Whats even more crazy is how the Chargers are able to consistently draft world-class QBs to suffer 1 to 4. With the right coaching this team should've been one of the longest-running dynasties in sports. But no.
Argument for fast throws: If I were a defender, chances are good that the ball would ricochet off my mitt and a Charger would grab it. (after it took the paint off my helmet) I can imagine Receiver practice: Announcer: "Receiver pelting practice begins at 1:00. Those with the tip-of-the-football cross tattoo on their skin, i.e. The All-Star Receiver Club, will meet at 2:00."
Lions fan; need a Defensive analysis of both teams on this one. The Lions had so many bone headed coverages where they left three Charger WR's on one side of the field with only two defenders in the vicinity. In the one play at 14:00 you highlight we blitz inexplicably on 3rd down (AG is certified crazy) leaving only one corner guarding the outside receiver in man, and a deep safety playing center field to somehow cover trips left....losing my mind watching our defensive strategy. Our bad scheme set our players up for a bad day. And we have to disguise our blitzes better. As soon as we show blitz, Herbert was sending a hot WR directly into the void for easy completions all day. Painful to watch and see it repeated over and over again by our DC, AG. Herbert and Allen played a hell of a game to their credit. I didn't notice the hopping thing Keenan Allen was doing until you mentioned it, funny.
on that Khari Jones play (lol) one must assume the fly motion is either supposed to be kept home by the QB to occupy that flat defender OR there's supposed to be an alert for zone coverage....surely, because it seems like a straight man beater
I wonder if Herbert forcing the ball downfield has anything to do with all the ADOT talk last season and all that checkdown merchant stuff. Even Kellen was talking about emphasizing him being more aggressive downfield. Everyone was obsessed with saying “he’s got a cannon and he needs to use it!”
Me being a long armed guy I think the taller longer arm qb struggles with the passes that require trajectory. The shorter guys like Russ and Kyler seem to specialize in the trajectory passes because they're lower to the ground. So the arch has to be higher because it comes from lower. I definitely think the newer style of qbs make so many throws harder on themselves because they're use to bein able to get away with certain things due to their athleticism.
But, if I were a defender with a ball bulleting by fast enough to take the paint off my helmet, I might get a bit of my mitt on it but, more likely, that ball would ricochet off and a Charger would be there to pounce on it. Maybe receivers have to go through pelting practice and receive that point-of-the- football "X tattoo" on their skin from the pressure before they can truly be a member of the Chargers Receiver Club. 😃
Need to bring in Rivers to show Herbert that touch/anticipation. I usually agree that Herbert throws a bit harder than needed at times and would be better off tossing some layups to guys. Curious how someone like Keenan or Mike Williams compare catching passes from Rivers and now Herbert. To me it seems like going from Greg Maddux to Randy Johnson in baseball terms.
It does feel like Herbert locks onto Keenan and isn’t seeing the field as well. Not sure if it has to do with Mike Williams being out, or the O line struggling to protect without Linsley
Excellent analysis. I've been a Justin Herbert fans since his first game against KC four years ago, but he seems to force tight window throws over the easier, more open targets, even though the easier throws would result in more yards and touchdowns. You nailed it, he's making it more difficult than it has to be. Something he didn't do this under Pep Hamilton. He also seemed to have better touch back then.
@@anti-classist Best way to build that trust is to just throw 'em the ball when they're clearly the best option. Now that the Chargers season is likely over, might as well develop these guys for next year.
@James-100 lol and they been dropping the ball... qj is playing small and not using his body to create space... I'd rather throw a tight throw to Allen then QJ who has honestly looked bad.
Lions DB 21 only comes down that far on the play if Herbert fakes the bubble screen. Herbert throws that ball as soon as he sets his feet, about as fast as you could want
That play TD to Quentin Johnston was almost ruined by Zion the LG, we've been called for Inelgible man downfield a few times this year and from the one view he was almost in the endzone when Herbert released. smh
Think there might be a correlation with choice of throw to tipped passes? He’s 6th in the league with batted down passes, which doesn’t make much sense given his height. Could it be he’s trying to get the ball out quicker to protect it, harder to react and make a move?
ugh painful to watch but I needed to see it to judge it objectively. Only a couple true mistakes by the secondary, and not nearly enough pressure from anybody other than Hutchinson. Needed one play from the defense in the last 30 minutes and couldn't get it.
I watched a bit of Justin Herbert I think at Oregon? I just happened to turn on the game. After a few plays I thought, “Meh.” But I’ve always thought he was underutilized perhaps in college because you really never saw his arm talent until after the draft. (I can’t remember if I watched his combine or Pro Day. Maybe I’ll have to go look today to see if it’s out there.)
