Nice video, I’ve been doing just the same with my clamps on a French cleat wall, same sort of clamp hangers, very efficient. Only difference is that I didn’t put my clamp hangers on backer boards, each of my clamp racks has its own French cleat so I’ve got more flexibility to move them around in the future. One suggestion about the video though, turn the music down! Appreciate you want something to fill the void that would otherwise be wood sawing, but the music got repetitive and was too loud. Cheers !

Great video. Nicely done. For any others looking to build their own French cleat wall... using spacer blocks between cleats for fast and consistent installation helped me install my cleats quickly. (Of course, double check with a level to be sure!)

Like it. Struggled with how to hang my clamps. I've got 11 bar clamps, 4 are 3/4 inch and heavy....I know I'll have to divide them up but this looks like a nice way to do it and not sacrifice a lot of space. Thanks for the time and sharing!
Thanks. Nice job. I probably would have screwed the strips on the back wall. I'm always thinking about whether I might need to tear it down to move it, or for another idea later. Glueing and nailing would make that hard.
If your shop is generating a lot of dust, I would consider fixing that asap. In my experience, having my tools on easily accessible open racks saves a lot of time over having them tucked away in drawers.
I mostly hang my clamps on the wall and dust shouldn’t be a big issue in a well ventilated shop with good dust collection. Not sure if I have ever seen someone store clamps in a closed cabinet before.
So perfect all of it. I like to try to get close of having half as many clamps but they sure look good now, all perfect, fine Video and up with the very best!
Very nice job making the clamp racks. I do have one question though, when mounting the cleat to the back why do you mount it lower rather then flush at the top of the clamp rack?

I believe the cleats were about 4” tall, 48” wide, and the spacing was about 5-5.5” so that I had more than enough room to easily slide in the piece I was hanging.

One question: I notice everyone is a fan of adding the plywood to the walls. My space already has drywall, so I see no need to put up plywood. Hit the studs with screws and run. Have you found any benefits to the wood backer other than aesthetics and higher impact durability?
Thank you! In my old shop I had put up 1/4” plywood for looks only. In our new shop we had just studs so we insulated and sheathed with 3/4” OSB. The one wall that has drywall we are also putting the OSB up which will provide a little more soundproofing.

Richard Illingworth hey thanks for the question. I don’t think adding a coat of poly would make it that much easier to keep clean. The backer was already very smooth so it doesn’t catch too much dust.
Or just make 2 spacers with a cleat on the back that hangs on the level above, only have to be a few inches wide. saves having to hold a 2-foot spacer each time..
Great job - liked & subscribed. I’ve just torn down my old French cleat wall as it was made from odd sized offcuts, and replaced it with equally sized and equally spaced French cleats. I’m definitely going to be making some of these clamp racks. Can I ask…. Is there a reason why you generally fix your French cleat hanger to the accessory a couple of inches down from the top? I’m glad you liked the video! I generally attach them a little lower just to keep the screws away from the top of the boards. Depending on the weight of what I’m hanging I may also add a second cleat towards the bottom as well so the load is carried by two cleats. Send some pics of the wall when it’s done!
Please please please change the music to something that is not mindnumbing repetitive music. You have great videos with great content. People are turning down the sound to kill the music but the can't benefit from your great editorials.

I noticed you using the circular saw track system, how do you like that vs a table saw? I'm debating on getting a new table saw but I tend to do a lot more cuts like you were demonstrating. Any thoughts here?
D Y I prefer the table saw for those longer rip cuts. But when my SawStop brake went off during the middle of a flooring project, I was very happy to have the Makita track saw. I think the only thing that I’m not crazy about it getting everything out of the cases in order to use the track saw, whereas the table saw is pretty much ready to go at all times.

I used 1/4” plywood which is 100% just for looks. There is not function to it at all. I’ve been thinking about pulling it off and going with 7/16” OSB so I can screw things to the wall easier.

I guess you don't need four brackets for two rows of F-clamps. Three would be enough if you faced the clamps into opposite directions. Just a suggestion...
How is the wall board dimension? what is the width of the narrow side and what is the width of the wider side? and what distances between the battens on the wall?
Does the piece at the bottom of the track saw guide to keep it perpendicular to the work come with the guide or is sold separately? Hey Stuart, thanks for your question. I am cutting the cleats at about 3 1/2" and I used 3/4" plywood just because I knew that I would be hanging up some heavy clamps. Not sure if I would go down to 1/2" ply or not.
Seems like WAY overkill . Glue alone (remember glue is stronger than the wood) with a few brads would hold up those clamps . Although you did give me some good ideas for my tool cabinet . Thanks for posting.
I agree that it's overkill, but I didn't have a lot of clamps at the time and knew that I was going to upgrade eventually. They do tend to get heavy the more you have, and the plywood is only 1/4" thick sheets. If it was 3/4" plywood I definitely would have used only glue and brad nails. Thank you for watching!

