YES, you guys. i was hoping to all hope that you would review this game. i am definitely picking this up. looks and seems like so much fun and the art is so good and described perfectly in the review. not sure if it is out in the US yet but it will be soon. thanks again.
I'm surprised I never heard of this game before, as I really like these kinds of games. It's art-style and atmosphere are just so wonderful and unique, and it has been in development for a long time. It was very clearly made with passion! I'll definitely get Candle when it releases.
DARK DAWN very true I sub to a bunch of switch related news/review channels but they are all very mainstreamed. No one I follow covers what this channel does, it is great
SwitchUp lol dude it's hard to keep up! I used to read a lot fantasy novels and stuff like that, but ever since I got the switch....those days are over
Great review. If you'd like some constructive criticism, I personally don't see the point of scoring graphics, sound, and value. You only need to tell us your opinion on those, and just tell us if it's a good enough game to buy. Individual scores on certain elements just seem a little unimportant and pointless? May be just me.
My thoughts: I’m torn. It can be used as a way to assemble a final numerical score, as you do, but some of it is so subjective. And a numerical score is not the best way to determine the value/enjoyment of a game, because it’s trying to quantify the subjective. Math it all up, as it were. I’ve been watching a number of your videos with the intention of watching them all - I just got my switch two days ago and am figuring out what I want to get - and I enjoy the depth you go into, but I can usually tell from the meat of your review whether it’s a game that will interest me or not before you ever get to the final tally. I feel like rating those categories is still a good thing, but maybe just have a 3-point rating for each one: Great (I really like it) - Okay (functional, but it doesn’t “wow" me) - Bad (I can’t believe it was released like this). Or spread it to five by adding: Good (Better than average) - and Meh (There’s better) to allow for a bit more grey areas when it doesn’t settle well on one of the core three. It seems most every SwitchUp video I’ve watched so far (and I've watched some without being logged in, so it’s more than it seems) the final score range mostly falls within 70-85. Have you figured out what your average game rating is? If it’s not near 50, then you are either really good at only reviewing games you enjoy, or something is skewed somewhere. Another thing that could be helpful is having a list of what the reviewers top 5 and bottom 5 favorite games of all time are below the “show more” line, so the viewer can compare tastes. For example, if you are someone that loves mostly hard-as-nails games or sports games, then you really likeing something, or really disliking something is put into perspective for the viewer. If they share tastes, good match - probable agreement. If not, then not.
Collin Burton Some excellent points indeed. Our original idea came from old magazines like Gamesmaster and PC Gamer. We just love a percentage score. We do tend to review games we think people will be interested which leans more toward "good" or "potentially good" titles. This is just because there is so much rubbish on the eshop we try and target reviews usefully. I agree that there will always be a subjective element but it's best to view SwitchUp reviews within their own bubble almost. When we review it's quite easy to say this element was clearly better or worse than those other 6 games we reviewed. Also in my head I'm scoring sections out of 10 and doubling. I really like the idea of a top 5 and bottom 5 scores it's an idea I've been wanting to implement for AGES but my main issue is the time to compile such a list. Really, I should have put all my scores into an excel to begin with. As it is, I'm going to have to head back and compile it. But yeah, that's a solid suggestion. Thanks for watching and commenting, it's really useful! Mark
