Basic refresher done entertainingly, delightful.
Random additional: Chords are built on thirds, knowing this, you can arp any chord on 1 string by knowing the third patterns.
In diatonic Circle of 5ths (also known as Circle of 4ths if you go the other way; each 4th becomes the counter clockwise key):
In M (major) and m (minor) thirds:
4th and 1st chord is MmM,
5th mmM,
2nd, 6th, 3rd are mMm,
7th is mmM.
This same pattern 4152637 is the notes as applied over the circle of 5ths (put 1 on c and get FCGDAEB, the key of C).
It is the basic guitar tuning (watch that 2nd string though), and the pattern of the 7 string long, 3 notes per string pattern.
4152637 is also the sharpest mode to the flattest mode: Lydian, Ionian, Myxolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, and Locrian.
I hope this puts some dents in some folk's grey matter.

Music theory is a set of tools, NOT a set of rules. Great lesson man.
In the specific case of the bride song, I believe that the first note is the fifth of the second note, instead of the second note being a fourth of the first note. The key of the song is the second note, so one could really think about the first note as being a very short intro, like the happy birthday song.

i love your content , just got exposed to it , i for one , know how to read notation but on a very basic level(when i compose i have to ) , i started learning guitar when i was about 15 , like 14 years ago , i know a lot of stuff , but when i watch your vids i always feel like i m learning a lot even with shorter vids like this one.
and i totally agree that knowing theory will just improve everything and will bring someone couple of levels up , unfortunately alot of guitarists that are self taught usually skip the whole theory learning and when they play it's easy to play,
i had a friend like this he was a master shredder but it was hard for him to come up with something or improvise, and most stuff that he did come up with sounded very derivative and lacked any originality . sorry for the long comment , Tl;dr theory will improve you in any way possible

I have to say that phrygian dominant or the Byzantine scale are my favorite. And a lot of it is because the minor second and the major third. That major third can definitely sound evil in context.

My parents considered sending me to music school when i was a kid, even though i had no thing for music back then.. Now they are thinking that would have been a bad idea.. It's cool that i got to learn it on my own through struggle, trial and error, but most importantly with passion. Having guys like Shred really helps a lot of people out. If i went to music school i would have probably dropped it because i would have been forced to learn it, and it s quite complicated at first. But learning it through those entertaining videos made it really easy. Thanks, Shred!

(this is for shred and everyone in the shred horde that does pushups)I think I saw shred doing knuckle pushups in a prior video, and I thought that was great. I thought about how much regular pushups destroyed my wrists and why I switched to only knuckle pushups or really anything but flat-hand on the ground, because I would like to do them for the rest of my life. I personally believe fingertip pushups are to be avoided by musicians at all costs. As you get tired, your muscles can't hold the finger joints in tension, and soon the joints are what is taking the strain, and it's random and you can blow out a finger joint(knees in skiing, those poor people ouch, saw that about every time going skiing), or several. it's not worth it unless maybe you are Django fret style with a jerry Garcia pickhand style.

If I wanted to get more into classical style music, what's your top five pieces/composers? You mention Arnold Shoernburg(?)a lot and the pieces you've shown seem pretty dope. But there's just so much out there I don't know where to begin.

Hey Shred, good video but I have a criticism. You didn’t explain raising and lowering the fifth for diminished and augmented well. For example, how much should the fifth be raised/lowered to have a C augmented/ diminished triad.

Shred Oh I know how hard that is, but I just wanted to give that small bit of constructive criticism because I honestly am still confused about that.
I don't get it. You say "you're kind of screwed in music theory if you can't read any notes". However, everything in this video that follows that statement requires absolutely no ability to read music notation. I learned how to read sheet music many years ago but I've had so little use for it that the knowledge has completely left me.
Early on, I learned to play the guitar mostly by ear. I had a guitar player friend who showed me how to play a few of my favorite songs that consisted mostly of power chords and I basically expanded from there, again pretty much all by ear. Being blessed with a good ear was a huge benefit to me during those days. At that point I knew how to make the sounds but I couldn't have told you any of the chords or scales that I was using, I just knew where to put my fingers. Later on, I learned exactly what it was I was doing when I started studying music theory and learned about intervals and chord/scale construction.
At this point I know the pentatonic, blues and diatonic scales like the back of my hand and I'm pretty good with the harmonic minor scale as well. I have mastered the diatonic triads and triad arpeggios and if I take the time and think about it, I can find the intervals to create the more extended chords from there. This is something I'm still working on. More importantly, I understand the intervallic relationships between all of these things and how they are constructed from the major and sometimes chromatic scale.
The point is learning music theory has made me an immensely better guitar player, yet I don't know how to read sheet music at all. As I stated in the comment section of one of your other videos, I believe it all depends on ones goals. My goals are to write, record and perform my own music and I've always found it fairly easy to learn other people's music by ear and/or watching the artist or other people play that music. Because of this, I've never felt the least bit "screwed" by not being able to read music. However if my goal was to be a session player, I would be all but totally "screwed".

