He does not. He agrees. Brian is talking about Mack, the sound engineer. Mack has the best drum sound not because he plays the drums better than Roger does but because he gets the best out of Roger's drumming.
Brian May would have to be the nicest, most unaffected person in Rock & Roll ever. I don't think I've ever heard him say a bad word about anyone & he always presents as a very sincere man. They say "don't meet your heroes because you'll be disappointed" but Brian is the only person that I don't think this would apply to. Don't get me wrong, I love all the boys but there's something incredibly special & down to earth about Dr May :)

When Roger told Brian to shut up, you could tell they were pissing about as friends do. But what Brian said about Mack having the best drum sound in the world was a bit of a shitty thing to say, especially as Roger was sat right next to him.
A Kxnd Of Mxgic 🤦♀️ He wasn’t saying Mack’s the best drummer. Mack doesn’t even drum as far as I know. He was talking about the sound Mack gets production-wise from Roger’s playing. And Roger agrees with him that Mack is great at what he does.

@@heatherqualy9143 Yeah Brian was obviously talking about it from a production standpoint. I don't think people realize how much a producer can influence a band's sound. It has nothing to do with anyone's skill as an instrumentalist. He made Brian playing the Red Special sound different than it had before too. Same with John's bass. I love Mack's sound. He was the perfect producer for Queen at that point in their career.

My favorite thing about this interview is that-despite obviously being tired and not that fond of interviews anyway-you can really tell how much affection Brian and Roger have for each other. Hard to believe that next spring will mark 50 years since they met!

Observing Queen, I noticed a respect by eachother for eachother....no one, especially & including Queen's front and, tried to outshine or over play their instruments...deferring to each one's talent. They were spectacular. None of them got caught up and destroyed by drugs and as Roger pointed out, kept their egos in check. Bravo!

Mack was their sound engineer...he is NOT and NEVER has been a drummer. He "produces" or "engineers" the best drum sounds for studio recording. That's all Brian was saying, and Roger knew that very well.
