Thank you very much for watching. Ocean going tugs rarely have flanking rudders, and we don't have them. I have a number of shipyard/drydock videos where you should be able to see what you are looking for. @@TimBatSea If you set up a decent trolling rig you could probably catch something for dinner most days. I would use a lure with a single big hook and fairly heavy tackle, and probably 50 lb test with 200 lb leader. A trolling spoon would be perfect for low maintenance, just drag it at almost any speed and they catch fish. Or offshore you could drag a lure with a hard plastic head and soft skirt. I had a Mylar skirt on one that we called El Matador, The Killer, when I lived in Costa Rica and fished a lot. It really was a killer. Mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna ate it all the time. I have a question, when towing a barge in big waves like that, does the cable stretch a lot? Or do you feel it pulling back on the tug in the swells/waves?
Thank you for watching. That is exactly what we are trying to keep from happening. Usually, when at sea, we can dump a bunch of wire and the weight of the wire acts as a shock absorber. But we can't do that in shallow water so we have to reduce speed and manage the strain on the wire. CUOTO

If the weather was more severe would it change how the barge is towed. For example, would you tie it along side instead of towing it or would more severe weather only keep you from proceeding to your destination. Captain forgive me for not remembering the terminology from your previous videos.
Thank you for watching. Great questions and if everyone knew everything, no one would watch my silly videos. 😂 Yes. If the WX (weather) was any worse, we probably wouldn't have gone in. The next option would have been to use an assist tug sliwing the barge down in the stern of the barge whike we towed harder on it. That would straighten it out, but might not be an option if the swell was too much. CUOTO
Would have thought you'd have snubbed her up a little more. Getting into harbours when the weather is bad can be tough. The water is boiling out at the mouth. Where I live in a harbour it can get nasty off the points. It's not big seas as we're off of a large straight. It can be 6-8 foot seas. It can blow 40 plus knots gusts up to 50-60.
Thank you very much for watching. Yes, I too would have liked to be a bit more shortened up, but it wasn't possible without really stressing the wire. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Harry. It is a heavily traveled area by many inexperienced boaters. But statistically has the same amount of incidents as the rest of the gulf and east coasts. CUOTO
Steamed through it many times on USN ships. Often has really bad weather due to the Gulf Stream diverging out into the Atlantic. Other than that, just another chunk of ocean.
Thank you for watching. We might be known to have a few onboard, but we certainly wouldn't be able to use them coming into a channel or in conditions with a wet deck. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Very nice... the Cibao is gorgeous. I spend most of my annual visit time around the Puerto Plata area but there is so much to see in the DR.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. But it's an ocean going tugboat, not a push boat. But we do have push gear and we can tow on the wire, alongside or in push gear. CUOTO
Tim, Have you heard with climate change, the Great Lakes are not freezing up like they used to? I would guess that the Lakers will start to work the whole winter thru instead of docking until ice out in spring as they used to. !
Great video Captain, I have a question. Is towing by the wire more efficient when out in the open, and the notch is used for more control when coming into port? I guess I am only used to seeing tugs in the notch because I’m not offshore a lot. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. Yes. You are correct. We would love to push all the time. After all, it allows us to stop. But the push gear can't take much more than a few feet of swell. CUOTO
Sorry, but my attention span is short. I only made it 20 seconds after seeing the title. That really sucks that yours is the last boat to be allowed in Tampa. @@TimBatSea I'll stick to sailing! A few years ago - around the 2:20 mark you can get a sense of the waves. Long Island Sound late fall. Rode out 3 days on anchor when the wind system clocked to the NE and it time to go home.

I have to ask, Bouchard or Moran by any chance in NY?
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. We have only one rule here; we try very hard to not "directly" name tugs, companies or customers as it gets me in trouble with my employer. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea thank you
And my apologies I did not know. I was just asking because my dad worked for them towing oil.