Our music teachers would past out whatever music sheets for songs we had
to learn....but after I learn the songs. it was more of sort of Guide..i didnt stair
at every damn note every time we played a song....especailly while marching in parades or football games.( night time) witlh little 6 x 8 music scores...FFS.
I was wearing SHADES half of the time while marching in parades..
I couldnt see Jackshiet of the music scores....too busied trying not
to step in HORSE SHIET...lmao
( I knew the song by heart..just all the songs i play , now)
At the end of the day,..i still had to MEMORIZE and know the songs be heart..PLAY By EAR...becuase in LIVE playing...drummers , other band members, or I myself...Miss Beats..( its not the same as playing with DAW or drum machine)..And as if I was clip music scores to my guitar playing a metal
band...jumping and posing...ect ( stage man ship)
And as if my classical guitar teacher or marching band techers are going to teach me...Seek and destroy, High way to hell, Number of the Beast, Running with the Devil, ..ect MUSIC I grew up playing...I simply FIGURE Them out BY EAR...QUICKER ( or lack of music scores to begin with)
I can read music ....I still figure songs by EAR....Most of the songs on tabs
or on ultimate guitar are WACKED...simply beuase some musicians DIDNT
LEARN DIFFERENT scales....Substitute chords in and out..aside from
the melodic min or Harmonic min scales...So they try to make everything
FIT into ONLY what they know....
Example...the C HARMONIC MAJOR scale ( ion b6) is not COMMONLY TAUGH any more ( Ab) ..it's not the same as A Harmonic min ( aeo , maj7) ( G#)
example... F lydian b3 is NOT the same as F lydian #2...
or A Harmonic min b2 or melodic min b2 ( Bb) (aka N6)
You can also apply is after the MAJORS TONIC...
In other words....C Harmonic min b2 or melodic min b2 while over C MAJOR
the Db chord or note...
other lessons...such as Ab lydian #2, #6)...it's C Double harmonic min
vamp over C MAJOR...
If you didnt learn the different scales....those Ab or G#....or Bb
notes will Fu$k your sheit UP....Some people will try to make it fit
with G# loc b4..becuase all they learned were A melodic min...
Then NOTATE their perception of what that is on a music score...
Or some songs will BARROW chord from it's PARALELL MAJOR or min..
I try to explain it C MAJOR and A min...at first...
Becuase when you transfer that to other PARENT KEYs...
95% of people FU$KS that shiet all up due to LACK of MUSIC COMPREHENSION...get the # or b symbol screwed up....
becuase they percieve to ONLY SCALEs or movements they know...
Most common are wanna be music teacher..that only Knows
the MAJOR scale in 12 different PITCH...saying you're playing
the WRONG notes......
Site reading or reading music scores DOSE NOT = MUSIC COMPREHENSION
You dont need to read music to comprehend music..
If you COMPREHEND MUSIC...you know 1/2 of the SHIET that's on music
scores are FU$KED UP.lmao
The guitar is NOT the PIANO...
You can make different chord ( same note) at different places of the neck.
You can also use OPEN strings to DRONE
( which will create a complicate chord name on PAPER...for what is SIMPLE
to PLAY)
example....in C MAJOR/Amin....( using only notes in this scale too..to keep it
SIMPLE....( it'llbe complicated as Fu4k on PAPER)
Im going to play the C MAJOR Barr chord at the 8th fret...
Let the Open B and E string ring OPEN...it's C Maj7 on paper.
Then you're going have to write the notes in SEQUENCE to the VARIOUS
pICKING patterns...I might play over that chord shape....
Then Im simply going to shift a couple of fingers to play the F maj diad
but it'll be....F, 3, 7, ....agiasnt the open B and E string....( easy as Fu4k to play)
On PAPAR...the 5th is OMMITED...F maj7 add #11..
Then im simply going to SLIDE down 2 frets....
Play E, 4, b6...against the open B and E....( E sus 4, b6)
Then simply slide down 2 frets...play the D min diad D, b3, b7..against the open
B and E......D min7 add 9/13 ( the 5th is Ommited)
Then simply slide down to play the C Maj diad....C, 3, 8, 7 5 ( C maj7)
Then simply slide down to play the B and F note....while my picky is on the C note.
B, b5, b9 8 , 11.....those are the NOTEs they are what they are B sus 11, b5 add b9..
It's EASY as FU$K to play...into the open A min chord...
This shiet right here is going to Fu$k up alot of people UP...if they havnt learn
other scales or lessons....such as applying the N6 after the min and MAJOR's
tonic....and the Ab Lydian #2, #6.....When transfer to other KEYS...
If if I use SIMPLE CHORDS or fingering...
I NEED to PUT SIDE Notes....explaining WTF I used on the music scores...
