You're supposed to be watching the traffic and going with the flow.

    • @TheGorillaBiker

    Impressive numbers for power and torque. I have a 97 GSXR 600. It makes just over 90 horsepower on the dyno (yes I had it on the dyno) stock and around 50+ ft lbs of torque. To see a cruiser, 10 years older, not tuned for the race track, putting out numbers so close is pretty incredible! I like the dual tail lights! 👍 Spine is a trigger word for me. I have chronic lumbar issues. Motocross has nothing to do with that!! 🤔 I bet though, the sound buys an extra 100 miles or so of comfort!!! Dude, you have 4 trash cans.....WTF is the red one for? We have typically 2 in America. One for recycle and one for the dump. Maybe California has more but the other 49 states have 1 or 2. Texas just prays and shoots guns I don't know that they could spell recycle. Still though, 4? KTM makes hydro clutches on their MX bikes and everyone says good things about them!!! Your bike has a beautiful shaft!!! 😱 That didn't even feel right typing it!! 😂😂😂😂

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That they are, having a sneaky VFR engine helps with that :) It feels good too so not just on paper numbers! Me too! :) Man it beats the shit out of your tail bone I'll be doing something with the seat soon! Dump, recycle, glass and compost :) Handy work benches :P Hahahaha poor Texas!! I now am a fan of hydro clutches 100%! Hahahahahaha I bust out laughing reading that :D :D

    I bought my Magna new out of the crate. And I disagree with its being uncomfortable. With a bad back I find it is very comfortable. I have front pegs added. With highway pegs this bike gives you 3 positions to ride in. Laying back feet on front highway pegs, sitting up straight feet on normal, and dropping the rear passenger pegs and putting feet on them allows you to lean forward and releaves back because it lets you lean forward like a crotch rocket style bike.. Try it and see.. On long rides I position a bag behind me to lay back on and attach two large leather straps to the bars and ride it like a horse with Raines on cruse control. I also have 2 camera bags that I use that fit perfectly below my thighs and give me saddle bags. I love my two v45s. Both in red!

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did point out my height and size would affect the comfort, also it's all relative, there are a lot of bikes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more comfy than my Magna for any form of distance, doesn't mean I don't love it. Glad it suits you, but there is no money in the world that would make me ride a bike with leather straps :D :D

      It already sounds amazing :D I like the wheels on it, it's not a performance bike so I wouldn't bother doing a whole pile to it. I always wanted a supermagna so it'll be staying pretty stock :)

    Great video...!
    I can agree with alot of this, owning a supermagna since 2011 myself, a 100 % original 1988.
    Maybe it's a bit unpractical.....but so is having a wife.
    I just love mine (the bike, that is).

      That's a shame... I don't use mine much either. Just takes her out for a spin once in a while, in dry weather.
      This season will be different.. I'll do a lot of practice runs with my daughter, and the Shadow 125 i bought her..

      Parts for the supermagna is getting extremely expensive nowadays, especially larger parts and plastic covers. Smaller parts and wear parts is fortunately still affordable.
