I saw an interview with the lead singer of Greta Van Fleet, and he was talking about his voice (very high). He said he adopted that style so he could “punch through” the incredible music just to be heard. I see Geddys early vocal style doing the same thing. As the bands sound mellowed, Geddy was able to back off and be more melodic in a lower register. He has a knack for “fitting” the music style with his voice. That versatility is impressive to me. Great reaction to a great song! Thanks!
Geddy and Alex told the story of how they were interviewing for drummers when Neil showed up with that kit in his car, parts of it sticking out the windows and such, set it up then blew them away. Neil was a hard worker. That’s how you excel.
There's a section of The Necromancer where I think Geddy is off the charts with his vocals...his "hard rock/metal" voice was vastly underrated, IMO. This is a great example.
One of my top three favourite Rush songs.. Get goosebumps everytime I watch this performance.. What a bunch of cool dudes.. HAIL RUSH!!!!!!!!!! btw, loooove my hero"s voice!
"Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more." Are the lyrics you're asking about these were written during Neil's Ayn Rand era. He mellowed those beliefs over the years as evidenced in the song "Presto" from the album by the same name. Another song I love.
@@rubicon-oh9km In Presto Neil has dropped into his heart from Ayn Rand's "unfettered self-interest" cold intellectualism to a new compassion. "Swimming out to sea, so deep I could never touch bottom, what a fool I used to be." He goes on to say "If I had a magic wand, I'd set everybody free." Rand would be turning over in her grave.
Did I not tell you his voice would grow on you? 😁 This is from their first album together, Fly By Night. Which if you don't have Fly by Night on the list, you should. Although, I would think you heard that before as I believe it had/has radio play. I could be wrong. This song is our first look into Neil's mind. At the time, Neil had been reading a lot of Ayn Rand and she became a huge influence for him over the next couple albums, Carress of Steel and 2112. They were just babies here. So sweet and innocent. Lol
They had some really interesting fashion choices back then I think they were trying to figure out their identity which led to the infamous kimono picture. LOL! I'm just happy they finally figured out that they could dress the way they wanted
Great reaction! This is from 1975. They were in there mid 20’s here! They actually recorded this in a high school gymnasium that was staged for a play the school was doing. They were pretty broke back then, and still buying new equipment, hence Neil’s drums but Geddy’s now got his Rickenbacker bass! Still driving around ina rented station wagon playing at least 250 shows a year! When Geddy and Alex 1st saw this clip, they didn’t even remember shooting it! Enjoyed this! Be well and God Bless… from Texas!!

LIVE FOR YOURSELF THERE'S NO ONE ELSE MORE WORTH LIVING FOR BEGGING HANDS AND BLEEDING HEARTS WILL ONLY CRY OUT FOR MORE Written in an era when you could simply say what you thought in a song and no one could stop you
Anthem is an Ayn Rand Novel and likely a source of inspiration for the lyrics. A non-fiction option for many of the same ideas can be found in Ayn's Virtue of Selfishness. In part it's about the negativity around selfishness and that in fact it is necessary for survival. The philosophy behind a line like "Live for yourself there's no one else more worth living for" also produces lines like 'put your oxygen mask on before helping others'.
Neil wrote these lyrics based on the book by Ayn Rand, called "Anthem". It's a very right-wing (circa 1938), Libertarian-infused novel that Neil had appreciated, back in his early, "fight-or-die" days. Of course, Rush dedicated 2112 to Any Rand as well.
@@Marcus2Y1Y1Z2 - Can you give any references, where Neil "denounced libertarianism"? And that’s when I evolve now into . . . a bleeding-heart Libertarian. That’ll do.” This is not what I'd describe as a "denunciation". This isn't really a live version. The audio is from the studio version of the song. This would be an actual live version from around that time: th-cam.com/video/W6xhHRVoDqg/w-d-xo.html
In an interview video, Geddy spoke about how they were writing their early music in keys that made him have to sing in the highest octave of his range, which actually spans three octaves! They worked it out so he could sing in a more comfortable way. 🤣
I saw a comment that referenced Ayn Rand. Yes, Neil was heavily influenced early on. Even as late a Tom Sawyer, there were libertarian vibes. I don't think they ever abandoned it fully. They still knew that the "system" was a play toy for elites. As far as I'm going to go on their politics. Hahahaha
Neil wrote these lyrics at a time when he was very much a fan of Ayn Rand. That will explain a lot of his lyrics from this album and the next two or three. He got away from her philosophies a few years later.
That's not live Anthem, just the official video for the studio version. Still rocks, tho! The live version is much more Metal, though. Listen to the live version from 1976, All the World's a Stage. That is a face-melter. By the way, I think that live version of Anthem, from 1976, is one of the best vocal performances by Geddy, from his early days, ever! You gotta hear it! Rocking!!
Justin at that time, Geddy was considered rocks best screamer! The line in question is >>> (Live for yourself, there's no one else More worth living for Begging hands and bleeding hearts Will only cry out for more) I know you don't want to get political, but you asked...All 3 members would call themselves libertarian. (basically, do whatever you want as long as you don't hurt anyone) Something for Nothing is another great early track! In short, you want it, WORK FOR IT!!! I'm sure you can relate to that. Also look for Rock Icons, an interview with Geddy and all the bass guitars in his collection. I highly reccomend you find and watch it!
@@JustinPanariello Alex's solo's are worshipped lol. Seeing you talking through it was sacrilege. He certainly is one of the greatest guitarists to have ever lived & i believe deserves your attention, ears wide open! 👍🇬🇧

Hahahaha

But it is political

Neil wrote these lyrics at a time when he was very much a fan of Ayn Rand. That will explain a lot of his lyrics from this album and the next two or three. He got away from her philosophies a few years later.

That's not live Anthem, just the official video for the studio version. Still rocks, tho! The live version is much more Metal, though. Listen to the live version from 1976, All the World's a Stage. That is a face-melter. By the way, I think that live version of Anthem, from 1976, is one of the best vocal performances by Geddy, from his early days, ever! You gotta hear it! Rocking!!
Or the Capital Theatre show. Geddy's roar on 'wrought' is just 🤯!

How ironic that Geddy Lee plays the lowest bass guitar and sing the highest range voices around !

Justin at that time, Geddy was considered rocks best screamer! The line in question is >>> (Live for yourself, there's no one else
More worth living for
Begging hands and bleeding hearts
Will only cry out for more)
I know you don't want to get political, but you asked...All 3 members would call themselves libertarian.
