  • Blues story teller Kirk Fletcher chats about his youth and playing gospel music. Kirk talks about The Mighty Clouds of Joy's guitarist off and on from the late 70's at least until the late 80's Chalmers "Spanky" Alford, as well as Local hero Ronald Moore and his big brother Walter Fletcher. So clap you hands and shout YEAH!

I'm a guitarist at church and deep down inside I wish I was a black gospel guitarist, i'm so jealous lol. I try to get the band feeling the rhythm but popular worship music guitars are all ambient, dreamy and delayed. they can't stop me from hitting that neck pickup and slow jamming that gospel rhythem when they bust out the hymns though lol. God bless brother, keep it up.

I feel that man, some problem here. All the clicks and tracks that we have to play to now kill me, even trying to get the team to swing won't happen😂 I just wanna play like Spanky but I'm stuck playing a pedalboard instead🤦🏻‍♂️😂

@@hhh8670 Use the place that God has put you in and do the best you can to his glory and honor. I'm in the same boat with you and I too want to play in a gospel quartet band but I know that I need to use what God has given me and show him that I can do it to his glory and honor and with a grateful heart and if it is his will and in his timing, someday I may play in a quartet band. God bless

You described that so well. Modern worship music is not only awful to play but it also makes me feel uncomfortable, and not in a good way. Not sure what it is. Those old style gospel music is really fun to play and lift my spirit up immediately. Oh well, give me that old time religion, it's good enough for me.....

I was playing with quartets back in the late 80s, early 90s and we opened for the Mighty Clouds, Sensational Nightingales, and Slim and the Supreme Angels at local shows. Still playing in church but now people want the new contemporary stuff that's basically a chorus from start to finish. There's nothing like the classic quartet sound!!

intro is just vamping on a D7, the bass kind of implies an A for a brief moment. the end bit is the same stuff, also D7-ish, but broken down... at 3:13 it's a D9 (1st inversion, so basically F# half diminished, but with high a D on the 1st string), 3:21 is the more usual D9 shape, 3:27 goes from Dsus4 back to D, i can't figure out the voicing exactly but it's something like the D9 grip at 3:13, then a simple C triad (open F shape, 10th fret on 4th string, 9th on 3rd, 8th on 2nd), and then a D triad (open A shape, 7th fret on 4th, 3rd and 2nd string)
