    let's not forget that sometime prior to walking out to that disgusting display Jim had also been informed of his dear friend Denny. dying at the track earlier, ... despite what Jim said, I still believe that the infamous line he delivered was still him showing supreme restraint and control. The pack of arseholes label was a fraction of what the drunken mob deserved...

    The last Bathurst I ever watched start to finish... and the best. After this year the race turned into a guaranteed excuse for the bogans to feel good about "Aussie V8's", while being too dumb to realise that the cars' "important bits" are all foreign anyway.

    Jim Richards got it pretty right I reckon. It certainly wasn't the Nissan's fault it one. Would have loved to have seen the race finish in the dry it would have been very interesting, but being a lap up you'd think the Nissan would have won it anyway. But that's racing!

    • @jeffrey8361

      Lap up because everyone knew the rain was coming so pitted for wets. The Nissan team thought with their 4WD they didn't need wets so kept going but foolishly crashed big time, no way they should have won, you drive to the conditions

    • @hon3yweed
      @hon3yweed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      isn't it always like that? If the red flag comes out the last lap counts which means they won. These are the rules and if you want to cry about that then you are childish. Look at the Nürburgring 24h 2016, there were cars stuck in snow. When they restarted the race they placed the cars how they were one lap before the red flag. How else would you want this to be ruled? Try to find out who was where at the time of the red and then decide by that? That was purely down to luck if you were in the area of snow or not. You do realise that that would be very unfair?

    • @Zonda1996
      @Zonda1996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That’s a terrible analysis that refuses to look at the conditions. Even without the SC and pit time, the GTR was still well clear of the next competitor. Look at the condition of the track when the race was flagged and tell me the cars on wets would’ve fared any better.
      If it wasn’t flagged there the race would’ve finished with the entire field contributing to that pileup after Forrest’s Elbow. The rules weren’t made to keep the GTR in the contest and it certainly never needed assistance in gaining its victories.

    Not to condone the crowd's behavior, but I for one couldn't believe they stopped the race, and a driver that didn't manage to keep control was given the win. Conditions weren't that different to 1987, in fact the track wasn't even blocked like it was then. Right call would have been to deploy the pace car.

    I know the rules regarding a red flag but I think they should review them. It doesn't sit right with me that a wrecked car can be declared the winner. What if Richards car caused the red flag in a massive pile up like the 81 race? He'd still get the chocolates.
    If you can't drive it into victory lane due to your own ineptitude of crashing your car - i'm sorry you shouldn't be rewarded for it. Just my view.

    • @indyandherjones
      @indyandherjones 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The amount of surface water there - and Richards' car damage - was to blame for him crashing there. Not his driving skill. He didn't cause the red flag, he was merely a victim of it. Plus, the 1 car was a full lap ahead of the next car.
      The point of rolling back the results due to the red flag is to undo what caused the red flag (and also any incidents caused by it) to make the results fair. I don't see how awarding the win to the 1 car wasn't fair.

      To put it bluntly, the GT-R is NOT 4WD, it's actually RWD until the computer detects slipping on the tyres, where it becomes an AWD. The way the ATTESA system works is that when it detects slippage, the computer transfers power to the other wheels.
      Of course with the R32 being the first car to feature the ATTESA-ETS system, it's not a perfect system. But technologically, the Nissan Skyline GT-R was completely lightyears ahead of the aging Sierra and Commodores.

    The one and only place on the track where laps and times are recorded for the final result is the start/finish line. Once a race is red flagged, perhaps even from the very moment of a red flag incident though I'm not sure of that detail, no subsequent line crossings are recorded. They can't make judgements like, "but this driver who didn't crash passed that other driver who was stopped in the crash." The result can only go by each drivers last crossing of the start/finish line before the red flag.
    So, it was never going to be Dick Johnson's race win because his final green flag crossing only brought him up to equal completed laps with Jim Richards, and Jimmy did them in less time.

    • @anfnifarr
      @anfnifarr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible that the red flag was 'counted back' to the time of the incident that caused it. Otherwise it'd be too easy for a corrupted official to put a crash affected race under a full-course yellow just long enough to let his 'silent partner' in the race pass the previous leader. If a crash merits a red flag, it should be called then and there.

