  • John de Borman takes us through his method of composition and framing in films. Deconstructing the meaning behind the characters, scene or location and how to portray these elements in a concise and methodical way. We use examples from 'An Education', 'Made in Dagenham', 'If I stay', 'Quartet' and 'The Full Monty'.

Create scenes that imply more than that’s on the screen. Amazing words.

CookeOpticsTV should have millions of subscribers. This video on composition and framing is among many I've seen on this channel that impart valuable information and inspiration for film makers like myself. May your sub count continue to grow and may you prosper in its wake.

Robert Altman used that technique of superimposing a subject's gaze through reflection in a window many times. There is one instance I'm thinking of from The Long Goodbye (a wonderful film) where he also used a reflection off a car window. And what makes this special is not the reflection. It's the gaze of the actor through the reflection and how that actor reacts to the scene presented. It's entirely nonverbal. Not about what's said (what line is uttered) but how a face expresses the character's interpretation of what's gazed upon. Because you - the viewer - should distrust what characters say. But you'll always trust their expressions, their eyes and mouths and gait and other nonverbal cues. Pure visual storytelling. Goddard did this too, which I think it was really a French New Wave thing that popularized it among American filmmakers in the 70s.

I agree that films are too busy these days, it seems like they are made for audiences with attention deficit and there seems less trust in the medium.

Had to bring them up a stop or two or you’d lose detail. Lol, no he didn’t say that, probably wasn’t thinking about that, but it’s true, lighting of varied skin tones is different-and this can come as a shock for those who think pale pink is the normal.