How does the Bosh Glide miter work for you. Seems like a great idea to me but I have read a few bad reviews stating that the glide arm mechanism is not accurate from the front to the back of the cut - about 0.1 inch difference.
Wood Junkie I’ve had no issues with mine. The saw was a little off right out of the box but once I spent some time adjusting it there have been no issues at all.
This might possibly be the dumbest question ever, but how did you locate the studs behind the plywood walls? My garage is the same but outside of the plywood seams, it's impossible to find the studs without at least some blank shots into the insulation.
Not a stupid question at all. Some stud finders will pick up the stud even through thin plywood. The sheathing on my walls is currently only 1/4” thick so the stud finder works. Before I put the plywood up I went around the room and put up a cheater strip at the top of the walls with the stud locations marked on it. Makes it a bit easier to locate a stud. Hope that helps.
Pure bond plywood has too many voids. It looks nice, but the voids make it weak for this kind of project. I used it for my French cleats and regret it.

Even in a clean house you still get dust build up. I keep all of my tools in tool chests except for things like my 6 foot level.

The plywood walls are only 1/4” (decorative use only) so I had to secure the cleats to the studs. Usually Brad nails and glue would be enough.

Purebond plywood has less voids and has a few more layers which keeps it more stable.

Use a 2-foot piece of 1x4 as a spacer block and you won't have to keep futzing around with the level.

Designer- Garb, if you work from the bottom up, gravity holds the spacer(s) in place.

I guess you don't need four brackets for two rows of F-clamps. Three would be enough if you faced the clamps into opposite directions. Just a suggestion...

Hey Stuart, thanks for your question. I am cutting the cleats at about 3 1/2" and I used 3/4" plywood just because I knew that I would be hanging up some heavy clamps. Not sure if I would go down to 1/2" ply or not.

How do you know where the studs are once covered with plywood
I attached a 1” strip along the top of the wall and marked where all the stud locations are. Super easy and out of the way.

Seems like WAY overkill . Glue alone (remember glue is stronger than the wood) with a few brads would hold up those clamps . Although you did give me some good ideas for my tool cabinet . Thanks for posting.
I agree that it's overkill, but I didn't have a lot of clamps at the time and knew that I was going to upgrade eventually. They do tend to get heavy the more you have, and the plywood is only 1/4" thick sheets. If it was 3/4" plywood I definitely would have used only glue and brad nails. Thank you for watching!
After you ripped the 5" strips, what did you set your table saw at to make the 45 degree cut and have 2 identical cleats?
Just under 2.5" to allow for the kerf of the blade. They don't necessarily need to be perfectly equal so you can just eye it up.

How does the Bosh Glide miter work for you. Seems like a great idea to me but I have read a few bad reviews stating that the glide arm mechanism is not accurate from the front to the back of the cut - about 0.1 inch difference.
Wood Junkie I’ve had no issues with mine. The saw was a little off right out of the box but once I spent some time adjusting it there have been no issues at all.
This might possibly be the dumbest question ever, but how did you locate the studs behind the plywood walls? My garage is the same but outside of the plywood seams, it's impossible to find the studs without at least some blank shots into the insulation.
Not a stupid question at all. Some stud finders will pick up the stud even through thin plywood. The sheathing on my walls is currently only 1/4” thick so the stud finder works. Before I put the plywood up I went around the room and put up a cheater strip at the top of the walls with the stud locations marked on it. Makes it a bit easier to locate a stud. Hope that helps.
Why wouldn't you start at the bottom then use spacers and lay the next cleat? Lot less fiddling with the level.
Dave Bear it’s really preference. I e seen it done different ways and I’ve even done it different way. This is just how I did this one.

Pure bond plywood has too many voids. It looks nice, but the voids make it weak for this kind of project. I used it for my French cleats and regret it.
Good to know. I have not had any issues with weakness yet so maybe I got the rate “good” pieces!

Jim Gott that would be a sheet of foam insulation. I use it to keep the blade far away from the table.
