I confess. I really love the way this guy plays. I was hooked the very first time I listened to him, and even more when I got to watch videos of a "clinic" he gave years ago. The guy is not only extremely skilled, he's also humble and totally not, how do you say... He doesn't put himself in a "superior" position, if I may say so. In Italian we say "non se la tira", but I don't know how to translate it in English 😁. Anyway... I attended one concert of his last November. First live concert after 40+ years... But I had my earplugs 😁. He was with his trio... "Brian Bellerman on bass, Marco Minneman on drums, Guthrie Govan on guitar, and we are The Aristocrats!", as they say at the opening of the concert (I somehow believe that any reference to The Aristocats is on purpose 😁). The drummer is also a beast. There's a video on Drumeo, I think, where he demonstrates how to play 5 over 7 over 11 (if I remember correctly). Anyway, three different odd time signatures at the same time... And sometimes he does that sort of stuff in concert 😅. The bassist, as always, is the one who gets less recognition 😁, but he's as good as the other two. Together, they're an incredible music machine. And they're funny, play with weird stuff, do weird things. Loved them.
I really appreciate that you met good old Guthrie. Next time it could be a chance to meet the whole group. I'd suggest either "Last orders" or "Blues Fu**ers" 😁.
And I enjoyed your reaction a lot. You play guitar, you know at least some music theory and stuff (more than me, but that's easy), so you could appreciate subtleties that would be off the radars of others. And I lied the way you enjoyed this piece. Can't wait to watch you share more of this stuff. 🙂
Thank you, and see you next time!

I am so glad to read all this. And to know my sofa is good for a lot of music. Not just acapella. I look forward to reading more from you!

Discovered him when this video actually came out.
One of my favourites. Saw him twice at 2 clinics in my music college between 2009 and 2010.
    Subscribed.

Little trivia for this song... Guthrie got the idea for the rhythm of this song by hearing a bird chirping in the park.

I had an experience like that decades ago, as I was sitting by a lake on an early morning, playing my acoustic guitar and engaged in some "call and response" with a song bird. Both of us mimicking the other.

GG played this using the bass and drum tracks from the Album version, so don‘t forget to give a big hand to his brother Seth on bass and to the incredible Marco Minneman!

The drummer was actually Pete Riley (amazing lefty drummer), and the Guthrie Govan band went by the name "Erotic Cakes". Macro is in the Aristocrats with Guthrie and Bryan Beller.

Guthrie is a beast. Definitely check out some Aristocrats. Maybe start with live "Furtive Jack".
