This video makes it seem like it’s just a bunch of computers waiting in a very long TSA line.

DEC PDP-10 @ 4:24 ... Incredible that they were still manufacturing those hulking beasts until 1983, 5 years after I was born.
That's the computer that Bill Gates wrote Altair basic on , (using an intel 8080 simulator on a PDP-10)

DIGITAL EQUIPMENT(DEC) RCA 301 AND 501' SPECTRA USUALLY TOOK 1 TO 2 DAYS TO FIX!!
UNLIKE IBM THAT USUALLY TOOK 2 HRS. ALL PROBLEMS WERE CAUSED BY OVER HEATING.
AS YOU SEE THESE MACHINES REQUIRED MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF ELECTRIC AND AC.

A beautiful Xerox Sigma. The first computer that I ever talked to.
The only computer I've ever talked to that could still read punch cards.
Terminals at 1200 baud, Basic, F4, Cobol, Apl. What more do you need?
And at the beginning, a Blit Terminal. I still have mine, but lost the red mouse and keyboard.

It’s in Seattle. No idea why one machine isn’t working, other than that it’s old!

I did not expect it to be so loud in there! Do old mainframe computers really make so much noise?

    • @janosKern1
      @janosKern1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I was surprised too!

Server rooms today are probably not much different DB-wise.
Those things suck up a lot of power and thus need a lot of air cooling.

The machine rooms with Control Data 6000 and Cyber 170 series computers were usually quieter. These Mainframes are liquid cooled, and there were no fans in the mainframes. The other equipment (printers, tape drives, disk drives) had fans and made some noise. The CDC 6500 shown in the video has liquid refrigerant compressors in each of the 3 bays, and operates quietly.

I’m sorry I couldn’t enjoy the video more because in many cases I didn’t know what computers we were looking at. Also, you panned over the markings on the machines so fast I couldn’t keep up.
Of course I realize that in that noisy room there was no way you could have given a running commentary, but I dearly would have loved an overdub before the video was uploaded to TH-cam.
But anyway, thanks for the glimpse of the past !

Sorry I couldn’t give you more information, as there was a lot to cover, and my aim was just to give a brief overall impression. And there were a lot of things there that I wasn’t familiar with myself. Glad you were able to get some degree of enjoyment from watching the video, and thanks for watching! Also, I see there are a few comments from people knowledgeable about some of the computers shown!