      Jeffrey Arthur it wasn't a 4wd. It was an AWD that had it disconnected. It was essentially a fwd car. Surely you can't be that stupid to figure that out

      @@aussiefirie you're the stupid one. The GTR has a centre diff as well as a transfer case. It drove all four wheels with torque split 40% font 60% rear. It wasn't disconnected. The GTR also had 4 wheel steer. Gibson Motor Sport disconnected that because it was to hard to get a decent set up

    • @woopimagpie
      @woopimagpie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@colinpenrose8275 Nope, wrong again. Fred Gibson and Mark Skaife have both repeatedly stated in interviews that the GTR ran in rear wheel drive most of the time once they got it fully sorted out. You may remember when the GTR was first introduced it broke a lot of driveshafts? This was because with the locked diffs they ran on the racecar the drive system would "bind" when running in full 4WD, load the shafts up and break them because with the locked diffs there was no slippage. They had the ability to shift some drive to the front wheels, but they only ever did this for race starts and in the wet, otherwise the shafts would break.
      Gibson Motorsport removed the 4 wheel steer function as you say, but they also significantly altered the drive system for the racecars too, it was quite different from the road cars. aussiefirie is essentially correct, the only part he got wrong was about it being fwd. It was rear drive most of the time.

LOL, what a legend Still, I understand why the crowd was dirty- the GTR's were a totally different platform with some serious advantages. Really, the race officials were at fault, they needed to allow the RWD V8 guys some more room to move with engine mods to make it all fair against the 4WD turbo Skylines. Fuck, the GTR's were even 4WS and all. Even the Sirreas should have been allowed more hp when the Skylines hit the scene, they were RWD too. I reckon if the V8 guys were allow 358 cubes like the NASCAR guys and the Fords allowed more boost and cubes everyone would have been happy. Maybe a 100 shot of gas and a 20lbs bottle that has to last all race, THAT would have been interesting... ;)

      It's a bit of a late comment but I'd thought i'd touch on this anyway considering I've experienced the flaws with the 4 wheel steer system. Effectively it's fantastic for low speed corners with no worry of the back end getting loose on you. Problem with the system itself is once the back end lets loose it is extremely easy to over correct and even if you do it does jack sh!t. Effectively you try to tell the front tyres to go left to counteract the over steer but the back tyres still want to go right. Which causes the car to snap violently in the opposite direction.
      I had this when I went around the corner in the wet with my R34 GTT with the hicas system. Over corrected slightly and proceeded to snap back in the complete opposite direction that I wanted the car to go.

    The Nissan, and I have had a few of them was a four wheel drive vehicle, just like the Ford Sierra. In the wet a four wheel drive vehicle is way ahead. In the dry the four wheel drive is heavier and there loses its advantage. Do any of you know what you are talking about. I have the advantage of sixty five years of driving and my body is still competitive.

    • @woopimagpie
      @woopimagpie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely incorrect. 4WD will have an advantage everywhere, just ask Audi. Their Quattro rally cars were significantly faster regardless of the surface when they were first introduced, and held their advantage easily until other manufacturers started developing lighter mid-engined 4WD cars. Even on the tarmac rallies they totally smashed the 2WD opposition.
      When Audi withdrew from rallying they took their 4WD tech to touring car racing in Europe, where they also had a significant advantage and enjoyed many successes. In 1996 Audi A4 Quattros were entered in the British, Belgian, Spanish, Australian (Super Tourers) and South African Touring Car series - and won them all! 4WD was subsequently banned because it gave too much of an advantage.
      In most race categories there is a set weight limit that the cars cannot be under, most race cars are built too light and carry ballast to bring them up to the required category weight so the supposed extra weight of a 4WD system isn't even a factor. Even in categories where the 4WD cars are heavier the increased traction and grip balance easily outweighs the extra weight, the GTRs in 1992 ATCC are a perfect example of this. They were the heaviest cars in the field by 250kg and yet they still took 1st and 2nd in the championship easily.

    • @slickstrings
      @slickstrings ปีที่แล้ว

      Further, the sierras were not 4wd, the skyline had an intelligent 4wd torque split system, and while having a heavier 4wd system, they were able to make better use of tyre life by pushing power through yhe front wheels and not just frying the backs like the sierras did.
      Also, much of the additional weight by this stage was success ballast, added because whining sooks like dick johnson couldnt win against gibsons slylines, despite dick having the fastes sierra in the world.

      If you want to have a racing series that runs under international rules then you need to bring an appropriate machine.
      Ford did it with the sierra as did nissan.
      Some teams used the rules to their full advantage.
      I know I would.
