This is quite a big deal! :o BTW Martin I'm Jandro from Barcelona, we met at Furtivos (Guy flying the foamie Eurofighter), you asked in the Q&A video but didn't have time to reply! Best regards! ;)
Hello I am interested in the Pioneer control unit that will be connected with Futaba 7108 sb via sbus 2. I wonder if: 1) it is possible to freely assign the outputs to each channel 2) if all channels are matching 3) is programming done only with the appropriate software and pc or also from a switch? Thanks Francesco Simoncioni
Pioneer is “straight output”, so it will always reflect the servo monitor in your Futaba radio. All channel asigning, matching, etc, is done in the radio…
Martin first of all thank you for the video. Iam powerbox user for many years now with only positive feat-backs. iam excited and disappointed at the same time. yes is a new product in a very compatible price BUT were is the support for the Spectrum users?
If running the Pioneer with an iGyro sat, how many total stabilized channels do I get, and with what limitations? I have a small model where this would be perfect, but need 6 stabilized channels in pitch + 4 in roll + 2 in yaw. (10 total, since two of the pitch channels and 2 of the roll channels are the same/delta)
Hi Janmb, I am curious what model has more servos on pitch than roll? Pioneer has 9 stabilized channels, 3 on each axis, for the amounts you are stating you would be better off with a Royal as I think its the only one to have enough channel outputs, even Mercury would possibly be lacking in servo sockets?
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC Thanks Martin. The model in question is quite small so a royal or any traditional PB would not fit I'm working on a foamie eurofighter, which has elevons, canards, rudder, and pitch/roll/yaw vectoring - of which I want it all stabilized 😎 In terms of size, the pioneer would been brilliant
When are you going to post an in depth pioneer tutorial so we will know whether it is worth it or nor or whether it will work for us. (As in will iGyro work with futaba radios etc.)
This is really neat and I have been watching PBS for a while. My next plane may very well be fully outfitted with PB systems. What is the battery used with the Pioneer?
I love all the Powerbox stuff but if there is no power regulation an no servo matching what can it do that a 14 channel receiver and an Igyro 3E cant do especially when using Futaba.
Hi Stephen. (sorry, long answer!) Think of this particular unit as a kind of middle step between a receiver and a more conventional full blown powerbox. Sure, it doesn't drop the voltage (which a lot of people have been wanting since all servos nowadays state speeds and torques at 8.4v) however all the other benefits are still there... Dual batteries, high power outputs, filtered servo signals, all with the reliability and redundancy of Powerbox. This is also reflected in the price... Your example: -14ch receiver (200€) -iGyro 3e (now replaced by iGyro 3xtra - 230€) Total: 430€ Thats for a setup with a single receiver and single battery, that can't handle powerful servos... Even if running the Futaba dual battery receiver, the manual actually recommends not using servos beyond 18kg torque - which is uselsss in many applications! Pioneer example: -Pioneer (200€) -iGyro SAT (100€), Total 300€, that gives you 130€ change to pick up a couple of receivers, and provides you with all the usual Powerbox guarantees, including dual battery, dual receiver, and all what's mentioned above... Based on that, my view is, Pioneer all the way... Oh, but yet, for Futaba users it sucks not being able to set everything from the radio and doing it all from a phone or tablet, however this is due to the Futaba radio software not being capable, not due to Powerbox not implementing it... Let me know your thoughts! Martin
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC Yes it would be a completely different way of setting up a plane at reasonable cost as adding an Igyro Sat would be half the cost of a 3Xtra Igyro, look forward to the next part of the video. Would be nice to see it setup with the BlueCom adapter using Futaba if you ever get a chance. Many Thanks.
I started with RC models when I was 13 years old and in my time I remembered gyroscopes we're only for helicopters, my first plane have only 4 channels controlled with a Futaba radio in AM, and in the field, we have to choose the signal to avoid interference with other planes in the air. But today even gyros are for planes is like the flight by wire of commercial and fighters planes. Amazing video thanks for sharing
So just that I understand correctly, it’s only going to put out the amount of voltage of what batteries are connected to it. So you can still run low voltage servos if needed?
Hi Matt, yes, you can still run any kind of servo, but always noting that the Pioneer will not drop the voltage (regulate), so if you are using low voltage batteries, you will be fine, but if using Lipo, you will be sending full voltage to the servos, in which case one of the current regulated Powerboxes may be a better option
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC I noticed 26D Rx voltage telemetry in my Core display said 6,3V and this was a LiFe giving 6,6V on my Fluke so a small drop there is.
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC Hi, yes fully charged battery, the volt came from my D26 receiver which is 0,3V lower than the Pioneer Voltage read from the telemetry on both devices. RX is connected vis P2 bus to Pioneer. No big deal. :)
Powerbox is basically a power distribution unit for the servos. It filters the signal, assures servos receive sufficient power, accepts dual battery, dual receiver, has redundant systems built in. It is basically a high power safety feature required by mostly all large models. They also make other things now such as transmitters, batteries but this is what they came from and are best known for.
Magic, the Srs systems are cool, as long as you watch your instructions, but I no were they are heading, and as long as its in a brown box, wife will think it's cheap😂
Hey Joe, this is not only the newest but its also the cheapest Powerbox out of their whole line up? I know that doesnt make the funds easier to obtain, but is at least a good reference and right direction..
I love your videos Martin, by far the best RC airplane and jet videos on TH-cam. You have a lifelong subscriber here!
Wow, thanks Scott!! Really appreciate it!!
Hi Martin, I would love to see a setup using the Futaba either 18MZ or the 32MZ.
Especially with receivers redundancy, I have no idea how that works and I'd love to do that
I currently run Jeti and am very excited about this working with my Jeti platform. Thanks for sharing!

It sure is looking that way! Can't wait to fully test it!
Can you do another video of this unit, showing installation, setup, and use. Really interested in this item.
Its already in the schedule, should be ready in about two weeks
GPS and gyro, can they used at the same time?
Yes
Great video mate, finally the 10k mate :)
Yihaaaa!!! Thanks mate!
Hawkeye Drones: Very well explained Martin as usual. Looking forward to the test drive verdict. 👍 Russ.
What to do of i got 6 Volt Servos?
Hi Martin,
On an Extreme Flight Extra 300 104 100cc, should i use a Pioneer or a Competiton SRS? My Tx is Core. I can match servos with my Core.
Either will work well, so whichever you like most. Just note the aileron matching will be with the Core in case of using the Pioneer
Very nice indeed😎. but this concept, isn't it the same that Jeti has been doing for a couple of years now?
