He actually mocked his culture as well trying to sing an opera aria with a style of singing which shares nothing in common with opera. I have also heard much better throat singing.
As someone who studies Tuvan style throat singing, it's arguably one of the most difficult singing styles a human can emulate. Literally making your voice create two notes at once is very, very difficult and takes years to even barely do properly. In my country, Korea, we have a native art called pansori, which is a type of "musical storytelling" in conjunction with a drum and body movements. It is very similar with throat singing and the use of instruments like the morin khurr, which together create a story and art form.
Wow, absolutely incredible. He completely nailed it. Transitioning from Tuvan throat singing to westernized music is hard enough, but he is actually good at it, with both tones. Shame really that the judges don't seem to be cultured enough to realize this.
Sure it sounds great when it’s played with tribal drumming. Such as in this music.apple.com/au/album/this-is-what-we-live-for/567084086?i=567084352 but alongside with this orchestra it sounds crap

Dw Simon was out there representing despite the clown judges, I'm not Mongolian, what he was doing though was called Khöömei throat singing, my culture is closer to the Sámi of Scandinavia. My people call it the Skjáld (Pronounced Skyalda), Sámi call it the Joik (Pronounced Yoik), Inuit call it Katajjaq, Africans call it Eefing, Japanese call it Rekuhkara & Buddhists call them chants & use it spiritually for meditation & relaxation. Skjálda, I have to say, is probably the easier of them to sing because most of our people lost the vocal shape to make such vibrations as this guy in the vid was doing. Joiking is a bit more difficult in my experience. Katajjaq is beautiful because it's all about love & harmony. Good artists include the Hu (used in Star Wars) & Shina Novaya (Shortened to Shina Nova usually)
I'm from Romania and I'm currently learning how to throat sing. The fact that these imbeciles simply laughed at him and refused to even give a damn explanation about why he got the buzzes it's really shocking. As a person who can actually sing a somewhat decent throat singing, i can tell that this guy is extremely good at it, its hard enough to just create tones but to perfectly sound a classical piece is something you have to practice for years upon years to achieve. In the end though I do feel like had the guy given them a proper introduction to what he was gonna do the reactions might have been different, but i guess he wanted the shock value. Sadly he did not get his Khusugtun moment.

I think Simon was the only one who realised that it was a cultural thing. tbf i think that mongolian throat singing sounds terrible with european songs. sounds great with traditional mongolian songs. but the three judges just took a big shit on it because they thought it some dude being weird.
The judges' reaction is incredibly rude, while the audience displayed utter ignorance. To be fair, however, it is a culture shock, since most Westerners have never been exposed to Tuvan throat signing and would experience it as something very foreign, very different from conventional pop music. Hence, the complete surprise and ultimate rejection. Perhaps a bit of an introduction might have helped his case, instead of talking about Andrea Bocelli and plunging the audience head-first into a phenomenon that they most likely have never encountered before.
It would have been a bit different reaction with a song that's native to tuvan throat singing instead of this. Bad choice and no native folk instruments.

2 words for the judges: culturally insensitive! I usually think Simon Cowell is too rude (and on rare occasions I like him for being a Savage who doesn't take shit from anyone), but props to him for letting him try!
I'm really mad at the judges for disrespecting the traditional Mongolian art of Throat Singing, especially the Sygyt style that Bat-Erdene Nyamdavaa used while performing. Of course, I'm surprised that Simon Cowell, of all the people, appreciated it and said "yes."
The judges really didnot understand that was a throat singing. It's a different level of vocal. You find this kind of people one in millions. If you are searching for unique & talent, you need to change your mindset. Oh, bdw, he was not joking. You should have not made fun of him.
I second that. I was rather disappointed that he chose a European orchestral piece instead of a traditional Mongolian song. First impressions and all that jazz: The use of a traditional melody would have made a fitting 'portfoil' of his abilities.