Herbert missing his WR2&3,TE1,Pro bowl Center, and hamstrung with a terrible head coach and likely worst defense in league. Nearly Entire Chargers offense was Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen.... They still put up 38 and nearly won against a SB contender for sure....Think about that
yep and were down 14... chargers toe to toe with mia dallas det and lost late to kc score wasnt reflective of the game ...chargers are a good team hope they have enough time to prove it
I feel he needs to change his throwing mechanics to make it more comfortable throwing with touch and accept the trade off of not having a god tier cannon arm equipped. That’s my armchair QB observation and a big fan of his so I hope he improves that cause he probably doesn’t trust his touch balls
@@slangsd his batted balls are already reduced from last year. He sidearmed it way too much last year, not so much this year, and the ball isn’t being batted down nearly as much this season.
He’s also not checking down any way near as much as last year. The few he’s had batted this year were pretty much all short yardage throws. His ADOT is much higher this season. Also like said above the ribs really changed his throw mechanics
After seeing this excellent breakdown, I can see the one thing Josh Allen and Herbert do that can lead to inconsistency and turnovers. They throw it with so much velocity that the ball is flat. Which gets to the target faster, but it’s easier to tracker and judge it then when you can put more touch and lead the wide out into the open window. I’m a big Herbert and Allen fan. But I think this is where their inconsistency really stems from
Thank you for calling out what I've been screaming into the void. Herbert is an incredible talent, but he makes throws harder than they need to be. Be it timing or just choice, this will come back to bite him.
I'd submit that he does it because he feels like he needs to make a play on every single down. When the defense held against the Jets, Herbie didn't need to be superman and only threw for 130 yards. After that game, I saw some garbage take on good morning football lambasting Herbie for not being an elite QB. The dude is amazing.

It does feel like Herbert locks onto Keenan and isn’t seeing the field as well. Not sure if it has to do with Mike Williams being out, or the O line struggling to protect without Linsley
I mean mike will and josh palmer are both out so I guess he doesn’t have the connectionwith the other wrs
@@tristant9309 yeah he is def building that trust with QJ
They jump and catch it at their face because he throws such a laser that it’s hard to read and gets there fast.
jumpers arent pluckers so i agree jumping is a hands thing it like begging to catch it imo
I think he has trust issues with some wr he is getting used to...
@TheQBschool is that TD at 18:32 not tick late? Seems like it creates an unnecessary INT chance as there's a ton of room between the 15-5 yard line?
It’s not, quit being a weirdo
He throws that high it’s getting picked.
Are you calling #1 Billie Jean because of his TD dance 🤣
Or the singing
Spends the first 3 mins on the interception Justin threw. I bailed at that point.
✌️
ugh painful to watch but I needed to see it to judge it objectively.
On 4th and one it s/b noted that that was the 8th attempt to score from inside the three yard line. Detroit stopped them COLD the first SEVEN attempts
Herbert missing his WR2&3,TE1,Pro bowl Center, and hamstrung with a terrible head coach and likely worst defense in league. Nearly Entire Chargers offense was Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen....
They still put up 38 and nearly won against a SB contender for sure....Think about that
yep and were down 14... chargers toe to toe with mia dallas det and lost late to kc score wasnt reflective of the game ...chargers are a good team hope they have enough time to prove it
oh and bad finger so no plays from under center...people are nuts saying lac is trash
How are you gonna upload a Herbert analysis before the king in the north, the goffather
I hate Staley bruh
Do you think Herbert goes through his reads too quickly? Or maybe does he lack anticipation?
Bro what 😂😂😂😂
I feel he needs to change his throwing mechanics to make it more comfortable throwing with touch and accept the trade off of not having a god tier cannon arm equipped. That’s my armchair QB observation and a big fan of his so I hope he improves that cause he probably doesn’t trust his touch balls
Touch passes will also help reduce his batted balls.
He just needs to learn to take some off his throws at times
After seeing this excellent breakdown, I can see the one thing Josh Allen and Herbert do that can lead to inconsistency and turnovers. They throw it with so much velocity that the ball is flat. Which gets to the target faster, but it’s easier to tracker and judge it then when you can put more touch and lead the wide out into the open window. I’m a big Herbert and Allen fan. But I think this is where their inconsistency really stems from
Herb is way more consistent, throws more completions, and protects the ball better than Allen
Thank you for calling out what I've been screaming into the void. Herbert is an incredible talent, but he makes throws harder than they need to be. Be it timing or just choice, this will come back to bite him.
yeah the guy with consistently one of the lowest Turnover play % makes throws harder than they need to be lmao
Check his ADOT for why his TO% is low.@@ChanningTretum
the man throws 8 contested fades a game, like jesus run a post or something creative
Herbert's career is being wasted in front of our eyes just like Rivers' because Dean Spanos will always hire the cheapest head coaches and, ultimately, you get what you pay for.
