I'm Scottish and this song is what I imagine American cheerleaders dance to at school basketball games or the cheerleaders competitions like the Kirsten Dunst film Bring it on.
They do. ugh! the local high school athletic field is across the street from me. Not a fan.

I was in the car with my dad just a couple of days ago and “It’s My Life” came on the radio and I said, “Hey! This is Gwen Stefani’s song!” and my dad was just like, “nope.”!🤣

The story, as I recall, is that her brother in the band had to talk her into taking the lead vocals in No Doubt, because he needed a female lead, and she was simply around. So it is remarkable how far she ran with it to spectacular stardom.

I liked her solo stuff but she made much, much better music when she was with No Doubt.
Gwen said this solo album was a throwback to her youth and the vibe she got from the music and times in high school. Being near her age, I agree and respect Gwen for branching out, this album has a very nostalgic sound to me.

I was a massive No Doubt fan and was really mad about Gwen going solo. I can’t deny that this song and many others by her are great and catchy, like you said. Check out Used to Love You and Make Me Like You!
Can I genuinely ask why were you mad about her going solo? I watched some videos from the Rock Steady era and if I recall correctly, the band said they took the break bc Adrian was going to become a father and some of them were recently married or getting married soon and the guys wanted to commit full time to their families/partners for a while and no one really knew how long would it last. Gwen decided to do a "side-project" ( that's what she has always called it) aka her solo music, but Irvin Iovine bascially had to convince her to make everything bigger than what she wanted. At the end it's like she got dragged into doing it and everything was more an accident that she didn't expect to work out the way it did. I wasn't even born when Tragic Kingdom was released, so I'm really curious about a lot of things, like why some people seem to direct their dissapointment only towards Gwen when it seems the four of them are equally responsible for their hiauts (and it's not like they were mad at her, since Tony wroked on LAMB too). I want to be neutral about this, and up until the current year I did it, but some months ago she said on a podcast that the guys made her feel guilty about getting pregnant bc due to that they had to postpone the hiatus, and that made me feel really bad for her bc it seems most people really overlook everything she has gone through.
Jay, you gotta react to “spiderwebs” or “Just a girl” by no doubt, i’d say Gwen was way better when she was in ND.

Oh my God, I love this song so much for the chicken out back in the day I was like yes this is the shit!! I grew up listening to Gwen Stefani and 53 years old so she’s from my time and always been a huge no doubt fan Gwen Stefani fan and my daughter she’s 14 is a cheerleader in high school so she loves this video.
I remember the same year this song came out I was in 2nd grade and we had a spelling test. One of the words was Bananas. When I tell you all of us started B-A-N-A-N-A-S.. we got in so much trouble 😂😂😂

BUT Gwen did choose to use cheerleader imagery in her video so she clearly doesnt have that much of a problem with cheerleaders in general.

I don’t know if anyone’s requested this one yet, but “Spiderweb” from when she was with No Doubt is an awesome song, hope u get around to it eventually 🥰💕 BTW, still hoping u eventually get to the song “Voices That Care”, I also requested it in your “We Are The World” reaction, and u asked if there were others songs like that, sung by multiple artists, and this was a big one, it was made in the 90s for the troops when we we were going through the first Gulf War, and many famous people got together and made a song for our troops fighting oversees, it has the likes of Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Peter Cetera, some of the guys from New Edition like Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant, Luther Vandross, Garth Brooks, the Pointer Sisters, who were also in We Are The World btw, Kenny G, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Little Richard, Will Smith when he was the Fresh Prince, and also a ton of actors participated as well, not just musicians and singers, there are a lot of famous faces here if u look close, Billy Crystal was there, and Chevy Chase, Kevin Costner, Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Dawson, Cindy Crawford, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and I could go on and on, but there are just too many, but if u watch it u will see tons of familiar famous faces of the time from music, film and even sports, it was such an incredibly epic song, video and collaboration and it was so big and meaningful at the time, I can’t believe there are literally no reactions to it on TH-cam, most reactors miss this iconic song and video, I do hope u get to it eventually, especially since there aren’t too many videos or songs of this kind, literally besides these two there is only one other one that I know of and that’s the one where British, Irish and other Icons got together to form Band Aid and sung a Christmas song called “Do They Know Its Christmas”, these are the only three songs I know that are like that, I do hope that you do “Voices That Care” first though, as it is so underrated amongst reactors, I couldn’t find one reactor that has done it 😢 I think a lot of people forgot about this song…..🥺