Yep. lived all over the DR...(diving) Running sportfishboats.. and they Can Get Loud and obnoxious with their suck as music...(lol)... I have pulled a Big Carver off the inside of Eggmont in one of those freaky offshore winds and seat state in Tampa Bay... (TowBoat US) I almost threw myself overboard trying to get a big float and line down to him.. Finally Got him off the beach and under his own power... (sucker stiffed me w/ a bad CC and my old Boss never followed up on it).. lol.. Stufff.. Good to see you doing your thing Tim... I could go to PR again.. Dunno what you would expect in NC but short tows... Wrong time of the year though... Take off a couple of months and go baha camping down in Mexico..
There's an idea! Thank you for watching Sam!
CUOTO
Maybe this is a dumb question but is there anyone manning the barge? If not is there ever a situation where someone would?
Thank you for watching. Not a dumb question at all. We only run "manned" barges. So there is always a crew on the barge. (2 or 3 people).
CUOTO
Wait a minute! You are driving a tug boat pushing a barge all over the world? This looks like more fun than flying.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Elvis. CUOTO
Have you ever had a cable fail and snap ???
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Ben. I have been fortunate to have not experienced that, but it does happen. CUOTO
What's your thoughts on the Bermuda triangle?
Thank you for watching Harry. It is a heavily traveled area by many inexperienced boaters. But statistically has the same amount of incidents as the rest of the gulf and east coasts. CUOTO
Steamed through it many times on USN ships. Often has really bad weather due to the Gulf Stream diverging out into the Atlantic. Other than that, just another chunk of ocean.
If the waves were showing up on camera they must’ve been “yuge!!” as ole Bernie used to say… #CUOTO
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for supporting the channel from the beginning! CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!
Is it bad when the donut comes out from under the wire like that?
CUOTO
Thank you for supporting the channels Mellissa. It's can be. It really depends on how long the wire is chafing on the Texas bar. CUOTO
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎✌
Thank you for watching Mr Bill! CUOTO
Do you ever bring a fishing pole with you?
Thank you for watching. We might be known to have a few onboard, but we certainly wouldn't be able to use them coming into a channel or in conditions with a wet deck. CUOTO
No way ? Tampa FL???
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Just the last ship in before the storm into Tampa. CUOTO
Remember, if you ground yourself on MacDill Air Force Base, you have gone too far.
😂😂😂😂 Wouldn't want that to happen. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Hey Tim, nice video! Where were you in the DR? And your observations are accurate.... Dominicans are real experts at making noise lol!
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. I was in Moca outside in Santiago. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Very nice... the Cibao is gorgeous. I spend most of my annual visit time around the Puerto Plata area but there is so much to see in the DR.
Actually, the engine hum overpowered any other noise. And the engine is music to my ears!
Thank you for watching Scott. CUOTO
That's a push boat, not a tug!
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. But it's an ocean going tugboat, not a push boat. But we do have push gear and we can tow on the wire, alongside or in push gear. CUOTO
Tim,
Have you heard with climate change, the Great Lakes
are not freezing up like they used to? I would guess
that the Lakers will start to work the whole winter thru
instead of docking until ice out in spring as they used to.
!
Thank you for watching. I really can't comment on any Great Lakes related as I have no experience there. CUOTO
Not exactly true
Great video Captain, I have a question. Is towing by the wire more efficient when out in the open, and the notch is used for more control when coming into port? I guess I am only used to seeing tugs in the notch because I’m not offshore a lot. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. Yes. You are correct. We would love to push all the time. After all, it allows us to stop. But the push gear can't take much more than a few feet of swell. CUOTO
Sorry, but my attention span is short. I only made it 20 seconds after seeing the title. That really sucks that yours is the last boat to be allowed in Tampa. I would have loved to have sailed in there one day, but oh well there’s always other ports. Hopefully I’ll be the last boat into one of them one day.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel James. After writing all of that, I'm sure you have a much longer attention span and know that we were the last boat the pilots allowed into tampa before the Storm. CUOTO
So are you the last ship allowed into Tampa? Why? Or are you near the DR. Confusing.
Thank you for watching Terry. We were the last boat in to Tampa before the storm hit. Im on my off time today in the DR, but will be in NYC tomorrow for 2 weeks working over. CUOTO
👍😎👍⚓️
Thank you for watching Chris. CUOTO
