This video was tremendously helpful this week while I was in the NYC area from DC. I was booked as a background actor for a two day shoot in Midtown Manhattan. However, my hotel was in Maspeth, Queens. My call time each day was 4 o’clock in the afternoon for 10-12 hour overnight shoots.
Although I had my car, I really did not want to hassle with the idea of driving into the city at that hour and try to find parking, not to mention the expense of a parking garage. I watched this video and thought that I might give it a try. I downloaded the app and enter the route info. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could catch a bus across the street from my hotel that took me directly to Queens Plaza subway station, where I could catch a train to my destination in Midtown.-Bryant Park. One bus, one train. How easy would that be?
I must mention that I am a 70-year-old woman with no experience using Metro. Despite the easy route and excellent information in this video, I was very apprehensive. I was concerned about getting off at the correct stop, taking the correct train in the right direction - uptown or downtown, but mostly I was concerned for my safety. I was fairly certain I could get to my destination safely, but I wasn’t at all certain as to how safe my return trip would be. I decided I would go for it.
After downloading the app, I entered my route, and it was displayed step-by-step from beginning to end. The most difficult part was trying to find $2.75 in change until I can get a MetroCard.
The first day was a breeze. Although I had the instructions and directions from the app, I did ask a few people, including the woman working at the subway booth. I’ve heard over the years that New Yorkers are unfriendly and dismissive. If I had a question, I would ask someone, and they were very friendly and helpful and providing the information I needed. Did Metro transit women was especially helpful providing step-by-step instructions as to using the MetroCard machine. It was covered in the video, but I didn’t remember the details at the time.
We wrapped it 630 the following morning. The sun was up and I decided to take the train and bus back to the hotel. I felt that I could safely do that and it was not a problem at all. I was advised by fellow actors that I should not use this motive transportation if we were to rap at midnight or early morning hours. I still had one more long day and night i’m shooting, and I thought about driving and just biting the bullet for the parking garage.
When the time came, I decided to used MTG a second time. What I did forget was that I could use my metro card on the bus and it would automatically transfer me to the subway. I’m not remembering that, I scrounged up another $2.75 and change the second day and use that, in addition to the metro card for the subway. I only say scrounge up,because coins were hard to come by at that point. I wish I had realized the metro card would’ve been sufficient. But, next time.
The second night of shooting wrapped around two or 2:30 in the morning. I nixed the idea of public transportation back to the hotel, and used another mode of transportation that I had not yet used and experienced-ride share. Nope. I’ve never used Uber or Lyft, but I did that night. I downloaded the Lyft app, and my return trip from Midtown to my hotel was a seamless 15-20 minute trip. It was a little more than $2.75, but I did not worry about my safety.
I would suggest watching this video several times. If you attempt public transportation in the city, I would suggest watching the video again after your first trip. You will catch things that you missed the first time around, but will prove extremely helpful for the next time. As much as I like the convenience of using my car to get around, I was extremely impressed by how easy it is to use Metro transit and how efficient - time wise and financially- it is.
Oh, and by the way, the buses and the subway trains show and call all of the stops before you arrive at those points. They really have taken the guesswork out of it.

The select bus is different than an express bus, the sbs is still $2.75 and I felt bad for others since you got on a sbs but didn't mention it, but an express bus is usually going from another borough to Manhattan, it's just an alternative to the subway (and a more expensive way)

Sarah loved your videos and they were great for our trip to New York. You just need to add for people like me from outside the New York [and country in my case] that when you buy a subway card you need to put in the area code! This left me confused and nobody seemed to be able to help me, so eventually I purchased the card from the officer in booth at the subway. Another person gave me the tip to just enter 00000 [five zeros] and this would work as the area code. I did not try this but if you tried this and it is successful then it would be great to have this tip in a video for other travellers.

Just to be clear, "public transportation" refers to methods of transportation managed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, an NYC agency; it doesn't include LYFT or CitiBike.
Also, NYC (and by this, I mean "Manhattan") is relatively easy to navigate regardless of how you choose to get around. The portion of Manhattan north of 14th Street is a huge grid. "Streets" run in the east-west direction and "avenues" run in the north-south direction.

One thing I realized, pls listen carefully to whatever the announcement in the station or train. Sometimes they simply skipped certain stations and if you not aware, you could missed your stop.

Thank you for teaching me about public transportation. It’s stuff because I use Uber to go to a airport or elsewhere if I want to go to for excanple like NYC to Washington DC I will take megabus or greyhound to go to my destination. Think about the transportation before you go anywhere far or close by taking a bike or a car

    Hello, me again.
I need to point out that there should be a good overview at a start that trains run mostly uptown and downtown since Manhattan island is mostly North-South oriented (not exactly) so it is a simple way to figure out what is a direction where tourist/newcomer want to go. Since tourists have no real sense of distances in NYC, 3$ for 30 minutes bike can be really challenging: "How long can I ride and what can I see for 30 minutes?". Some example would be really, really useful. Just to make some good sense of a size of a City. Besides, using stairs in Subway has some unwritten rule: Those who are not in a hurry are on a right side so that left side of a stairs is free for speedy ones. That doesn't apply in L.A.... never saw that. Otherwise, very nice to see you. Bye!

When I take a quick look at the single ride tickets, this is what I see:
    METROCARD
    Single Ride
    No subway...
It actually says No subway-Bus transfer but I still find it kind of funny.

Please all be careful when going on subway first time, if anyone is behind you saying they are rushed for time when you are trying to get your ticket, stay away its probably a scam, got caught on 49th St Station last weekend

It happens on all major subway systems and certainly in London where I live. Those who don't want to pay will squeeze in behind you at the last minute.

I didn't watch this entire thing, but I would add:
    1) tourists should keep in mind that there is a gondola/funicular/tram that travels from the East side of Manhattan (around 3rd Ave and 59th Street) across to Roosevelt Island. This is part of the 'subway system' and as such all you need to do is swipe your Metrocard to ride the Roosevelt Island tram (ideally at night) for a spectacular view of the city. Then just take the tram right back to Manhattan.
    2) every weekend in NYC, our subway system has major construction and rerouting of train lines. And despite lots of signage and announcements regarding this, the information is often VERY CONFUSING, even for local NYers who live in NYC. As such, add extra time for train travel on the weekend, and learn to be PATIENT.
    3) if you get lost and need help within the MTA system, I can GUARANTEE that if you ask three different people for help...how to get from Point A to Point B, that you are going to receive THREE DIFFERENT ANSWERS either because a) some of the people trying to help you really don't have the answer but they want to try and seem helpful b) because of the weekend subway changes I mentioned under #2, people may not realize that a particular subway line they suggest you take is in fact not running on that particular day and c) there may in fact be more than one way to get from Point A to Point B.
So.... if you need help getting from Point A to Point B, but you are totally lost and utterly confused, what should you do??? 1) study the street map and the subway map to get a GENERAL proximity of where you want to go. Remember, you don't need the subway to get you EXACTLY where you want to go, so long as you can get CLOSE ENOUGH to then either walk or take a short taxi ride. 2) If you must ask someone for advice, it's best to try and ask an MTA employee versus a regular NYer.

This vid needs an update now that the MTA has decided to join the 21st century with 'tap to pay', either via a bank card or mobile phone. This method of payment has long been a feature of the London underground and other transport options in the capital city. Travelling around London and surrounds is entirely cash free.

  • @bkmex
    @bkmex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You still need to pay for the select before getting on whether you have a pay per ride or unlimited card😭 also if you pay with exact change on a local bus, the paper transfer can only be used on another bus, other than that, great video and you showed great points throughout! :))
