I JUST freed a large raccoon from a trap after watching your video. Your advice that they "always run away from the trap", along with using a string to release the trap were very helpful. Thank you from Rhode Island.

I caught a raccoon tonight while trying to catch a feral cat and was absolutely overwhelmed when I realized I had no clue how to release him without getting hurt.
This saved me from having to choose between an expensive visit from pest control or doing something stupid to avoid it.
    Thank you!

Great video; thank you for posting. Wondering if I am the only one who looked for an answer AFTER having a raccoon in a trap? :- |

Yeaaahhh...too late to tie a string now! Got a catch in less than 24 hrs.

Thanks for the information. For the 20 years I've lived in this wildlife-filled area I've always taken chances when I release (which I always do because I have a soft heart). I've stupidly let the animals run between my legs as I faced them. Last night we spotted a raccoon via the smart camera on one of our bird feeders. The red pepper flakes my wife mixes in the feed deters squirrels but the raccoon didn't seem to mind. So, I set our baited trap below the feeder and the critter was in there this morning. Your method with the line worked perfectly. Thank you very much!
Here's how my brain works: "This will teach that animal a lesson and it will not return to the bird feeder." Ha ha. In reality, I'm probably training it to stay away from the trap and the animal is probably passing that on to his/her buddies this very moment!
By the way, it was obvious that the raccoon had worked hard to escape - probably most of the night. I think it was tired because when I opened the trap it sprinted out about 15 yards and then took a tumble doing an almost perfect somersault - then scampered further into the woods with the remaining energy it had.
I'm compelled to tell a true story on myself about a possum that was caught in my trap. When I discovered the animal there was no movement - not even a hint of breathing. I felt terrible. We have vultures that do cleanup but for some reason I felt compelled to bury it. After I dug a proper hole in the woods I placed the trap at the edge of the hole and tipped it after opening it. The possum actually dropped into the hole and then, like greased lightning ran away faster than I've ever seen an animal of it's size move! Duhhhhhhh!

Thank you for the video. I liked the old traps that were easier to free the animals. This version trap had me concerned with catching an angry raccoon. Now I know.

I liked your idea best lol. Seemed the most safe. I didnt have strong so I improvised and used electrical tape that I twisted up to make string. A cigarette pack for the safety release. I think I did your style but the ghetto version. You can move out of Cleveland Ohio but I guess Cleveland never leaves you! By rocky the raccoon

Thank you for humane trap & release method. We use traps to capture injured animals- definitely not to catch and kill because they’re in my “space”
    Appreciate the video

Possums area great. They eat soooooo many ticks and are immune to rabies due to a low body temp. Very cool animals.

Great comment. I'm in a heavily wooded neighborhood of one and two acre lots in west-central Florida. We have deer, bears (on rare occasions), coyotes, foxes, raccoons, possums, etc. Those who love their cats keep them inside. Being able to observe these critters is wonderful in spite of the occasional inconvenience. Some of my neighbors want to get rid of every creature here that lives in the wild. I love having the wildlife and remind those neighbors of who was here first. I appreciate your input on the possums. I did not know that! Thanks.

Thanks for the good info... my situation... have a mama coon with 3 or so "toddlers". I caught the mama overnight and released her about 5 miles away the following morning. Gonna put the traps out again and hopefully catch 2 or more of her young, and then release them in the same area. If successful, What are the chances the mama would still be around for them to reunite? Like you said I didn't want to hold the mama in the cage for 24+ hrs waiting to catch her young to release together.

Lmao bro, having a beer by my fire and my trap went off and caught a raccoon. We been trying to land this rabbit that got lose from some kids, but instead it landed a Raccoon. I didn’t watch the video, but I used a hook that I would use to tighten anything in my truck and did what you did. Sure wish I seen this video the string would had been better, but it was released back into my yard and actually stopped right out of the cage stared at me then slowly walked away almost like a thank you for not killing it 🤷🏻‍♂️ I love how you mentioned your farm and from Ohio because I live in Eaton have a chicken farm and had this same issue.
