  • A close-up look and the history and operation of what's considered by many to be the smoothest and most attractive lever gun of all time, the 1886 lever action. This gun is Browning's beautiful and high quality remake of the famous Winchester 1886, in .45-70.

I have the 1986 "Montana-Centennial" white metal model, what a beautiful rifle. My Dad bought this in Montana (we're in SC) in 1986 during a 50-mule pack hunting trip, but I was the first to fire it 3 years ago.
I installed a Skinner-Merit adjust-aperture rear sight (and 3/4" front blade sight to match) and I get 1" MOA at 50 yds, 1.5" at 100. Super gator gun, and dangerous predator rifle. The crescent butt was V-E-R-Y painful, so put on a Shooter's Friend Recoil Pad to fix that. Awesome firepower and a blast to shoot.

I've got the Browning Model 71, which is the Browning-marked Winchester Model 71, which was nothing less than a Winchester reissue of the original Winchester Model 1886, but in a new caliber offering for the time, i.e., the .348 Winchester. Mine's an amazingly accurate rifle for its type.

I had one of these in 1989. I handloaded 350 grain Hornady bullets to about 1800 fps and took a 400 pound black bear in Minnesota with one shot! It was a great rifle but I constantly regretted the fact that it was not made by Winchester in America so I sold it. Great memories of a great time in my life, a young man with a 45-70 lever action hunting in the northwoods.

Worked for Browning U.K. in the eighties and I'm sure I saw one of these engraved with three types of gold, white, red, and yellow. I think it was part of a anniversary run. Handled an Auto 5 engraved with duck hunting scenes in these 3 types of precious metals. They are out there, somewhere.

+Tyler Tranni Yep, it doesn't get any better than the 1886 and the 1892 Winchesters, which are essentially the same rifles, with the difference being size and chambering. Love them both!

The History you go into is one of my favorite things of watching your videos on these types of firearms. I really enjoy history and if you ever get a hankering to do a historical video at one of the Tennessee battlefields from the War between the States I would love to see it. With your enfield rifled musket etc. Anyway, thanks for the history lesson and the shooting. Now I have another gun I am going to aspire to.

I always wanted an 1886 Winchester and after watching your video a few years ago for the first time it made me think of trying to get one again. Luckily I was able to pick up a Winchester/Miroku .45-70 Model 1886 Short Rifle a couple years ago when Winchester did a limited production of it's “historical rifle” models, it is a great rifle.

Nice gun Hickok, you seem to always have another beauty to pull out. I love Browning firearms. I swear they are all that smooth. I paid the extra money a couple years ago for a Browning BPS 12ga NWTF edition shotgun and the same thing... it was as slick as butter on a doorknob. I can hold the barrel up, push the release and the slide will cycle itself. Great machine work on the Brownings. Nice video!!

Had to come back and watch this great video again, Hickok. Your history presentation on the Winchester repeater was worth the watch again. I'm shooting an original Winchester 1886 (manufactured in 1896) chambered in 40-82. Great gun...and yes, like you said, it was very pricey! Winchesters in relatively good condition are going for several thousand dollars.

hey hickok45! great vid, i love the history of the guns, i have a question, here in michigan, we cant use rifles in the lower half of the state, only shotgun during deer season, can you recommend a good slug gun? i have an h&r "pardner" single action in three inch magnum, and i think the barrel must be warped or somethng, ive tried everything, but every shot comes out like three feet low and to the left, any suggestions?

That rifle is a real piece of art. They go for 4x what you paid for it back in the 80's. That's what I call an investment. When it comes to John Browning a lot of people don't know that he started his first gun before he was a teenager, that would be the rolling block that Winchester bought. The first one was a 22 for rabbit hunting.

For your information, PMC ammunition makes the large bore ammo for the old 1886 rifles.
Just not the .45-70, but all the other calibers that Winchester had.

First off, I enjoy your videos and I wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge of classic firearms with us! Secondly, I wanted to ask your opinion. I'm intersted in a 45-70 lever-gun and I'm having a difficult time deciding. I keep returning to Winchester's "new" model 1886, but I wasn't sure about the quality of Miroku's craftsmanship. As a man who has obvious field experience with many lever-actions, what's your opinion? Other obvious contenders are the Marlins. Thanks Hickok!
